Caveat Emptor, folks. Good(?) to see that our predictions have come true. It was suspected that Dickie would leave or be forced to leave the KHF and then attempt to tell the world that this new KHF was the "Real" KHF. We should probably look for something like this appearing in TKDT as a Florida Press Release in the near future... The bottom line is that since Dick Slackworth was unknown to the Koreans in this new KHF org he was able to snow them with his usual pile of BS. People are now informing the new org of the facts, the truth. Expect some updates in his area fairly soon. He can run, but he can't hide for very long... Seems more like an attempt to mislead folks into believing it is something that it is (apparently) not. Just call it by its name, but leave off the Hapkido. That would be more ethical, imho. Some might call it TSD plus more than a new "style" Nevertheless I am the Doju and Kwan Jang although the only tittle I or my students use is Sabom. I print and sign all kup certification and certify my Dans through my org which is the USKMAF under listmember JR West. FWIW, I looked a Dr. Jerry Beasley's AIKIA, and your system sounds similar to what Jim Sams (SaJiDo) has done here in Atlanta. I'd say if your cirriculum leans more towards Marc's martial arts you might attend their Karate College (June in Radford, VA) and talk with Dr. Beasley about how rank certification works through them. I can't speak for them, but if your cirriculum follows more of a Hapkido plus I would consider the USKMAF with GM West or NKMAA with GM Timmerman. Both are list members and I'm sure would be glad to explain off list, parameters for being a member club and parameters for certification of Korean Martial Arts Rank. I don't think eith would certify rank in a "non-korean martial arts" system, so if that's the case, I would again encourage you to look at AIKIA (Beasley, Wallace & Lewis) Yours in Jung Do, Charles Richards www.mojakwan.com ======================================================================= I teach a style / syllabus I developed myself, I do not claim to have re-invented the wheel I have simply collated ideas, techniques and principles over the 20+ years I have been training and teaching, it is a Hapkido Style I named Jung Shin Hapkido, I do not claim it to be anything other than the way I personally like to teach, I produce good standard students and instructors and all Dan grades are assessed by panels of invited independent examiners between 4th-10th Dan, from the organisations I affiliate to, even though they may hold grade in different styles such as TaeKwon Do and Aiki-JuJitsu they are still able to assess good techniques whilst I advise them on accuracy within the syllabus. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Dear Rudy, You are welcome. I have come across a bit more information. The PortugueseNational Museum in Lisbon (well worth a visit if you have a couple of weeks) holds all of Vasco Pyjama's journals and the navigational maps he prepared from his exploratory voyages. The latter are illustrated, as was the custom, with small drawings depicting life on board ship. One of these maps has drawings of sailors throwing surplus gophers overboard into the sea. A variety of throws are depicted that bear a remarkable resemblance to the throws in modern TGT (cf Master West's photo on the TGT website). To my knowledge this is the earliest document referring to TGT. And of course it confirms Vasco Pyjama as the true Founder of TGT. ( We will have to stop this nonsense, Rudy, I am running out of names for my references) With kind regards Barrie Restall --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Tue, 17 Feb 2004 14:40:18 -0500 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: Victor M Cushing Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Knife Defenses Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I am going to teach a short session at Master Todd Miller's Hapkido Friendship workout seminar on 28 FEB in Dover, NH (shameless plug, but since the event is free it should be allowed). Hello Klaas, you bring back some great memories. I visited the castle of Muiderslot many times, and I just love the painting of Floris V on his beautiful white horse. Some great ancient weapons and armor there too. Hello Andrew. I think we can all forget about the recent split, because I just received word that the pet Floridian Rat kept by the Orientals has just been given the boot. Now all "honest" TGT practitioners can get back to getting along and practicing their beloved art. Thank God, no more politics among true TGT practitioners around the world:) Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "michael tomlinson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 17 Feb 2004 20:23:08 +0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] Bigger,Stronger, Faster Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I agree with Craig on this one folks. I used to coach high school football here in Florida and I have personally worked with Dr. Sheppard who owns and invented BSF, he's a good guys and has some innovative concepts but they all hinge on large muscle core strength combined with good agility drills, etc... good stuff.. Dr. Sheppard is also a great motivational speaker. I also agree with some people's view on power breaks. Ouch, can be a very reasonable statement. I recently had about 150 kids come through an athletic club where I have my school and classes. Each part of the athletic club got a half an hour with each group of students. In all there was eleven groups. I had the police department come down and assist in giving a demonstration. I thought it went very well and on top of that it was FREE! What wonderful publicity. Getting back to breaking, my last demonstration was breaking. I preformed a variety of techniques. Some of those included speed or free hand breaks. That is when no one is holding on to the board when it is broken. A lot of those where with three or four boards. Also included in each breaking demonstration was one cinder block. In all I broke approximately sixty boards and eleven cinder blocks. I alternated sides of my body for breaking and even though I had no injuries I was quite soar by late evening. I have not broke that much in about five years. Everybody enjoy the breaking and let me know how it goes. Have fun, Luke --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Are the differences technical in nature (methods of punching, kicking, grappling, etc.)? Or, is the difference solely in how the material is presented (organization of curriculum, order of presentation, drills, models, etc.)? Not trying to set you up, or criticize. Just trying to get a look at your wheel. Thanks. Here's the actual true story behind the creating and enduring appeal of Tibetan Gopher Throwing. Several years ago I was speaking about my time training with the ROKs in Vietnam, and I mentioned that I only knew of three Hapkido practitioners attached to or working for the Korean army, Kim-Jung-soo, Baek, Nam-guk in the central highlands and Han, Bong-soo in Nha Trang on the coast, but during this time if you were teaching ANYTHING within the ROK army, it was considered Oh-duk kwan Tae Kwon Do, and while trying to get this across to the people I was speaking to, I said "I don't care what your training was in, Hapkido, Tae Kwon Do or Tibetan Gopher Throwing, you were a by God Oh-duk kwan stylist". It was the wierdest thing I could think of at the moment and it seemed to fit, so during subsequent lectures and to this day, I continue to make reference to this very strange term. There is a picture of Wayne Watkins, hidden somewhere on our website, receiving his TGT 14th dan (I believe) from Dr. Kimm, accompanied by the usual disclaimer. After this point in time, the name caught on and several people asked if they could use the term on T-shirts and cartoons etc. and I was happy to oblige. Wayne Watkins has since copyrighted several terms relating to this odd art (honest!) and has obtained the associated .com website, which we will maintain with some very odd artwork and other bizarre stuff. What an odd world...J. R.
