That being said, he seems to gone out of his way to distance himself, so he must be viewed as his own man, until he proves otherwise. >From Mr. Hackworth I had heard that TKDT may take several months to publish an item that had been submitted to them. I cannot say either way, other than it may be true, and that Mr. Arce should be given the benefit of the doubt in this matter. He has an awesome school in Woodland Hills and has over four large mat areas. Really a huge facility that many of the best in LA come to as Master Fariborz has been around a long time and has one of the largest facilities to film in (Bas Rutten, Steve Sexton, and many others). He teaches Hapkido Blend...as he unabashedly teaches BJJ, Kali, etc. into the curriculum (and yes, he gives credit where credit is due). No big isn't always better, but it definately has advantages. Sorry about the plug but it's a great school. Brooke Thomas Hapkido Blend --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Lasich, Mark D." Rick Clark wrote: [snip] >Would it not make more sense to train a >person from day one in the response you want to overwrite and not have >to retrain the individual? I guess if the mechanics were mutually exclusive, this would be OK. However, there are times when you can couple the rechambering action with the hip action, with stepping, with dropping down in your stance, with, with, with....This can ALL add even more power to a technique. So, no, I don't believe at the Dan level you need to "overwrite" or "retrain" I believe you are just complementing what they have learned up to that point. You simply can't throw the whole book at a new student and expect them to learn it all. Systematically presenting the material, I believe, makes it significantly easier to learn, and I have come to respect the way this is laid out in the Songahm curriculum. My son is in T-Ball, and it simply drives me crazy when these over-driven parents are barking a list of 10 things for their poor little 4 year old to remember: "choke up on the bat, put your weight on the back foot, step toward the pitcher, swing level, look at the ball, don't pick you nose, check your feet position, are your hands in the right position, get the bat up" How in the world is a kid to have fun when they get yelled at for forgetting #9 on the list????? Sometimes I think that people really skew the Hapkido material to the guep ranks and then are at a loss of where to take folks once they have reached their Dan rankings. I think this is one of the reasons that both GM Myung, and myself (in my own little way) distributed Hapkido material in the way that we did. Each rank has a new set of skills to learn and new challenges to address, and I think thats all to the good. On the downside, though, I must also report that more "goal-oriented" people tend to look at the curriculum and apparently conclude "this s*** is NEVER gonna end", as though their Hapkido endeavor should have a point where they finally "arrive". The reason I am raising this matter is the implications this has for the testing process, and I will use myself for an example. For my students a test is composed of 100% of the current material and then diminishing levels of previous ranks not to exceed 100 techniques plus hyung. In this way, for instance a person testing for 1st Dan would have to perform 100% of the Brown Belt Curriculum, 50% of the Blue, 25% of the Yellow and 12% of the White (not to exceed one hundered techniques in total), plue all of the hyung. Now if I am understanding the discussion correctly, and using the pattern I have just shared, the 2nd Dan test would only be the 1st Dan test repeated with 10% additional information---- which I assume would be the new hyung and its applications. Yet, Dan rankings are that "corner" we turn in our KMA careers when we profess to be ready for the "real" challenges of our training and development having determined that this or that particular art is the venue we have chosen to use. Please understand that I am not addressing student retention, or student boredom or the integrity of the arts. What I am wanting to comment on is the challenge of presenting reasonable and interesting challenges to a KMA practitioner so as to continue to invite growth and development. I am guessing this is a bit to one side of the discussion and its difficult to completely relate my concern here. My hope is that people appeciate my question. Comments? Anyone? I am the Grandson of Lee. I will write the English for him to answer you e-mail very clearly. I am sorry that I did not give KMAIA information in e-mails. It is very well known in Korea with over 7000 member Masters and Grandmasters. The KMAIA is an umbrella organization with 21 member association in Korea. The President of the KMAIA is Pan Gon Song, Governor of KyongGiDo province. Each city in Korea has member chapters like your fraternal organizations in USA. The International Chapter in Florida is for new members in USA. As head of the GrandMasters Board my duty is for handling memberships for instructors and GrandMasters directly to our office in Korea. All Grandmasters, Korean and Non-Korean apply directly to our office in Korea. My first instructor for TaeSooDo was Du Han Kim, son of General Du Min Kim. My YuSool (Hapkido) teacher was Yong Sool Choi. My wife is his cousin. Dr. Hackworth is International Chapter President. www.kmaia.qpg.com. He can assist you with answers by telephone. http://ma_success.tripod.com I will contact him about our meeting by e-mail. He will help me. It is important that the leaders of all martial arts with Korean lineage to be recognized by the Headquarters here in Korea. This gives us all a better pride in our various styles becuase we are sharing the philosophies and traditions of Korean history. The history of the philosophy and technique origin is what makes a martial art Korean. Not the birth place of the founder. Sometimes my reply may take one day. We have 14 hours time difference from the USA.
