It fascinates me that there are so many high-ranking Hapkido masters/grandmasters out there. When you visit some Tae Kwon Do schools, there are many instructors who claim to be high-ranks in Hapkido. For example: 8th Dan Tae Kwon Do and 7th Dan Hapkido. The lay person who is seeking out a school in which to study Hapkido is definitely misled. For those who truly study Hapkido, you know it takes many years of practice to become proficient in the art. As far as lineage is concerned , Founder and Great Grandmaster Choi, Yong Sool promoted only two students to 9th Dan- Chang, Chin Il (New York) and Lim, Hyun Soo(Daegu City, South Korea). Therefore it would technically make it impossible to have so many 8th and 9th dans out there. However, it seems that if one starts their own system/style of Hapkido, one may become an 8th, 9th or 10th dan. There are many excellent Hapkido instructors and masters out there. However, it is important to realize that good Hapkido technique and hard practice is more important than rank. Also, Hapkido is not only meant to be a martial art, but way of life. One exercises the mind and body when practicing Hapkido. As Master Shin, 7th Dan under Grandmaster Lim, Hyun Soo told me...Hapkido teaches one to live a good and honest life first. I would also mention that John practices an art different from that headed by Don Angier. I am also taking this moment to underscore that John does NOT promote material associated with F. Loveret, who often gets resurrected at annoucements like these but is in no small disrepute regarding the Aiki arts. FWIW. Watching myself I know it is because I am part of something that is bigger than myself. Watching my students I sense it is because I remain sensitive to the goals THEY define for themselves rather than impressing some agenda of mine on them. Many students are hungry for skills to help them deal with Life on Lifes' terms and its isn't always a matter of "just keep training". Training is a venue--- and perhaps even a metaphor--- for communicating skills, but the students come back to know how following the Hapkido arts will give them an edge in surviving Lifes' daily tussles. Certainly I need to teach them "un-balancing", "un-timing" etc. on a physical plane, the the times I have seen lightbulbs come on is when I translate those same constructs into inter-personal skills or problem-solving. However, some people, especially those new to the art (any art for that matter), don't see it that way right away. When I get burned out, I take a break so to speak. I still train and go to classes. I just drop my intensity for a bit. For me it lasts just a few days and I am back up. I also talk to other people in the same style as well as other styles. I also read books and watch instructional videos. My self-imposed "slump" does not really last longer than two days. I would also talk to your instructor. They have experience being in a slump, or lightly motivated, and can guide you better. - Martin Von Cannon Instructor Tacoma, WA. Dojang A Black Belt is more than something you wear. What about his early students that popularized him and Hapkido, even tho he didn't use that name until later, and brought both to the attention of the world? In what year did Master Chang and Master Lim begin their study under Gm Choi? What year did they receive their 1st Dan? Note that the KHF lists two people as "Great Teacher". I think being a martial artist is always learning, its not something you should do half heartedly. I tell the junior students that i teach, Martial Arts(tkd in general) is not something you do just because it looks fun, yeah competing is fun, breaking boards , flying kicks that all looks fantastic. But the Martial arts are a way of life as jye stated. I think in order for anyone to stay motivated you have to want to learn, be open minded in the process of growing from a seed to a grand old tree. Being in Martial arts for more then 10 years with most of my training in tkd, i can tell you that most of the time learning the same techniques over and over again becoming bored with it does happen. But at the same right martial arts is the only thing i can really say i have control over, because to me working on the next level of my training can only come because i worked hard, i took the extra time out to really learn and study all aspects of my training. So when i go for my next test, or even when i teach a new technique to my students and i know the only way i can get held back is because i lacked the MOTIVATION to train outside of class. Not knowing your background as a Martial Artist, I think the more you train the more you learn self discipline. So staying motivated will become easier as you learn more. I think the internet was the best thing ever invented, because it allowed me to look up different styles, different things to read and spark my interest in the MA. I look up new kicks, different throws etc...and try to "perfect" them really helps keep my interest. I hope the more you learn, the more you become motivated and see the MA as a gift and not just something you do 2-3 times a week. Respectfully Yours, Henry gerrald wrote: Can anyone tell me what keeps them motivated to train in there respective arts. What can I do as a student in a dojang.
