At least the airlines were nice enough to loose my luggage on the way back to Fargo, ND instead of on my way to Jackson. This year I hope that everyone on DD who had a camera during the DD group pictures is able to send us a copy. Jere R. Hilland www.HapkidoSelfDefense.com --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "J R Hilland" To: Date: Mon, 8 Mar 2004 22:59:31 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] What is a ki hap Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Kihap, is the physical manifestation of hapki, the physical vocalization of ki and the harmonizing of the physical technique with the internal power for the advanced practitioner. It is a means of breathing out during a technique instead of holding the breathe for the new beginning student. Ki does not flow well when the breathe is held and the body may remain tense. In non-ki arts, kihap and hapki are often misunderstood. A ki-hap sounds like a deep 'H' sound, not from the throat or high in the chest, but coming from low in the abdomen, specifically the danjun (two inches below the navel). Hap: Harmony or unification, to join or become one with. The word carries the feeling of strength and power of natural forces. Hapki: Blending of ki. Practitioners of hapkido attempt to harmonize their ki with that of their partners and that of the larger environment. Ki: Vital energy; spirit of life force; the essence of universal energy. Ki is the life force that is in and all around us. It is the consciousness of nature. It is in all aspects of our lives and it is central to the understanding of hapkido. Danjun: Ocean field of ki. Your danjun is specifically an area in the lower abdomen. It is referred to as the motivation for all movement. Without danjun movement, you will be off balance and without power. It is the 'center' of the body. We learn about extension by beginning with the danjun; it is the base from which your energy extends outward. Your ki is generated from the danjun; it is only the beginning of understanding power, balance and extension of ki. Please note: This is specifically the method I teach my students, the way I was taught, and is the way I can most easily explain something that is hard to put into words. Jere R. Hello Linda: I put a similar question to one of the most successful martial art school owners some time ago, and his answer was: " I stop trying to contact them by mail, phone (or motivate them by other means) when I receive their death notice." In other words, never give up! I agree 100 %, because we can never give up on another human being if we truly feel what we have to offer is of value. My first question is about kukkiwon certificates.I have a 15 yr old son that just got his Black Belt, because he doesnt like to compete we got him a school certificate, with the understanding that in the future should he want to compete internationally we could then send for a kukkiwon certificate,Is this a bad idea?will you please explain?? The other question I have is a couple weeks ago ya"ll were discussing a round house using the ball of your foot rather than the top, when I asked our Ass. Instuctors {our main Instructor is still in Iraq:( } they had no idea how to help me figure it' out but now with the "standard poomse's" our forms have changes and thats one of them,so would someone PLEASE explain to me how thats done?and also what the differance in the two is? Thanks, Sorry about the long post! My friend and I drove (I drove, he rode) a total of 19 hours there and back for 10+ hours of training. It was worth every minute of it. I was great to see so many KMA people in one place, having fun. The emphasis is on having fun, because everyone I saw was smiling and laughing, unless they were volunteers. Big thanks to Master West, you are a great host. To all of your folks for putting in their time as well. Thanks to Masters Booth, Boruki, Gordon, Hilland, Hodder, Kirsch, Lyons, Mangum, McHenry, Smith, Terry, Thomas, Timmerman, for sharing their love of Korean martial arts. **I figured alphabetical rather than rank would be easier. ** Master Terry, as promised, here is a link to the Dojand Digest group photo I took as well as other photos from this weekend I added Mr. Watkins in as well. If anyone would like me to post a high res printable version let me know and I will put it up on the site. a bit of forwarning, it will be big, maybe between 5 and 15 Megs. http://homepage.mac.com/ep3/index.htm Again Thanks everybody. Edward Peters Austin, Texas. P.S. my favorite part of the weekend, watching a bunch of very respectful martial artists trying to get on an elevator. there was a lot of "after you" "No, after you" "no no, please after you." How DOES rank work when getting on an elavator? --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "George Peters" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 09 Mar 2004 00:41:57 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Ray Terry on wristgrabs.. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir: Where I practice, wrist grabs are taught one on one straight across, then one on one cross grip, then two handed grip on one hand. Incidently, I have heard GM Kim refer to Ho Sin Sul by saying"you have hapkido for Ho Sin Sul". Do you know why he would have refered to this in this way? I had to read this book for one of my college classes, and while I can't comment on your specific questions, I think that being a martial arts instructor fits into my Hedgehog Concept more than anything else. For others on the list that don't know, the Hedgehog Concept is basically where three circles converge, those circles being 1) What you are passionate about, 2) What you can be the best at, and 3) What drives your economic engine (makes you money). So, does being a martial arts instructor (Not just talking to Linda here) fit your Hedgehog concept? --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Tue, 9 Mar 2004 03:27:15 -0800 (PST) From: Dena M To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] back from Jackson Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net This was my first experence with anything besides Taekwon-Do, I want to thank everyone for making us feel welcome and a big thank you to everyone that helped me and Deb at the seminar. We had a great time. It was a wonderful seminar, lots of information, I am still trying to sort it all out in my head. Hopefully I will be able to remember some if it. I really liked the clothing grabs, kick defense, and the palm strikes the best. Wish now that I had just taken those courses over and over instead of everything else. Don't get me wrong I really liked everything, it is just that I now have everything so mixed up in my head that I am having trouble remembering what I did on the first day. I thought I would introduce you all to a similar art I have been recently made aware of.. The syllabus for Siberian Penguin Bashing is very simple. Black belts are awarded for anyone capable of clubbing the flightless fish eater a distance greater than 320.. The art only has one technique, which can be practiced in this virtual training simulator.. left click once to start the viscious penguin attack, then either left click and hold (release to swing) or just left click again to swing.. link to the SPB training simulator: http://home.tele2.fr/kcv/pinguin.swf Happy training..
