I just had a belt test last week on white belts and yellow belts and they ALL had dan bong defense and knife defense and attack on their tests.... what I usually do is have them learn a defense from a grab, punch, dan bong attack etc.. and they practice all three everyday... I understand how a lot of people only teach knife and weapon techniques later in the curriculum but I choose to take a different approach and start it right from the get go... two reasons this works well IMHO is that the student learns body positioning and movement MUCH better in the begginning and two...... my common sense tells me that you will be attacked by a knife or club WAY before you are a 4th or 5th dan.... let's face it. if you are a 5th dan you should be able to stay away from most attacks before they happen.... I think the earlier you incorporate weapons the better off you are and so are your students...... Bad idea..." As someone mentioned the weapon is an extension of your arm. I think there are two schools of thought here.... Introduce the weapons while at the same time learning the techniques or learn the techniques with empty hand first then introduce knife, stick, etc. Yes, the weapon is so much more, therefore it is necessary in my opinion to first focus on the intricacies of the Hapkido techniques without a weapon. The student may focus more on the weapon instead of the core pieces/principles that make the techniques work. I am not saying that one must wait to be 1st dan to learn weapon defense, but a good basic foundation of techniques is helpful prior to introducing weapon defense. Where that point is depends upon the instructor and the system requirements.
