Kim Un-yong told them he took 100 million won from Doosan Group Chairman Park Yong-sung, who is president of the International Judo Federation, and 700 million won from his then-fellow IOC member Lee Kun-hee, chairman of Samsung Group, the prosecutors said. The country's most influential sports figure said he issued receipts for the money, which was used to finance his campaign for the IOC presidency in July 2001. Kim lost the election to Jacques Rogge by a large margin. He also collected less than $1 million from about 20 college alumni and other friends and about another $1 million from sports figures overseas in campaign donations, Kim's aide said. Prosecutors said it was perfectly legal for Kim, a lawmaker with the Millennium Democratic Party, to take the donations, which had nothing to do with its investigation of corruption charges against him. They didn't elaborate on why the prosecution was releasing information about Kim's testimony last year when the donations were seen as legal or the relevance to other allegations against him. The prosecution is probing an allegation that Kim delivered $500,000 in cash, about half of which came from the Seoul government, to North Korea when he visited Pyongyang in June 2001 to promote inter-Korean sports exchanges. It is considering summoning Rep. Choi Jae-sung of the MDP for questioning. He accompanied Kim to the communist country at that time, prosecutors said. The prosecution is also looking into whether Kim delivered $400,000 and $200,000 separately when the two Koreas' sports teams appeared together at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics and Pyongyang sent an all-female cheering squad to the 2002 Busan Asian Games. Kim is facing allegations he stashed some of the billions of won donated by two domestic conglomerates for the World Taekwondo Federation, of which he is president. He is also suspected of receiving at least 130 million won in bribes in 2001 from a now-detained businessman in return for pulling strings to gain him membership on the Korea Olympic Committee. Kim served then as chairman of the committee. Prosecutors said they suspect Kim received 400 million won in bribes from another businessman, Kim Hyun-woo, who became a KOC member in the same year in what they think was a similar deal. Kim found himself embroiled in other corruption charges as prosecutors have been checking to see whether more than $1 million in cash found in his personal safe was given to him in bribes. He is also under probe over allegations he asked his children to take about $1.5 million out of the country illegally. Regarding the bribery charges against him, Kim earlier acknowledged having received some money from the two former KOC members, but denied taking any bribes. saintsim@heraldm.com By Sim Sung-tae 2004.01.08 --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re:Guns To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 7 Jan 2004 18:13:23 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > >One wonders (out loud) why we hear of "gun violence" in the mainstream > >media yet nothing about fist violence or knife violence or ballbat violence > >or ?? .
