Hello Chris: I hear you about the time and drain on energy, family life, and the pocket book. That is the way it is for most, so I would not be too hasty to trade in your real job. From what I have seen, and I have looked hard in a lot of places, quality is not as important to the average student/parent as is service. I have seen some really (I mean 150.000 per month) successful schools with a modest program, but their service and people skills were second to none. Hence, I believe there is room for someone who teaches a good program AND make a buck, as long as their service and people skills are great. FWIW, 99 % of the folks using the marketing ideas of the big Dojang Gurus are just as poor as most of us. It seems that only those who have the skills I mentioned benefit from their great ideas. The otheres merely make these gurus moresuccessful:) Mind you, some of their ideas are great, and I certainly agree the networking they do is fruitful, but it still takes a special person to make it work. Whatever you decide, I wish you well. It is, or rather was near Shaolin village until the current abbot decided to return Songshan to its more spiritual nature. I learned a couple of Shaolin sets, which are illustrated in that book, and are very close. The pictures are line drawings but the nei gung section will help you a lot. Much of the books are very basic. Now here is the disclaimer, Shaolin means a lot of things. There are styles which are Shaolin because they evolved at Songshan, Fukien, or one of the other temples. There are styles which are Shaolin because they evolved from a style from one of the temples. There are styles called Shaolin because the founder studied at Shaolin but the style itself has little to do with Shaolin. Kung Fu, or more accurately Wu Shu (and not the sport), is a big area of study. This is an area which I have been studying, and so far my specialties are from shandong province (Shandong Black Tiger and Taijiquan). I have also been studying Hung Gar as my Tiger Sifu has asked, and it is a Shaolin style coming from, or originating in some form at Fukien. I don't know if this helped you, but please feel free to email me if I can help you further. First link: while there are a number of hugely non-logical arguments presented on that page, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, when someone quotes Kellermann's study---a comment needs to be made. Any simple search on the internet can show that Kellermann's study was not only incredibly badly done, but erroneously reported. This page attempts to say that "it has been discredited only the by the gun lobby" which is not only far from the truth, but laughable. It attempts to say that because it was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, it was peer-reviewed and true---and yet, it is far from it. In general, a simple way to tell if someone has done their research about the gun control debate has to do with whether or not they quote Kellermann in a positive way---if they do, then they haven't done any research. For comments by a doctor about gun control in the medical literature, take a look at: http://www.rkba.org/research/suter/med-lit.html Secondly---the ACLU page. I have very little to say about this page, other than the fact that I find it interesting that many of the prominent constitutional scholars in the US (not only about the 2nd amendment, but prominent with regards to all of it) agree that the 2nd amendment is about individual rights---and yet, the ACLU, which upholds the rights of "the people" everywhere else in the Bill of Rights, thinks that "the people" in the second amendment means "the government in the form of the National Guard." Odd, that. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir: Thank you so much for answering Mr. Feldstein so aptly. I wanted to,but experienced discomfiture so great that I was almost incoherent for a day. The left never seems to understand that the only way to deter extreme violence is with at least, the threat of an equal and opposite reaction called defense. Mr. Feldstein proudly proclaims ignorance of the second amendment yet has the gall to express an opinion of the same, I frankly do not understand this sort of non-sensical behavior. If I were to express an opinion of anything without some sort of legit research, I would be expressing "feelings", not opinion. I am sure that Mason, Jefferson, and others would be apalled at the damage that has been wrought to both the document and the way of government that many term as "inspired". Many express the belief that the constitution is "obsolete" in any aspect that provides for the self defense of a citizen, yet look around, the potential for exteme violence is even greater now than then with our new leftist created parentless, misguided, scruple-less society. I may abhor violence, I do however abhor acts of violence and depradation against my self or family or country even more, therefor I recognise the values inherent within the system. The fact that in the US there are around two million incidents of guns successfully used in self-defense year in and year out is easily borne out by independent reproducible studies. The fact is the number of actual, real children (and not nineteen year old gangbangers) killed in gun accidents every year is much, much lower than pro-gun control organizations claim - these fallacious reports are then unthinkingly picked up by mainstream news organizations with their own anti-gun bias to support (as proven by the preponderance of pro-gun control editorials in all the major liberal newspapers - if you really don't think network news shows are against guns then there isn't much hope for you). Hey, go ahead and support the government's right to take legal guns away from law-abiding citizens if you like, but don't lie and say evidence which undercuts your case is "opinion." It is a simple comercial grade carpet that is low pile and comfortable to the touch. The secret is the padding under the carpet... it is a residential pad called Luxury Step. It resists moisture and should not decenigrate like regular carpet padding. We steam cleaned the carpet here at BMAC after our one year and the water was not dirty :) Which tells me our padding is doing it's job not only for the comfort but also the cleanliness! I am not a huge fan of puzzle mats simple as they are hard to keep clean and fungus free. But as this will be personal use in your home this may not be an issue until you are thinking of selling. Hope this helps. Kat --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Donnelly, Eamonn" To: "'the_dojang@martialartsresource.net'" Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2004 14:31:12 -0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] Violence is violence. Real bias in action. Violence is violence. Guns cannot be violent. End snip Ray you know the answer, Fist violence or knife violence or ballbat violence are so common place these days they do not constitute news. Guns are used to commit gross acts of violence, Guns are used in self defence to protect against acts of violence, c'est la vie. Because someone wearing a black piece of cloth around their middle told them so. My experience is that those outside the martial arts have a somewhat glorified view of "black belts". They are elevated to a status usually not deserved and their words are often taken as gospel with no questioning. The sad part is that some of our fellow black belts let this perception go to their heads and use it to bilk the public. have a groovy day, dave weller --__--__-- Message: 10 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: Mike_Devich@selinc.com Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2004 09:49:03 -0800 Subject: [The_Dojang] IOC V.P.
