While part of the former US Tang Soo Do MDK, I also had a double promotion, 9th to 7th gup. This was a college "club", and we only tested twice a year! If it could happen to me, don't feel it is uncommon (although I attribute it to watching too much Kung Fu while growing up)! I believe you are seeing the results of the dedication and commitment both you and your wife are putting into your training. You not only train a lot at the dojang, but also at home. Very admirable, and is apparently being rewarded by your instructor. I don't think you need to worry about the McD, or about what others think. I am sure you will earn the respect that comes with each rank. That said, I believe there should be caution moving forward...It takes time to build the muscle memory required to perform techniques the "right" way. If the foundation is not solid, the rest of the "house" may not be as stable as it could be! Hey, how many Grandmasters have been known to say that practicing any technique, say a punch, 10,000 a day, every day for 10 years and at the end of that 10 years you will be only starting to understand how to do it right! (Massively paraphrased, but I think it gets the idea out). Also, a bond forms between those who train together. Rapid advancement, for any reason, tends to not give you the time to develop these bonds between others in class. The courtesy, respect, hard work, sweat, tears, etc. are all part of the training and the learning process. For me, to miss out on that would be to miss one of the dimensions of your training. Couple this with building the foundation of your art "too quickly" and I would be concerned moving forward. Personally, I would discuss the situation with your instructor, in private, prior to next testing. Let them know that you respect their evaluation of your abilities, and appreciate the rank that you've earned, but would like to slow down your advancement so that you can ensure you are learning and developing in the best manner possible. Just the fact that you don't seem comfortable with what has happened up to this point indicates that his may be enough of an "issue" that it could potentially interfere (emotionally) with your training. What about the material for the ranks that you've skipped??? I would imagine that you would need to learn twice as much when you've skipped a rank. Hope this viewpoint helps some. Good luck. In the spirit, Mark --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Stovall, Craig" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2004 08:42:32 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Query regarding advancement Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> First off, kudos on the dedication. Secondly, I'll just pass along the fact that I've seen "newbies" jump in head first and follow a schedule similar to your own. Sure enough...in about 12 to 18 months...burn out! Assuming your "4-5 times at 2-3 hours per shot" schedule...eight hours per week is probably more than most of the folks on this list, and 15 hours per week is a LOT (don't let anyone tell you differently). Eight hours per week is probably realistic and maintainable over the long haul. Fifteen hours...just beware. Slow and steady wins the race. Look into the concept of "periodization"...it's not just about managing sets and reps in a weightlifting routine. If you don't cycle your volume and intensity, TKD will turn from a "love affair" to a "fatal attraction". Trust me...seen it, been there, done it. Quality always...quantity sometimes. <<>> Don't sweat it. In my experience, it's somewhat common even among dojangs with very strict standards. It's usually accomplished by those that have risen "above and beyond". By the sounds of your dedication, you probably have. I double promoted once myself, and have seen numerous people at the very low colored belts skip a rank. It's not too rare for a yellow to go straight to a green (skip orange...depends on the belt system used). This is a FAR cry from the guy that started studying an art five years ago, and is now a 4th degree black belt. Or, the guys that go from 3rd dan to 6th dan overnight just because they joined an organization and brought in a boat load of students (and revenue). That's more of the shenanigans that gets criticized here. In TKD, if you are dedicated and bring some baseline athleticism to the table...it's not uncommon to tear right through the first belts (read: rapidly advance in the base curriculum). I've seen people who still couldn't do a proper front kick after MONTHS, and other people that had a front kick that would put some black belts to shame after a few weeks. If you fall closer to the latter category, don't be surprised if you've got a green belt after only 10 months. Expect things to slow down in the upper belts, as the curriculum becomes more difficult. Otherwise, enjoy the recognition of your hard work. This is a good way to exchange info and stay up to date in the martial arts community. So, for my first question, I would like to know if anyone has information on Ji Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do. Specifically, website from Korea, and contact info in Korea. I've done a lot of research on U.S. web site's, and have been fortuate enough to train with serveral Ji Do Kwan Instructors here. So what I'm looking for is more info on the Korean perspective on the Kwan. Thanks for your help. I'm a third degree and not receiving any instruction. I attend 2 to 3 classes a week and teach another and dont seem to be getting any direction (the C part). I realize that part of the problem is that one day a week the instructor of the class is a lower rank than I am, but I believe in his abilities. At least 2 times a week though I'm in class with senior belts and still dont get any constructive criticism. I guess what I'm asking is how many other black belts out there feel that they are not getting the correction, and what do you do about it? I would be concerned if you were not advancing. Now as you get to the advanced stages do not be too alarmed if your progression slows somewhat. Keep up the quality trainging and have fun. Ask. Approach the Senior Instructor and ask them if there is anything they can help you with and if there is direction for advancement/set curricula as with pre dan ranks. If they know that you want direction and want to progress this may help them to recognise your needs/desires. 2. Look outside your square. Have a look at the other seniors and other Dan holders in your club/organisation. Are they getting the direction you are seeking? If yes, ask yourself why and can you make changes so that direction comes your way also? If no, then is this the organisation that will meet your needs? Take some time and look at other stuff. A lot of Taekwon do schools do not cater to Dan ranks and the journey after Dan becomes a fairly personal one. This was my personal experience and apparently that of a number of members of this list. 3. Re focus. Look more closely at your Hapkido. Spend more time here while maintaining your Taekwon do. Focus your energies on the positive and usually this will affect other areas of your life. Hopefully your Taekwon do. IMHO. If any of the Instructors or other senior members on the list would like to make comment I, too, would be most grateful to hear your perspective. I hope this helps in some small way Ken.
