I got home a little bit ago from a seminar with Grandmaster Bong Soo Han. Great time for those of you that didn't make it. I haven't read the books yet and I won't get a chance too until later this week. Being off for two days and away from home for four will come with a heavy price...like busting my rear for the next week trying to make up for it! :) A few questions: I've read over your recent replies to various messages and never see what style of Taekwondo you do? Who promoted you? Not meant to be disrespectful and not questioning your rank, just curious of his background. Thank you for the reply about the other systems you have experience with. In regards to seeing instructors that are lacking, I think we can all find examples on any side of the argument. I worked out with a Kung Fu guy that was first class all the way. Another local Kung Fu guy was a total joke. All in all, only looking at Karate/Taekwondo instructors with solid techniques, I think a general consensus would reveal that Karate people lack many of the jumping and/or turning kicks. Master Hendrix http://www.hendrix-martialarts.com held his first annual Hapkido Seminar this weekend led by his instructor, Grandmaster Bong Soo Han. http://www.bongsoohanhapkido.com/bio.htm I gotta tell ya, if Grandmaster Han were in his early 20's, he would be in great shape. Being in his 70's, he is in unreal shape. He did several kicks to head level without stretching (at least I never saw him stretch). The locks he demonstrated were broken down in very layman terms and covered thoroughly. Including Master West, Master Hendrix, and Grandmaster Han's crew, there were six people there helping roughly 80 people. Roughly six hours of locks, rolls, and kicks. GM Han was a very approachable and kind man. He took the time to ask questions and give very detailed replies. He signed books and took pictures until everyone was satisfied ... and there were a bunch to satisfy! Master Frisky has been with GM Han since 1969. That, in of itself, is very impressive. He was also very helpful and approachable. Master West and several of USKMAF black belts were there. It was nice seeing them again. Very gracious bunch. http://www.hapkido.com Great time - hope to see ya there next year. Does anyone know where I can find good DVD's to learn Tang Soo Do/Hapkido Forms? I have only briefly played around with the Palgwe forms. And I am interested in see/learnuing some of the TSD/HKD forms. Italy is a country. Europe is the continent the country Italy resides in. Africa is also a continent. I don't think I've heard of anyone saying they were "European American." Even "Asian American" is very ambiguous. Asian as in Russia, Iran, or China? All very, very different places on the same continent. If I remember correctly, there are over forty countries on the African continent. Hmmm...I know many many African brothers who come from various parts of Africa (different countries within the continent) who all say, I'm African. So it's two fold, they can either say they are African, or say what country in Africa they are from. I also have a friends from India that say I'm asian. The say that or I'm Indian. Also, I can appreciate what you're saying because my ancestors shed their blood in/for/on this country so I am definitely an American and deserve every right to say so, but it's funny...even form I seem to fill out that inquires about my race/nationality only has a bubble for "Black/African American".But seriously...I think it's a social thing. For instance, To whites I would say I'm African American...*I've met some whites who can't tell the difference between an African American and a jamaican, or a really really dark skinned Boriqua*, to Foreigners I say I'm American, To other Blacks, I say nothing, it's understood. To my jamaican, african, haitian, etc brothers, I say I'm black because it's understood as well. In the recent past, on another list, you have posted about a creating your own system with a mixture of your Ninja, boxing, & kung fu training and adding Taekwondo, Hapkido, weapons, and various other systems. I wish you the best in your endeavor. As for me, I'm going to keep studying Taekwondo and butcher Hapkido until I quit butchering it. :) Best regards, Thomas Gordon Florida _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list, 1600 members The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2004: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang Do you Yahoo!? What I can say is that Haemukwan@aol.com was Richard Hackworth's email, and while he had AOL was the AIM name I used to contact him when he was online. Haemukwan is the name of Richard Hackworth's Kwan, which he founded, and no one I have ever found has said yes the KMAIA is the body in Korea that all instructors must belong to. In my opinion, I think the KMAIA IS a Korean body, but no different from any other business entity registered there. In other words, he may have gone through pains to register it there as a business, but I don't believe for one second it is the regulatory body it is purported to be. If it were, I doubt he would be the current president based on the controversies surrounding him. I hope that clarifies it a tad. If not feel free to ask. f. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "michael tomlinson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2004 12:56:03 +0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] Mr. Beck Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I ran into Mr. Beck many many years ago. At one time he was a Master in the Y.K. Kim's TKD org.. down here in the Orlando area... I remember him being one of the guys on the testing boards.. years after this when I was doing a Hapkido seminar in the east florida area he picked up one of my flyers in Orlando and called me out of nowhere and offered to sell me rank in the Korean Hapkido Federation,,,, NOT the Korea Hapkido Fed... but as he said the Korean Hapkido Federation,, which he stated was the original and oldest org, it was really funny,,, he told me that I had to send the passport pic's etc... and he was real adament about me sending my S.S.N.-- I had no interest in anything he was selling but I thought I would see what he was up to. He told me that the "koreans" always wanted the S.S.N. for the number on your certificate!!! I ask him if he wanted to come over and "do" some Hapkido and he told me that he didn't need to see me "do" any Hapkido,,, all he needed was my money,, picture, application, and of course my S.S.N.-- what a trip!! It only take me 45min to 1 hour for the juniors and 2 to 2.5 hours for a 2nd gup (red) test....." I had never truely understood the idea of an exhaustive cataloging of techniques that some people advocate and I know that GM Myung does not do this when HE tests. I figure if I can't see whether the person has the right idea going in his test after 50 to 100 techniques, plus his forms, (and especially after working with them for months on end) I must be in the wrong business, yes? It was also nice to hear that your child stuck with things after the experience on the mat. My comment meant nothing more than that. > He advertises that he is a > 9th Dan in Hapkido (internationally certified), I believe. If so, what's it's relationship to the Togakure-Ryu system? Or, is "BBT" just a new name for the old Togakure-Ryu system? It gets to be a real thorn in my side, as it harms the students to give too much feedback, and when one Instructor likes to "help" another (confusing the poor student even more), it creates bad feelings among staff members and Instructors. This is ONE thing, you can't let slide. My reply: Are we reading the same book? I admire Gen. Choi for writing that history, and for publishing the truth of his background, but his values and mine are pretty different. He talks about using t'aekwondo students to beat up opponents, and about his part in the coup d'etat that placed Chung-Hee Park in the Presidency, even if he was not expecting Gen. Park to end up in control, let alone a dictator for life. What is it about Choi that you admire from this book? Thomas Gordon wrote: "Interestingly Young Gam Duk Ki Song relied on the government of Korea to give him creditability. (page 11)" My reply: Was this a page that Jye had posted, or had you? Whomever posted the link deserves our praise, as it includes some pictures of GM Song that I had never seen before. Good stuff! I have several books on t'aekkyeon and studied it back in the 1980s, and I liked it a lot. There's a lot there that is useful. And GM Song was listed as a national treasure by the Korean government.
