Your student is more than welcome to come and join our class. Depending on where in Memphis she moves, she might not want to drive that far. It can take an hour or more just to drive across Memphis. Here is the link to our school's contact web page: http://www.geocities.com/denatkd/address.html If she comes to Jackson with you, look for me, I plan on being there also. Look for two very short women, I am bring a yellow belt friend with me. Hello Melinda: I used to get similar requests at least once or twice per month. If you want to get rid of it, just tell them that you can in no way arrange for Visas. It seems these folks just want to find a way to get sponsored into the US or Canada. Legit or not, who wants to bring anyone from these "sensitive areas" into the country these days:) Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2004 00:51:15 -0800 From: Edward To: The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Breaking out of Lurk mood Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello to one and all. My name is Edward Peters. I have been in lurk mode for some months now. I feel, in a strange way, that I "know" many of you. I have a question for some of the instructor types here. I recently inherited a Hapkido class. My master got sick and had to cut way back on instruction. My most senior student instructor and his girlfriend (both higher rank than I) moved out of state. I am now the most senior HKD person at school. There is also new manangement at the school (mostly TKD). So all that is the ground work for my question. I have a student in my class who is...well.. to put it in Mr. Stovall's terms a "Milton" He is 26 or 27. He has been in class for almost three years. He has not changed in ability or aptitude in that time. He has some "issues" and has been diagnosed with ADD. I have tried everthing for the past year to get him to a point where he is deserving of his rank. Currently he is a blue belt and just a few tests away from a Dan rank. I think he was unfairly promoted to his current rank, without the ability to preform basic kicks, and other techniques. I am now faced with the question of testing. I told him, if he tested now, he would fail. He is not ready, and I have no way of making him ready for a test. I do not want to have him be, in any way, a reflection of Hapkido, or my instruction. I cannot have him teaching techniques to white belts. He seems to have no aptitude for Martial arts, except that, he is aware of his short commings and he still comes every week. He has heart and he wants to be better, but there is a wall of resistance I cannot break thru. I cannot punnish him if techniques are not done correctly, because he will alreay beat himself up worse than any number of push ups. If I try to praise him when he make little bits of progress, he doesn't believe me. Has anyone out there every had to deal with this before. Any advice would be greatly appriciated. I go by Edward EP3 or Kyosahnim. P.S. one of my other most senior students and I are making plans currently to make the drive over to Jackson in March for GM West's great North American Hapkido fun fest. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2004 07:25:21 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: anyone? anyone? bueller? But that is at the local level and we live in the country. In 2000 at the Peace Festival in Bloomington with the Dali Lama, the entire front section was devoted to clergy of all faiths and it was full. So it does happen. Peter: Glad to hear your dojang gets along with others. That is the way it should be. Most on this group are that way also. In fact, I will be teaching a hapkido class at a taekwondo dojang tonight! He sounds like a child on a playground, petty and rude. I wish you the best of luck in dealing with the aftermath of his foolishness. I am an avid reader of this digest, and although I do not contribute often, I have the highest respect for the Hapkido masters and students who contribute here, your love and concern for Korean Martial Arts is both obvious and admirable. One question, when Mr. Hackworth insults Jidokwan, does he mean the taekwondo Jidokwan? That may sound like a stupid question, but I couldn't understand where that contempt would stem from. Perhaps I am wasting my time trying to understand someone who should be ignored. I have judged her students at AAU events and they are top shelf. k.cerami@worldnet.att.net Yours in jung do, Charles Richards www.mojakwan.com ============================================================ Hey out there... I believe so. I have not visited the KHF's BBS in some time due to the trash talking going on there. Both about the wannabe as well as by him. But I do know that he has spoken poorly of the Ji Do Kwan in the past. His claim was something along the lines of they were all crooks, gangsters and thieves. !?!?! I personally do not know of any problems with the Ji Do Kwan. Some of the JDK instructors were early innovators in sport TKD in Korea. Perhaps they were on to him long ago and he was upset about it.
