Other than stretching, are there any conditioning exercises that will help both to recover this muscle and also regain both confidence and muscle tone to regain the kick? Thank you Pat" hi pat, we do some great strengthening exercises for these. we lie on our backs, lift the legs off the floor so the feet are about 6-12" off the ground. then spread eagle the legs slowly, finally bringing the legs back together. we do several of these before ever letting the feet touch the ground again. there's also the hapkido kick (we call 'em hkd knee breaks) where you stand in ready, bring the right leg up, knee first, knee high and out to right, foot with toes pointing out at 45 degrees, and strike to your opponent's knee with your foot blade or foot heel. doing a boatload of those will build strength in the muscles. doing them s-l-o-w-l-y, will also build up strength and endurance. 'nuther: slow-mo roundhouse. will help you build up that strength again and will help with muscle memory. in order to limit the strain on your muscle while its repairing itself, start with lower roundhouses and raise height as you feel that muscle can handle it. there's always the old laying on your side, leg lifts as well. once your muscles can hack it, you can also add ankle weights to increase strength. If you are honor-bound and live by the tenets of Tae Kwon Do, which I'm sure you do, then I expect you will respect my request. As the United States' preeminent source of information on matters related to Tae Kwon Do, Tae Kwon Do Times Magazine has an obligation to its readership to present a fair and balanced view on the various heated issues that currently surround the world of Tae Kwon Do. I differ with you greatly on your assessment and summarization of the WTF/Un Yong Kim "Scandal," and expressed as much in my very first letter to you entitled "'Gangster' a Harsh Moniker for Man Who Has Devoted Life to Tae Kwon Do." You did not express an interest in publishing this article perhaps due to my direct challenges to many of your arguments. In my revised letter, I have removed all direct references to your article, and have respectfully refrained from challenging you directly. I have presented a pro-Kim interpretation of events to juxtapose your decidedly anti-Kim and anti-WTF stance. I believe it is only fair and right that your publication present this apposing view, lest it's objectivity, and therefore its credibility, be called into question. By publishing this alternative view, the Tae Kwon Do Times would help to placate concerns that it is merely an instrument of anti-WTF, anti-Kukkiwon, and anti-Un Yong Kim propaganda. For your reference, I have attached my revised letter, which I again respectfully request be printed in the next issue of Tae Kwon Do Times. I have been a subscriber to Tae Kwon Do Times Magazine for the past 5 years, and plan to continue to subscribe well into the future. I hope that my faith in your publication is not misplaced. In All Sincerity, Donald Ben Garen ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------- Dear Editor: Accusations and speculation abound over the recent scandals involving Dr. Un Yong Kim, the WTF, and the ITF. Questionable financial dealings, influence-peddling, etc., etc. ad infinitum all seem to be pointing to a guilty verdict without due process in the minds of many lookers-on. However, I believe much of this finger-pointing and stone-tossing fails to consider whether, in fact, Dr. Kim might be acting on noble, honorable, and altruistic motives after all. Consider the following plausible scenarios: IF it were true that Dr. Kim were keeping millions of dollars of WTF funds in his house, perhaps this money was to cover operational expenses that must surely be incurred when one is the head of an international organization with the global reach of the WTF. These expenses might include everything from international transportation costs to incidental expenses and per diem to even gift-giving, which is an integral component of many Asian cultures. From an academic standpoint, we might trace the convention of gift-giving that is so prevalent throughout Asia directly to the Buddhist notion of "Dana," or "voluntary giving"...one of the six "paramitas" or "perfections" that Buddhists aspire to cultivate within themselves: 1.) Generosity (voluntary giving); 2.) Discipline; 3.) Patience; 4.) Exertion; 5.) Meditation; and 6.) Wisdom. Many corporations even go so far as to provide executive expense accounts to cover such gifts, in addition to dinner-meetings, hospitality, and entertainment; all of which are standard fare when it comes to international negotiations and networking, particularly within the high echelons in which Dr. Kim operated. IF the money allegedly kept at his house were to be used for such purposes, I believe Dr. Kim's end-goal was never personal gain or aggrandizement, but rather furthering the globalization of Tae Kwon Do, which has been his life's mission for the past several decades. With regard to the allegation that Dr. Kim somehow was able to make a trade of Korea's bid