Hello Emil: Doing a fundraiser with your school is a great opportunity to teach your students civic responsibility and pride in helping others, and it can be a great opportunity to receive good publicity at the same time. With fundraising, your focus should be on getting as many dollars as possible for the cause you choose, and that means low overhead. No sense making a thousand dollars for a charity and have it dwindle down to a few hundred because it cost you too much to purchase boards (a non renewable resource as far as I am concerned). There is also much more chance of injury using boards. Doing a kickathon will eliminate the boards and overhead. That way you can save the dollars raised for the cause of your choice. Often the charity will assist you in planning your fundraiser and lend more credibility to your efforts. Make sure to contact the news media, so your efforts are publicized and people will know you are legit. Also make sure that you keep the safety of your students in mind. Not too many kicks in a row, have teams to switch between, and keep a keen eye on your team for signs of stress. This method of teaching gets the message across without making a student feel that they cannot do anything. On February 28th, my TKD school is having a "Shave for the Cure". I will be shaving my head to raise funds for cancer research. My husband and one of the TKD children are the only other ones who are crazy enough to join me. However, the rest of the school is enthusiastically supporting us by raising funds with pledge sheets. The Canadian Cancer Society has provided us with information on cancer and the pledge forms. I would recommend that the first step would be to decide which charity to support and then contact that charity. Often the charities have the framework in place for fund raising. Some of the fundraising I have experienced/seen are: silent auctions (with donations solicited from individuals and companies); car washes with the group volunteering their time and washing equipment; raffles/lotteries; etc. IMHO, any organization which reaches out beyond itself to the community always benefits from it in more than just free advertising.
