If I'm not mistaken, sine wave was being heavily taught at that time. I first met General Choi in 1991 at a patterns seminar in Denver. There is no mistake that sine wave was being pushed at that time. Sine wave is a function of the "Mass": portion of Gen. Choi's "Theory of Power". The theory itself is introduced in the 1965 single volume of the encyclopedia (it also contains the Karate Kata).Mass is not a part of the theory at that time. It isn't in my 1968 update either. These are the only two "old" volumes I have. I have a 1991 edition which mentions a 1988 edition. I'm not sure what happened from 1968 to 1988. I would like to find out when "Mass" is first mentioned and what, exactly, is written. It would be interesting to compare the verbiage to 1991. Recently, Master Mike Winegar (USTF director of technique) has been using and teaching sine wave in different areas -- breaking, for example. When I break with a step side kick and use the down up down motion of sine wave I can break more material. It has been an interesting experiment. Now for the part that will tick some people off -- if you are not doing the ITF (Chang Hong) patterns with sine wave, you are not doing them correctly. The developer of the art put this idea into his system. If they are being done in the old, flat line method then they are wrong. This doesn't mean they are bad -- just not what the founder wanted, and therefore, wrong. I don't mean any disrespect to any one out there. I'm just expressing my opinion. Gen. Choi evolved his system over several decades. With his passing it will be interesting to see what happens to his martial art. First of all, my apologies Melinda. :-) I didn't mean it to be the sweeping comment that it was; it was just pretty obvious from the "leave at side door" note in the address field on the magazine what the source was." LOL, nathan. yes, i guess that would be some good evidence for your point :). take care, mel :) Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy www.cjmaa.com 1.573.673.2769 Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply www.cjmas.com 1.877.847.4072 --__--__-- Message: 3 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Tue, 4 May 2004 23:35:41 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: knee injury/shin splints Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "I am currently fighting some knee issues. I have to wear knee supports when I run and do martial arts; otherwise my knees will be hurting. When I wear the supports, there is no pain during or after workouts. I am curious to the exact exercises you used to strengthen the muscles around the knee. I have another question for anyone out there. Does anyone have a successful method for preventing "shin splints"? Otherwise I'm buying stock in Alieve pain reliever! :o) Thanks in advance Brian Woodard" hi brian... for strengthening muscles around the knee: -sit on a table (thighs horizontal), letting your lower legs hang down (vertical) -with weights on your ankles, do lower leg raises, raising lower legs to be horizontal -increase weight over a period of weeks. for shin splints: might want to give them (the parts of the muscle which have separated from the bone covering, thus causing your pain)a bit of rest for a week to two weeks to give them a chance to catch up and re-attach to the bone. instead of running, for a coupla weeks you might try cycling or swimming since those are lower impact activities, but can still provide an aerobic workout. after working out, ice the shins. one thing that works great is getting dixie or styrofoam cups. put in a tongue depressor (or craft stick or popsicle stick) in the middle. fill with water and freeze. tear off the cup (or run hot water around the outside of the cup to melt it enough to free it from the cup). use your popsicle to ice up and down your shins while you watch tv, read, whatever. on a side note, you might want to tape the stick to stand straight up in the cup of water. that way it'll freeze right. if you just put it in sideways, you end up scraping yourself with the stick before you've used enough of your icepop. dont use heat if you notice swelling. taping for shin splints: if you have hairy legs...use prewrap or shave...or...take it like a man. you can make a nice latticework with athletic tape which will be helpful to provide compression over your shins. starting at the rear of the ankle, tape around to the front, but it should be at an angle. what i mean is if we're looking at someone's leg from the front. the tape should come from the middle of the back of the ankle, around the inside of the leg, arching up like \ towards the outside of the leg. then do one opposite that / . inside out, outside in, inside out, outside in, arching upwards always. be sure when you get to your calves to either flex your calf muscle to provide enough room for flexion during your workout, or cut a slit in the back, which might defeat the purpose of the lattice compression. good luck :) melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy www.cjmaa.com 1.573.673.2769 Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply www.cjmas.com 1.877.847.4072 --__--__-- Message: 4 From: DrgnSlyr5@aol.com Date: Tue, 4 May 2004 23:35:50 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Kevin Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net << Mostly I wanted to introduce myself.
