I object. This is nothing but ridiculous Portugese propaganda...!!! Everybody knows (or is supposed to know) that Floris V himself invented ancient ancestor of the sport we now know of as TGT nearby his castle (Muiderslot near the city which today is known as Amsterdam). Later the sport spread thru Europe together with the word of Martin Luther (he was nothing but he half-time act during the first Open Dutch TGT tournament). A little known fact is that Floris is my great-great-great......great grandfather. Which makes me the official Divine President Great Grandmaster of Dutch Hapkido. -- mvg. I was first introduced to this back in the mid 80's as the school district I attended based their varsity S&C program on BFS. The Dot Drill is especially useful in developing "quick feet"...a very valuable athletic quality, and one that has application in a wide range of athletic pursuit (including martial activity). The drill is also exceptional in developing coordination, balance, and spatial awareness (one of the movements involves a sudden 180 degree full-body turn). It's also a very good warm-up exercise. The drill is easy to do and set-up, but hard to describe. A web search will probably turn up something useful. This drill is also outlined in the BFS book that recently came out. I picked one up at Borders for $20. Have to say that at 30 years old and green belt ITF TKD it felt good, and provided a very visible sign of progress for me - was a real rush! Even better was my wife's twisting kick - both left and right leg she broke the board - then again she is "spaghetti joints"! I guess my next post will be after my grading (March 15th) - good luck to any other students taking grading soon Taekwon Neil Burton --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net All, It looks like that we are watching the first major split in the TGT-world. There appears to be two factions. Those grouped around JR West backing his claim that he learned the art a Korean monastery in the mountains where the monks claimed to have been passing down techniques developed a millennium ago in Tibet. The other faction claims that, and has some historical research to back their claims, that TGT is a modern corruption of an ancient Portuguese martial arts system developed from techniques taught to ancient traders by American Indians. The Dutch bought a supply of gophers and some manuals for a song and some tulips (which at that time were worth more than gold) and took the art to Asia. Will the TGT world ever be the same again and will the two factions ever talk to each other again? Boyd" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Communicating with Second Language Learners Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net After reading Bruce Sims "letter" a few days ago, I felt I should write something. The reason is because what Bruce wrote, while I am sure it was satisfying to him, and quite comprehensible to most of us, was - for the apparent level of the intended audience - very likely confusing, convoluted, condescending and in some places incomprehensible. As a tip for future written communication with second language learners, we should do our best to avoid colloquial or folk expressions, refrain from using bastardized terms from the reader's first language, refrain from using non-standard English spellings of terms from the reader's first language, and resist the urge to write long sentences like this one. There is no reason to expect a typical Korean student of English to fully understand a sentence like this: "It should come as no surprise to those with two clues to rub together, that it seems clear as day to us here that the so-called 'history' of Keum-do is a load of horse-apples, ne?" By way of comparison, Master Bae could choose to reply to Bruce's comments about Hackworth and promotions, etc. with the expression, "Everything in life is like an old man's horse." ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com Copyright 1994-2004: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
