Undoubtable they are related, but indominable spirit is the emotional characteristic which makes one unwilling to give up. I believe Bruce gave a very good discription of courage. Courage is the willingness to do what you believe is right, no matter what the personal cost. Courage is the decision to act in the manner you believe is correct in any given situation, regardless of what others are doing, and following through with that action. Let me give you a real time example. I know a young lady, who was involved in a horrendous car crash when she was a gup student. She was literally crushed. She spent weeks in intensive care and months in the hospital. She was told by every doctor she would never walk again, much less do anything physical. But emotionally she never accepted that verdict (Indominable Spirit). Based on her unwillingness to accept the defeat of a limited life (Indominable Spirit), she made the decision (which she believed was right, Courage)to begin exercising and learning to walk again regardless of the extreme pain. And she kept making that decision(Courage) day after day, year after year(perseverence). And when she could walk, the doctors told her she would never be able to run or practice Tang Soo Do again. Now obviously, this puts everything into nice neat boxes. But if you are going to teach someone else, I have found that those nice neat boxes are necessary in order get the concepts across, at least to begin with. I strongly believe that courage is not dependent on what others have accomplished or failed. Courage is your decision to do what you believe is right, regardless of what everyone else is doing. And now, just because I am so proud of this particular young lady, as Paul Harvey would say, the rest of the story, so far. Last year at my organization's regional dan test, just before the beginning of the test, we listened, as we always seem to do, to too many of the testing students boo boos and ouches and this and that. The same young lady was standing on the front front row of this testing group, already a cho dan and testing for e dan. She would not and did not mention her injuries or the constant pain she lives with. She did very well on her test without any special consideration, completing her full 4.5 hour test in spite of the fact that she got 2 serious and painful reinjuries. And thank you even more for sharing your student's "story." As much as she has and will continue to "do the work" to live the fullest life she possibly can, it would be that much more difficult for her without people like you in her life who remain open to her possibilities and are willing to guide part of her process. Knowing that you have expectations for her and that you believe in her undoubtedly feeds her indomitable spirit. I'll bet it's not always easy for you and I wonder if you ever wonder just who's the teacher and who's the student in this relationship? What an awesome opportunity for you both and for all of those who are able to share her journey. Thank you both- Denise --__--__-- Message: 5 From: PETER.MCDONALDSMITH@london-fire.gov.uk To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Indomitable Spirit and Courage Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 19:56:20 -0000 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Danny a positive story. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir, I read all the discussion on FORCE and what it is and where it comes from and it boggles the mind to think that people do not read and take something like the "sip sam seh" to heart, as the essence of your power is shown there. I used to feel that muscle strength was everything(I still lift), until the day a veritable shaved gorilla came to class and smiled politely as I struggled to extricate myself from his grip. At that time, I benched close to 400 lbs and never really beleived those stories my instructor would tell about "no matter how stong you are" or "no matter how big you are",or "someday everything thing else will fade away and all there is left is TECHNIQUE". I will always remember my instuctor's reaction, no laugh, no smile, just a twinkle in his eye as he re-iterated those same stories. After class, I went to him and asked if he would be kind enough to demonstrate for me once again , and if he would, I would try to listen as though the message came from the "burning bush". He talked about how all the power ALWAYS comes from the waist(no matter if from the ground up through the legs or whatever, it still has to transmit through the waist) and told me again that if these lessons were learned, while extreme differences in strength may be an issue at times, there would never be a substitute for TECHNIQUE. I did get a chance to practice with the aforementioned gentleman again, and my techniques worked well, much to my joy and expectation. I never saw the gentleman again, and have often wondered if he was a "plant" to teach a lesson. I won't ever ask, as it no longer matters. These lessons affected all my training, even to today, I teach this way and even catch myself telling the same thing about strength and TECHNIQUE.
