Hello Charles: While I don't recognize new styles (it is simply not my area of expertise), NKMAA does have a mandate to assist Korean style martial artists with whatever it is they need. We don't push our services on anyone, but it could include training and/or certification; however, I would require all background information and a good look at the skill levels. Certification may be granted only if the skill levels meets generally accepted Industry standards, the background information is to our satisfaction, and I can readily recognize the technique as being from a Korean art. I'm 20 and about half way through college now, working actively at my Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. I was just wonering if anyone out there had their own stories they'd like to share about opening their own school, what works, what doesnt, horror stories, Successes ect. It's something I'd someday like to do after making 4th degree Blackbelt. For one thing, I'm afraid I'd have a harder time than most Because I'm not Korean. So, Lets hear some stories :-) Dan O'Boyle Blue Belt Tae Kwon Do --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2004 06:52:46 -0600 (CST) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_Name_Game_?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Daryl: "......We refer to the art as "Shinse", but it is officially Shinse Hapkido, we owe a debt of gratitude to the 1000s of hours and decades of years spent sweating and bleeding on the HKD dojang floor, hince Shinse kwan Hapkido....." To my way of thinking, if one must do as much explaining as folks seem to be doing to rationalize why they are using the term "hapkido" to identify their art, something is wrong from the git. If you want to be "Hapkido" why not simply form a bond with a legitimate teacher of a Hapkido art, and remain loyal to that individuals' teachings? Why the need to construct something? Why the need to draw from other sources and put together something of your own making? If you want to be a Hapkido practitioner, find a source of Hapkido material and stick with that person--- warts and all.It seems that you want the name recognition of an established art without investing the time or work to lay legitimate claim to the title. I can tell you from experience that the Hapkido arts have some definite short-comings. There needs to be more groundwork, and the weapons are almost all anachrontistic novelties. So what? Its the path I have chosen and I make no apologies for the art. It is what it is. Why is it so important to make it something else but still invoke the older name? In closing, I would also like to say something about what older personalities have done in the name of an art. I have read that various folks often invoke constructing an art because there is an apparent similarity between what they are doing and what another better-known name has done previously. It may interest you to know that integrating material from another art is considerably more than simply borrowing techniques from this or that sport or art and putting them together in one pot. This is much the same as those dolts who make-up hyung for various competitions. Years on the mat doing the same technique over and over, then using the same biomechanics in the use of a weapon or in other MThand material will cause you to understand that what at first glance seemed similar are in fact not similar. All shoulder throws, for instance are not created equal, and the same goes for the philisophical underpinnings. I am sure would have a similar reaction if I borrowed various religious bits from an assortment of faithes and chose to call the result "Chritianity", yes? We at "Shinsei Whatever" wish we had called it Shinsei Kido or some equally bilingual descriptive. That way we could have been harassed by the best of both worlds. I would recommend it to anyone. It builds character. But, look at what we would have missed. I mean, look at the fun we have had in the Korean arena with the KHF and all the powers that be. But, to try to give credit where credit is due, we thought we would prove to our teachers we remembered how to spell Hapkido, or is that Aikido... I get so confused seeing as how the characters have about the same meaning between languages....." Your syntax and content seem to harken back to the same sort of spin- doctoring reminiscent of another earlier contributor. People who have observed your material generally agree that you teach something more akin to Japanese arts. Why not go and be an embarrassment to THEM? Why bother the Korean/American community? In your area of the country you have a number of well-respected sources for legitimate Hapkido instruction. Why not simply put your time in, earn your rank and standing? Whats keeping you back from doing things the right way? Why not take a couple of Escrima seminars and call what you do "escrima"? For my part, I don't know from KHF and the rest of the organizational alphabet soup. I DO know that I have spent an awful lot of time advocating for an art to which I owe much. In fact, way too much time to have entrepeneurs as yourself come along and think that they can bask in the same regard as legit practitioners just by mouthing the same words and saying the same things. BTW: One other thing about that "trash-talking"? My understanding of the usage for that perjorative is that the dialogue is based on "unfounded accusations" and "invectives". I am not sure what you are referring but I don't think that information can be identified as "trash-talking" when the information turns out to be true. I understand the need to protect the guarentor of your standing, but right now you look just a bit silly, don't you think? FWIW.
