"In like manner I recall an Aikido demo here in Chicago where the participants were having the time of their lives disarming their partners with those stubby, wooden tantos and wooden swords. Much smiling and bouncing around and not a little flash as folks were playing to the audience. How very different when a visting instructor from NY took to the mat and began to do the most basic Aikido techniques with a partner holding a rather large bread knife. Gone were the smiles and the gay demeanor. Gone also were the fancy air-rolls. Suddenly everything was focus that you couldn't break with a hammer. I left the demonstration wondering why it took a sharp knife to bring out the focus I would have thought everyone might have been demonstrating all through the show. FWIW." very good point. it's no good training nonchalantly against a tando, thinking you will reserve your real stuff for a real knife. you will respond in the street as you train. act cocky and lackadaisacal in the dojang, and you'll get your sliced-up rear end handed to you in the street. --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Fri, 7 May 2004 08:09:43 -0700 (PDT) From: SPIVEY JR To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] alejandro, welcome Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net alejandro, welcome. you don't need permission to post here. just do as i did when i joined recently - just start posting! regards, howard y bienvenido compadre. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Eric Walker" To: Date: Fri, 7 May 2004 10:52:03 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Hapkido federation question Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Does any one on the list belong to Bong Soo Han's Hapkido Federation? My instructor is looking forward to retirement and has suggested that i look into his federation. We've been loosely affiliated with GM Park out of Tampa, but he isn't doing much with the WTHF. He told me that Park's WTHF is sort of "invitational" and although I could join it is sometimes difficult to get gup certificates out of him. I guess I'm not looking forward to being on my own really, but all things change. I would like to be involved with a good association but I'm not really certain of what criteria I should be looking for. We practice hapkido with a traditional flavor with groundwork and sparring and a little TKD thrown in for spice. The change over will probably take place by fall, so I'm not pressed for time. Any help or advice would be appreciated. But does anybody have a reference of a study that proves it? Mr. Martin said at one time that there is a study done at some university that proves that the SineWave delivers more power than the traditional techniques, i.e. straight line, hip twist, etc. Maybe in some special cases, I can see that a SineWave might be able to give you some extra power but in general I cannot convince myself that that is the case. On the other hands, it's easy to see how SineWave can be slower. I practice TKD for over 35 years. I started out with ITF, stayed with it until 4th Dan. I attended a seminar with General Choi as a color belt when he first introduced TKD to VietNam and before he invented SineWave, and to this day I have not done SineWave because the scientist in me is not convinced that it helps me at all. ------------------------------------- Luc T. AAU Taekwondo competitions feature both Olympic and Point sparring, and traditional Taekwondo forms, including WTF, ITF, and TSD/MDK forms may be performed. For more information visit http://www.aautaekwondo.org In This Issue: *AAU Teams Travel to Washington, DC *National Championship Heading For Record Numbers *USOC Schedules Taekwondo Meeting *Final Call For Entries: 3rd Annual Chris Canning Award of Excellence *Tournament & Events Schedule * AAU Teams Travel to Washington, DC The AAU National Taekwondo Teams will travel to the Washington, DC area for participation in the East Coast Championship on May 22nd. Both Junior and Senior Team members will be competing in Washington accompanied by both Men's coach, Mike Sanchez, and Women's coach Terry Gautreaux, as well as National Head Coach Jean Lopez. Master Friello will also be making the trip along with Masters Blair, Henry, and Giambi. We want to wish the Teams the very best of luck. *National Championship Heading For Record Numbers The AAU National Championship in Ft. Lauderdale looks like a major sellout. Our Headquarters Hotel, the Marina Marriott, actually sold their allotted 300 rooms by March 1st. Together we opened up an additional 100 rooms there and sold 150! Embassy Suites also reports having to close their room block, having sold 180 rooms on peak nights versus a 150 room block! Note, there are still PLENTY of rooms available at the rest of the hotels included in our block, but such an early sellout indicates a tremendous demand this year. Master Friello has indicated he expects well more than the 2,000 participants originally planned for. * USOC Schedules Taekwondo Meeting Another meeting has been scheduled for this Friday, May 7th, by the USOC personnel charged with managing and re-framing the National governing Body. Whatever the new course and/or new structure the USOC puts in place, members of the AAU Taekwondo Program are assured they will be well represented in this new Program! *Final Call For Entries: 3rd Annual Chris Canning Award of Excellence It's time to consider submitting your star athlete and outstanding citizen for the 3rd Annual Chris Canning Award of Excellence. The Chris Canning Award of Excellence was established in honor and memory of Christopher James Canning, an accomplished martial artist, who represented the sport and art of Taekwondo, along with its tenets, to their fullest meaning. This award and scholarship is presented annually to one martial artist within the AAU Taekwondo program who has attained the rank of 1st dan or above, is between the ages of 15 years and 18 years inclusive, and has demonstrated all three standards of the award. The award requires outstanding accomplishment in competitive Taekwondo, high academic achievement in school, and a deep involvement in community service helping others. These were characteristics of Christopher Canning that were part of his total being. It is these achievements and personal attributes that represent the standards of the award and what it honors. The first two recipients of this prestigious award and the $1,000 scholarships were Kurt Fuhrmann (2002) and Destiny Lieder (2003). Each school, affiliated with the AAU is eligible to submit one student who meets the award standards and eligibility requirements as a candidate for consideration. An application can be submitted in a resume format as long as it includes the basic contact and general information (name, address, phone, birth date, rank, school and any contact information), martial arts achievements, community service involvement, academic standing and letters of reference stipulating to the personality traits such as humility, determination, perseverance, concern for others, etc. These submittals can be made in April and May, but no later than 6/1/03. They are to be sent to Art Canning, 239 N. Wood Street, Maroa, Illinois 61756. Candidates must be eligible for the 2004 AAU nationals, planning on attending, participating in the opening ceremonies, and competing. Now is the time to start evaluating potential students for consideration and help guide them in meeting the standards of the award. The award and its standards require meeting the challenge to excel, the goal is achievable as demonstrated by Chris, Kurt and Destiny. Help one of your students to traverse the path of these two young people, carry on the legacy, and set the example to achieve excellence. *Tournament & Events Schedule May 8, 2004 Region 2 AAU Taekwondo Championship Calvary Gospel Church Gym 11150 Berry Road Waldorf, MD 20603 For Information, Contact Scott Fiorillo 301-934-3699 scott@smtkd.com May 8, 2004 Lake Erie Ohio Championship Streetsboro H.S. 1900 Annalane Dr. Streetsboro, Ohio 44241 www.eteamz.com/sites/leaautkd leaautkd@neo.rr.com May 15, 2004 2004 Arkansas AAU Taekwondo Qualifier Central Jr. High School Gymnasium 2811 West Huntsville Road Springdale, Arkansas 72762 Registration Deadline May 1, 2004 Late Registration with $10 fee until May 7, 2004 Contact Tom Stout/Veral Noland PO Box 647 Springdale, AR 72765 (479) 751-3465 May 15, 2004 2004 Arizona AAU Taekwondo Qualifier Basha High School 5990 S.