for the 2010 Olympics in exchange for his ascendancy to the vice presidency of the IOC, I don't fully understand how a connection could be made between the two. However, IF he were somehow able to make such a deal, I believe his Korean critics are being too impatient in their unwillingness to give up immediate gain for the potential long-term benefits of having a fellow country-man on the board of the IOC. Not only would this benefit the future of Tae Kwon Do but, indirectly, the country of Korea as well. I'm sure, however, that there would be some unhappy hotel and resort owners, unwilling to sacrifice short-term profits for this higher cause. In fact, it would not surprise me to find out that these are, in fact, the major players in the conspiratorial faction that seems to be out for Dr. Kim's blood. Finally, let's look at the allegations that Dr. Kim gave over one million dollars to the ITF. IF this were true, I believe this should be viewed as a gracious, good-faith, good-will gesture on the part of Dr. Kim to attempt to reconcile the decades-old rivalry that has existed between these two high-profile organizations. Was it not General Choi's dying wish that the WTF and ITF ultimately be reunited? Any laws set in place to discourage such a transaction are contrived, unnatural, and fail to take into consideration the depth, spirit, and other idiosyncrasies of this unique case. I appeal to all who are as eager as I am for a swift, favorable outcome in this case to maintain an open-mind, and to have faith in the good intentions of Dr. Kim, a man whose life has been a model of service, both to his country and to the world. I just had one that I cleaned yesterday. It was a worm which has been rated as wild. The variant which was on my laptop, and I really don't remember opening any attachments, was in a file labelled sexy.pif. Here is what Norton says about it: W32.Netsky.B is a mass-mailing worm that uses its own SMTP engine to send itself to the email addresses it finds when scanning the hard drives and mapped drives. This worm also searches drives C through Z for folder names containing "Share" or "Sharing," and then copies itself to those folders. The Subject, Body, and email attachment vary. Symantec Security Response has developed a removal tool to clean the infections of W32.Netsky.B@mm. Also Known As: W32/Netsky.b@MM [McAfee], W32/Netsky.B.worm [Panda], WORM_NETSKY.B [Trend Micro], Moodown.B [F-Secure], I-Worm.Moodown.b [Kaspersky] Variants: W32.Netsky@mm Type: Worm Infection Length: 22,016 bytes Systems Affected: Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows XP Systems Not Affected: Linux, Macintosh, UNIX, Windows 3.x (Source: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.netsky.b@mm.html) If you go to the bottom of the page, it will give you alot more information in regards to subjects, headers, and body text from suspicious emails. I have also received no less than 6 infected emails yesterday. I think the way I got it, was by sending an email to my personal account from work, and both MSN and norton seem to find it right away. Other than that, I'm not sure how I got it, because I don't open attachments that I am not expecting. Anyhow, just be careful. This will help to get more blood flow to the injured area and will promote healing. Also, use massage to loosen and stretch scar tissue. Hope this helps Pat. Now that folks is adren....nothing fancy, just a pure open can of WoopA$$ I for one wouldn't want to try to intercept her wrist :-)......" You know how there is always that point of debate about the line between art and practice? I think you are pointing up something here that likewise simply does not get much treatment in the typical MA class. As was pointed out earlier it is a whole lot tougher to restrain a person than just take them out. To this end bouncers walk a tenuous line between doing the "right thing" and taking care of themselves. If Ms Whoop-a$$ wants to throw a tantrum until she gets what she wants, thats on her (ETOH not withstanding). She loses her right of "free speech" when her "expression" impinges on my right not to have to listen to her. The guy that got backed into the bar was probably intimidated by a good-sized angry woman which raised conflicts inside of him about "hitting a woman", "hitting a customer", "losing his job" or "looking like a wuss" in front of people he knew. For myself I draw no such fine distinctions. A person who is that out of control is a clear danger to herself and others and gets takendown and I would make no apologies for it. Let me also say that I think that this is where people who subscribe to traditional KMA get a bad rap. "Traditional" does not mean substituting talk for action, or refined talk of philosophical minutia over white wine. Traditional KMA can be every bit as practical though followed in concert with a higher level of organization and guided by a higher ethic. This is also why I think it is a mistake to mix and match "sport objectives" and "SD objectives" in the same class--- or perhaps even in the same school. FWIW.
