Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Folks: Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone for their support to me and my school here in Seoul. My family and I are leaving here on Monday and moving to the US Military Academy, West Point, New York. I'll be teaching international relations there while continuing to teach hapkido and taekwondo ("Warrior Hapkido", West Point). Mr. Mike Blyzniuk will be running the Warrior Hapkido school for those military folks assigned to Yongsan garrison. His email is on Master West's website (www.hapkido.com) and any military folks coming over here should link up with him. It'll be great to be back in the states but I'll truly miss Korea, which I affectionately call "Land of the Not Quite Right." Thanks again for all your support and I'm looking forward to seeing folks back in the states for max throw down time/mat time. Take care and God bless. At that time I was in the ICHF and my instructor had encouraged me to go see him once I arrived in country. He had changed into a suit and tie and was leaving his dojang when I popped in. I apologized about not making an appointment to come see him and told him I'd come back some other time. He stopped what he was doing, invited me in, we went to his office, drank green tea, and talked about hapkido and life in Korea for about 30 minutes. He was extremely patient with my Korean language skills or lack thereof and it was way cool to talk with a man who has done so much for hapkido. I had never met him before but I was truly moved by his generosity. He is always on the mat teaching and for those of you who've seen him in action, he's a great instructor. His sons are also good people who love the martial arts. Which leads me to Grandmaster Timmerman, who also always makes time for anyone to show them basic or advanced techniques. Sir, it's fantastic you were promoted and it's truly well deserved. In Jackson two years ago you took several folks from Virginia, whom you'd just met that day, into the parking lot at night to break bricks out of the back of your car. I made the mistake to opt out and drink beer that evening instead of doing the brick breaking -- gotta make up for it next year in Jackson. Congrats on the 9th dan and please keep throwing Master Janis on the mat for all of us to watch in Jackson! Pain is just weakness leaving the body, right? (Sorry Kevin!) I also know the anxiety that one feels hoping everything goes well. I would like to extend an personal invitation to all those that were planning on attending this seminar to attend the Grandmaster Ji, Han Jae Seminar next weekend, May 22 & 23, in South Windsor Connecticut. Information on the seminar is on www.hapkidojang.com and you can register online. We have many top quality hapkido people that will be in attendance. (Javier Agasto, Mike Tomlinson, Todd Denniger, Sean Bradley and more. Take advantage of this opportunity to get on the mat with GM Ji and turn this change into an opportunity. If you want certification from the KHF and Master Whalen all you have to do is contact him, set up a time at his convenience, show proper history and time in rank and then go and test with him... I have tested under Master Whalen for many many years... heck I have a yellow belt gup cert signed by him as well as a 3rd dan cert signed by him,,,, and everything in between those two... he has always been fair and will give you what you deserve IF you show up and put up.... I can only imagine why some individuals would chose to go around the proper protocal.... and I won't get into that, I will say that IMHO the biggest problem I personally see in the whole realm of the Hapkido world is that everyone wants to be the chief and no one wants to be the indian!! Let me repeat that so it sinks in to some people... I will say that IMHO the biggest problem I personally see in the whole realm of the Hapkido world is that everyone wants to be the chief and no one wants to be the indian!! I get disgusted when I go somewhere and do Hapkido and everyone is posturing on the edge of the mat showing of their ego and belt...trying to be the chief... and then I go work out with the REAL Chiefs like Doju Nim Ji Han Jae, Master Whalen, J.R. West and several others and they just laugh, joke, workout and have a good time.... I wish all these folks would quit starting orgs.. trying to squeeze a buck out of someone,, pumping up their ego and bank account,, AND JUST BE AN INDIAN!!! What a friggin joke. We are not trying to be the KHF, nor are we actively supporting KHF. We are not the governing body for anything, nor do we wish to be. We make no money from martial art, and each of us that are members are somehow related. Most of us trained together, or trained at a sister school. To date, no one has paid a membership due. We are trying to consolidate our curriculum so that we are truly sister schools, and to that end we are working together to do so, under the guidelines