BTW, GM Sereff met General Choi in 1966 and converted to the ITF and TKD at that time. What the heck guys?" My Dear Friends, The only thing that kept me from crying on the floor like a baby this weekend was participating in the Georgia AAU State Qualifier with 13 of my students. Due to the reconstruction of my right ankle I was in a cast and would have been unable to REALLY enjoy all the hapkido love that was shared this weekend. You will never really know how much it pained me to miss GM Kimm, GM West, GM Timmerman, GM Hodder Master Whalen, Master Booth, Master Mac, Master Lee, and countless others all in one place. On the bright side, I am proud to say all 13 of my students qualified for nationals and only one (5th place advanced 8/9 olympic sparring) did not receive at least one trophy. Little Melissa (age 7 orange belt) took the dojang bragging rights with two 1st's (forms and point sparring). This 6 million dollar ankle has also caused some of my senior students to really shine demonstrating in class, chauferring me to two tournaments and classes over the last week, and keeping my spirits high while on crutches. Meanwhile I am developing some secret techniques using the plastic aircast as a weapon :-) Ooops, I better not let Dr. Tsao find out I'm back on the dojang floor with my aircast on :-) Because I AM coming to Jackson in August. And I will be 110% by September for the 4th Annual Moja Kwan Camp when I reveal secret advanced aircast techniques and be issuing dual 12th Dan certificates in air cast ryu jujitsu and takeyourdough :-) Come to think of it some capri dobohk pants sure would be easier about now :-) Be Well, Charles Richards Supreme Eternal Great Grandmaster Air Cast Ryu Jujitsu __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? When I started TKD - you did not see an instep round house kick in the dochang at all (at least those I was around) and you did not see Karate types doing either. You did begin to see it in tournaments when the bend in the ankle could give you a couple of extra inches reach - esp. if you had on foot pads. The advantage of a couple more inches in a point tournament is obvious. All of the instructors I had early on were very specific about the point of contact with the foot when doing a roundhouse kick - the ball of the foot - not the instep. In my opinion the use of the instep came as a result of use in tournaments. To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net There is also other ways to perform this; from the short sound to a longer one. An example of the longer version, think of a weight lifter bench pressing getting that last rep, some guys hold their breath (*which to an non-knowledgeable person in regards to ki power can be bad), and sometimes they let out this long grunt sound. That sound is similar to the sound makes...you typically will hear this because one is cultivating their ki power. Jye George Peters wrote: Good Sir, I liked your answer in your post regarding breathing, and wish to perhaps add a little something to the mix. In TSD where I train, we use a loud kihap in class and try to encourage students to remember to use this(kihap) when sparring, doing Ho Sin Sul, Il Soo Sik, etc. When I saw you say you use varying levels of kihap according to each level of application,I was reminded of what an old friend who practices Kung Fu told me long ago regarding this. After the first time we sparred, he told me to be very careful how much air one expells upon the execution of technique, and to try to learn a sharp inhale after kihap to replenish the lost volume in the lungs. He also encouraged a "quiet" kihap to promote this. He did acknowledge however, that the loud kihap is an excellent thoracic exercise when one does basics. Anyway, this has worked well for me and has withstood the test of time, and so may have some worth to others. I also was reminded of the Kyo Sa Nim test I took and one of the test questions was" What is kihap, and what are the positive uses of such to the best of your knowledge?" To this day I still ponder these things from time to time and am impressed by thieir unceasing relevance. It's kind of like how chi's flow of energy is sometimes restricted when the breath is held. jye FirstPe315@aol.com wrote: Dakin: Interesting about your style of TanJun Breathing. You very well know that there are many ways to practice TanJun Breathing. When we do TanJun Breathing the whole body is not tensed. In fact, in our philosophy, this works against the concept that we are trying to cultivate. Our hands/fingers are always tense and projecting energy and our TanJun point is always strong (i.e. our whole abdominal area) but the rest of our body is very relaxed. I'm not going to go into a dissertation about this but basically there are many ways to practice TanJun Breathing that teach your body and mind certain things without doing it as a tension exercise. Jye andrew pratt wrote: All, Jye posted a long article on the 'Moo Yeh Do Bok Tong Gi ' > defeated. Near the end of this conflict, a Chinese military text entitled, Ki Hyu Shin Zu, authored by the Chinese military strategist and martial artist, Chuk, Kye Kwang was discovered. The text had been acquired from a slain Japanese General. This manuscript was then presented to Korean King Sun Jo (1567 - 1608). Within its pages was detailed a system of Chinese weapons and hand-to-hand combat, designed specifically for warfare. King Sun Jo was so impressed by the methods presented in this text that he invited Chinese Generals and Chinese Martial Art Masters who employed this system to visit his capital - which they did. From this contact, he ordered one of his Generals, Han Kyo, to take what he had learned from both the text and the demonstrations a! nd design a new system of battlefield combat. < This is an interesting story that I haven't heard before. Jye, do you have sources for this? I am not sure why the Korean's (properly Chosonites?) needed to acquire the manual from a slain Japanese general. After all, there were Ming soldiers in Korea for the whole 7 years of combat who were trained using this manual. Moreover, this tale just begs the question as to where the Japanese general got the manual from (since his country was at war with China as well as Korea and prior to the war there had been little contact between Japan and China for the previous one hundred years.... I am not sure that Sun Jo(sic) was ever aware of the manual or requested a demonstration of the techniques. I know that the senior wartime state councillor Yu Songnyong was aware of the book and tasked Han Kyo with obtaining a copy. Han Kyo's task was not to 'design a new system' but to introduce the Ming techniques to the Choson military corpus of techniques. Incidentally, I don't think Han Kyo was a general either. If memory serves me right he was a scholar (it's been a while, maybe I am mistaken).
