I guess you need a certificate a letter of appointment and at least three ki seminars in Ocoee and then you will be certified to see the emperor directly with the clothes? Dudes if you can't see the light of day by now your head must be stuck in your arse and that is why it's so dark and confusing.. No Naifanchi. However, there are a few Okinawan tapes which have various takes on Naifanchi advertised in Classical Fighting Arts. As far as the issue of eclecticism in Hapkido, I have no problem with people dragging that old chestnut out whenever it pleases them. My issue is one of degree; to wit: where does one stop? If contributions on the DOJANG DIGEST are any indication the concept of the Hapkido arts being eclectic seems to be a sword which is drawn very selectively to cut one way rather than another and always at the convenience of the speaker. How is it, for instance, that "eclecticism" rarely includes investigating the old polearms of Korean tradition? And why are the knife traditions almost non-existent? And what about the rope techniques which are nearly as hard to find as the knife material anymore. I think I could be forgiven for suspecting that eclecticism may merely be sloth and stinginess by other names as it appears that what people may really be saying is that they are too lazy or tight to invest time and money in learning genuine Korean material. Perhaps its a lot easier to simply fill-in their curriculums with more casual material or with whatever will retain students with an appeal to their novelty. But why stop at weapons, Ray? And if that "eclecticism sword" get drawn need we forget that it can cut just as sharply TWO ways? If we want to raise eclecticism and license to an art form why not take a visit to Florida and pull a couple of pages from that guys' notebook? Could he not make an arguement for being "eclectic" in as much as his sort of misrepresentation seems to have been only organizational policy by another venue? Finally, I remember that I was called to task on more than one occasion for merely rearranging Yon Mu Kwan material. At least I didn't incoporate material from another culture and pass it off as "Korean". Then again, maybe that might have been my mistake. Perhaps I am out of line expecting people to actually honor their arts as "Korean". Maybe anything goes as long as it serves someones purpose. Actually, thats OK with me. I just wish you might have let folks know that this Net only speaks to Korean MA within some vague and highly subjective range, yes? Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Gordon R. It is my understanding that it combines all Korean Martial Arts, but how does it compare to Hapkido, for example? Is it more geared toward self defense or competition? I would appreciate hearing any thoughts you may have on this art. Thanks. Gordon R. Hello Bruce: Believe it or not, the world WAS round when the early folks (without proper documentation) said it was flat:) IMHO, if people have had rice as a main staple of food for as long as Koreans have had it, I don't need documentation to know they must have had some form of tools to thresh their crop. I am equally sure that these same folks would NOT have set their tools aside when their villages were raided. Some things we just accept because there is enough "reason" to believe it.
