Out of 31, 28 members attended the meeting. He is succeeding Dr. Un Yong Kim who founded the WTF in 1973 and had been in its leadership in the last 30 years. Park will be in the acting presidency pending the election of a new President in the extraordinary General Assembly. The meeting, convened to deal with the WTF leadership crisis caused by the announcement of Dr. Un Yong Kim to resign on Jan. 9, 2004, also decided to convene the extraordinary General Assembly on the occasion of the 5th World Junior Championships to be held in Sunchon, Korea, on June 12-18, 2004, to elect a new WTF President. However, the exact date of holding the special Assembly has yet to be decided. Before electing Park as the Acting President, the attendants made a decision through a vote on whether Dr. Kims resignation announced earlier through press conference should be accepted or not. In the vote, 18 supported to accept his resignation while four opposed to it, three abstained and three others remained non-committal. The election in the Executive Council, the highest decision-making body of the WTF, stood for the first-ever change of command in the leadership of the organization since its establishment in 1973. Park will play a role of WTF Acting President until the convocation of the extraordinary General Assembly in June in which a new leader, to complete Dr. Kims remaining term of office, will be elected. Before concluding the meeting, the attendants unanimously designated Dr. Kim as WTF Honorary President in recognition of his contribution to the development of the sport. Out of six Vice Presidents, five attended the meeting. They are Park who was elected Acting President; William Hybl, former president of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC); Nat Indrapana, Thai IOC member; Sang Lee, former president of the United States Taekwondo Union and Cha Sok Park, President of Pan-Am Taekwondo Union. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Chosondo@aol.com Date: Sun, 29 Feb 2004 15:00:31 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Korean Gov. But what does that have to do with us here in the U.S.? Just playing the devil's advocate. Ian A. It gets thrown around so much but I never get a straight answer on what it means, exactly, to be "recognized" by the Korean government. Comments? Anybody? <<< Here is it in a nutshell Bruce. Certain jobs in Korea such as police officers, bodyguards, etc. are required to have rank in a martial art. Many get rank in Hapkido. For the dan rank to be accepted when a person applies, it needs to have come from an organization that is recognized by the govt. I believe it is the ministry of health, or physical education, or something like that. If the organization is recognized, the rank from that organization will suffice when applying for a position such as police officer. Because a number of people will learn HKD because they desire to become police officers, my instructor said it was important for him to run his school under an organization that will give this for his students. In addition, he teaches under the same organization that his instructor does, etc. Now, since more organizations are being recognized, more school's students are alowed to use that rank to apply for these jobs. Other than this, it doesn't really mean as much. (unless you want to make it more with promotional stories - which goes on in the US, not Korea) Ian responded: >>>Thank you for this post. The question is, what does it all mean? Especially to those who feel that they must belong to a Korean based org. in order to validate their Hapkido experience.<<< Personally, I don't think it means much at all. I see people switching organizations like they change a hat. One week I'm saying organization X is the best in the world, and the following week I call Korea, talk with a new organization and make a deal with them, change the patch on my uniform and start saying organization Y is the best in the world. Hmmm... Hapkido, and martial arts, should be about relationships. (Dang, have I said this before???) I have rank from a Korean government recognized organization because my instructor, in Korea, belongs to that organization and he gave me the rank. Why would I want a piece of paper from someone in Korea who doesn't know me? Why would anyone? (Other than the obvious - to try and impress people and use it to make money) I don't really understand people shopping for rank and organizational affiliation. I want to be affiliated with those that I have a relationship with. Those that I learn from. Those that I have something in common with because we strive for the same goals (isn't that what an organization is for?) It is sad that some think an organization is for impressing people (and who are those that are actually impressed?) and to use to make more money. So in a nutshell, why don't we all go back and rent the Karate Kid movies again. We can all learn a lot from Mr. Miyagi. Martial arts are inside, not around your waist or on the wall. As of this minute, I have over 200 pre-registrations and there are many names on the reservation list at the Jackson SW Hotel whose applications I have yet to receive, and of course, about 20% of the total will sign up Friday or Saturday out of the blue. Every seminar here is like a family reunion and I always look forward to seeing Rich, Ray, Rudy, Mac, Jere and Kat and the many other friends, both old and new, that post on this great list and I'm sure that Ray will get a "DD group picture" sometime. Dr. Kimm will be arriving on Friday evening and will have pictures, DVDs and, of course, his incredible books for sale, so this is a great opportunity to meet one of the KMA legends, and actually sit down and talk to him. I will be staying at the Hotel all weekend as well, but if anyone needs me or Wayne, the school number will be forwarded to my cell phone, as usual. In the past few weeks, I have been contacted by several people interested in certification from one organization or another, and I have advised all of them that the folks that will be here will be happy to talk to them, BUT, when I remind them to bring all their certificates as well as WHO they trained under and when, they seem to lose interest. I have yet to receive an application from a single one of them. What a surprise! On a side note, while I appreciate the thought, I am GM of nothing and wish that the title was not used in front of my name.....It makes me feel rather odd, especially around the likes of Dr. Kimm. I'm sure that someone will file a report after all this is over. See ya soon.....JRW --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: Gov't recognized HKD orgs To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 29 Feb 2004 13:04:00 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > to have come from an organization that is recognized by the govt. As I have visited and breifly trained with you on the island, would like to be your first "Mainlander". Just how much was that certification fee, I mean exam fee, agian? Hello Rich: You are waay to humble. Actually I meant to expand on your idea of people getting along by getting on the mat, and I figured Jackson would be a good place for anyone to see just how valid that idea of your was. There are people at JRs event of all sorts of martial art backgrounds, and they have but one common thing in mind... having a blast training together. If folks can't make it there, they are most welcome to join us at Master Thomas's event in Austin, TX at the end of March. We'll have a good time there too:) Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Sun, 29 Feb 2004 20:44:20 -0500 From: Rudy Timmerman To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] (no subject) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Kat writes: > I am looking forward to seeing and working out with everyone > again.
