My question of whether or not you punch or kick in your Hapkido, as well as my subsequent long-winded posts about the "no force" issue was in response to this statement that you made. <<>> So, in essence you DO use force in your Hapkido for striking and grappling? Am I to understand that you simply make a distinction between a "good" use of force, as opposed to a "bad" use of force. For example, throwing a person by generating force from the core musculature (glutes, hips, buttocks, abs, obliques, spinal erectors) is generally more efficient (less taxing, more forceful, more balanced) than trying to throw a person by merely using the "brute" strength of the upper torso muscular (pecs, triceps, biceps, traps, lats). If that's the case, then I can see where you're coming from. It was the "force is not a part of HKD" quote that threw me (pardon the pun). Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr. Stovall, I have to agree with you here...although I would like to point out that there are some problems with the practicality of training for the scenario. For example, there is a student in our class that is a somewhat shy, and very reserved 15 year old girl. She is sometimes prone to panic attacks, and finds her self fighting them off in certain situations. When we are training for one of the very scenarios you are describing (wa ki, defense from on your back, opp. grips throat and punches face) she finds herself having this difficulty. I guess what I'm saying is that in the real world these things can happen, but many don't move in circles and places that are going to find them in a situation of defending themselves from that jacked-up redneck. I often find myself the target of others aggression since I'm someone that stands out in the crowd, ;) but she will probably never need to use hapkido for self defense. Of course her dad was teaching her how to shoot long before we met her...I suppose what I'm trying to say here is that you can't train realistically with some people. I just ain't happening. She would have left long ago, if we had tried to force her to train in the manner in which I like to, (aggressively, with ground work and contact, etc.) Sometimes you got to compromise. Right now there is a virus going around that is self replicating andrandomizes subject headings, message bodies and the like. It is typically a .jpg or a .zip file. I'll find the actual warning I received from Avenge (Macafee) and post it.
