Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have a question: What is with the isolationism in KMA? There are many teachers, organizations, etc, that tell the members/students, not to study at other dojang or visit other teachers, etc. This was true 30 years ago and it is still sadly true today. I have always told my students that if they find a better dojang than ours, tell me about it, I also want to go. I also have students that cross train at other schools (usually what they were studying before they found hapkido). Good for them. They are adults and I am going to treat them as adults. I once knew a well respected Korean national who told his student that when she went to college next month, she could not study with another teacher (she quit that night and I married her two years later). I have taught workshops at someone's dojang and then had the head of that organization tell me that it was not proper, I told him to get a life and that he had a serious ego problem. The stories go on forever. But I just do not get it. We are after all, in this together and should help each other out. Anyone who has been to one of my classes in Jackson, other workshops, my dojang, etc., will tell you to look for the guy with a big grin (not Bruce, the other happy camper). That is because I have a blast throwing someone around. I am not going to let someone with a ego out of control tell me what to do, life is just to short. I enjoy picking on Ray because Master Ji has a reputation of promoting due to ones occupation, but I am just having a little fun. I have never told someone what they can or can't do. I am certainly not going to let someone else, who is not my teacher (or my wife), tell me that I should not have done this or that... Thoughts? Jere R. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Honestly, I do not remember why I started in June of 1974. But I was interviewed last year for a local Cincinnati magazine and I was asked; why I never quit, when most people leave an activity after a few years, especially a high demanding one. My only response was, "I never thought about it till now, but it is what I do". I could never imagine not teaching hapkido. Besides I would be bored and ending up watching horrible prime time TV. :) Jere R. Judo just looked a bit dull, no flying kicks in there. When a saw a brochure about a hapkido demonstration class that would be given, hapkido sounded much more exotic. I decided to join this introduction right away, and I never quit. On a side note: I'm living in Korea now. For about a year I'll stay with my teacher and study hapkido even more. To make some extra money, I opened a simple webshop: http://www.hankido.org/ -- mvg. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hey Folks! Thanks for the answers! I guess since ya'll answered me, I'll return the favor. I do that medieval re-enactment stuff, and at one point found the lack of western martial tradition pretty frustrating, so I started asian martial arts as a way to get SOME martial culture. I started with tae kwon do and kajukenbo. Later on, I went to study other things, notably Kung fu, Matsubayashi ryu karate and Judo. The reason I stuck with it though, is that I beleive it gives me the strength to be kind and giving, the patience forgive and see the long term, and the flexibility to adapt to new problems and situations. In short, it has helped me learn how to help others. Just my two hippie-esque cents! Later Peter Join the Fight against violence! Why not take up martial arts? After my first big power break, 4 Patio blocks with a Downward Punch and breaking a Knuckle, I couldn't wait to do it again. Just to do it. Its like drugs to me. I get an adrenaline rush every time I break and cant wait to do it the next time. Its not just a pastime anymore, its a way of life. Why didn't I take up Martial Arts a lot earlier in life?! _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list, 1600 members The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2004: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang **************************************************************************** SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES Go to London Fire at www.london-fire.gov.uk/firesafety This email is confidential to the addressee only. A friend of mine asked me to come to a class. I figured what the heck. I try it. If I like it I'll keep doing it. Well 14 years later I'm still doing it. The number 1 reason that I'm still doing it??? FUN!!! So for my 40th birthday I gave TKD to myself as a present. In fact it has been 5 years since, this week that I started! My first class still is in my mind as if it were yesterday! I went in not knowing what to expect but ready to follow a program. Well my flexibility was not since I never stretched and boy my attempts at basic form were really awkward, and the kicking and punching, whoa. I was so hooked! My instructor never told me I couldnt, and when I said I couldnt, I did. He was truly wounderful. My reasons for doing this art now? Everything I have learned at not only a physical level, but also spiritual level. And now, my students also. I guess the best reason? THE LEARNING NEVER STOPS! If one continues to pratice, one will continue to grow... and as this happens, martial arts becomes a way of thinking and living. By teaching, my students help me grow as I help them on their journey. Will I be doing this at 70? 80? Heck, yes!!! As long as I can move..... breathe...... Onward!!!!! sandy :) --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Kip McCormick" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] World KIDO Federation & the Han Min Jok Hapkido Association Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2004 17:38:34 -0800 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reference NEOFIGHT Every three months or so Master Seo puts together the Neofight, a Korean version of Ultimate Fighting Championships. I've been to the past two and they were fun to watch and cheap seats are under $10 US -- even the nosebleed seats are good seats. I took many of the students from my school as well as several family members to watch and everyone had a blast. You get martial artists from a wide spectrum throwing down. For those of y'all in Seoul -- if you go to the Neofight get there about 20 minutes AFTER the start time so you won't go numb listening to all the pre-fight speeches! I imagine the next one will be in late winter/early spring. It's a quick subway ride. If you're traveling through Seoul and there's a NEOFIGHT event, it's worth your while to go.