given to us by Master Lim. Currently, we are invitation only, which is not to say that we are elitist, but that you must have a relationship with one of us to even discuss membership. Now with that being said and clarified, it is not logical to assume we are doing anything unethical, nor is it to be assumed that we are trying to supplant anyone. We have no wish to step on anyone's toe. We have simply banded together and choose to work together. I hope this clears the air. Rather than assume anything, it is better to ask. In our goals, save for the more commercial goals, we are very similar to other martial arts organizations. If you wish to attempt to persecute us for simply deciding to work together, what do you think of other organizations such as USCDKA, Master Han's Hapkido Association, Kwan Sik Yung's organization, my TSD master, Pak, Ho Sik's organization? Each of them offers their own rank to their members and we are pretty much the same. The KMAIA tried to claim you were getting Korean rank and affiliation to various Korean bodies. We make no such claim. That alone is a tremendous difference. In short, we are a group of martial artists who are doing the best we can to work together, to do the best we can do for our students. No one can fault us for that. We are in the US Chapter, in a waiting pattern to see what this next round of debate within the KHF will hold. I don't think it should be of any surprise to anyone, as this has kinda been in the works since the beginning of the year, at least. That will be put forth to the membership at an upcoming meeting as will a discussion of our bylaws to determine what they should be. We will also be discussing SOP's to determine what the appropriate course of action will be for KOMA-USA. Technically, I head KOMA-USA; however, we all run it. I'll keep you posted if you'd like as to our status. I practiced in my back yard all my forms and kicks. It helped alot. I still practice some at home, the sit ups and ab strengthning, arm work outs and yes watch dvd s and videos, and read. I also go on a two to four mile climbing, hiking, running excursion every day even on the really cold days. I am lucky to live in the NE where we have lots of mountians and parks. I dont practice outside as much since I can go to my school at any time to workout on my own and will soon (it's looking good!) have my own school. I think ANY practice is GREAT! If your techniques are not being done properly, it is up to your instructor to correct them and as you as student practice the corrections. The more you work out the better condition your body becomes and along comes the dicipline ect....... :) sandy --__--__-- Message: 13 From: PETER.MCDONALDSMITH@london-fire.gov.uk To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Army H2H combat Date: Fri, 14 May 2004 19:09:31 +0100 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net just a quick note to let you all know that a high profile TKD instructor here in the UK has the contract to train the British army recruits. -----Original Message----- From: Patrick Baeder [mailto:baederp@bellsouth.net] Sent: 06 April 2004 12:29 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Army H2H combat There has been much discussion lately regarding the proficiency of our troops hand-to-hand combat skills. Here is a little history regarding the Army Ranger's decision to select Brazilian JJ as their style of H2H. When I was a Ranger qualified infantry officer, I served under LTC Kurt Fuller. LTC Fuller had just come to our battalion after filling the position as executive officer of the 75th Ranger Regiment in Ft. Benning, GA. This is what he had to say about how the decision was made to go with BJJ as their form of H2H combat. Once upon a time, LTC Fuller was sitting around one evening with several of the Ranger Regiment brass, drinking beer and watching the Ultimate Fighting Challenge. All the officers were amazed at Royce Gracie's ability to tap out challengers quickly, without harming them. The officers decided that they need a system of combat would accomplish this. They wanted their soldiers to be able to: (A) Roll around on the match going full force-on-force (B) Someone to win by submission (C) Not have any injuries The benefits of the Army's decision: 1. Soldier's learn and effective fighting style for the ground 2. Soldier's can engage in a style of H2H, full force with fewer injuries 3. Soldier's look forward to unusual and challenging PT (physical training) 4. Soldier's unit cohesion is improved 5. Soldier's develop confidence The drawbacks: 1. BJJ is probably not the best choice in a combat situation where there is more than one opponent 2. BJJ is probably not the best choice in a situation where knifes or other weapons are introduced 3. Soldier's may be receiving a false sense of H2H combat effectiveness There are obvious deficiencies in the BJJ H2H combat system that the Army has chosen and many Rangers and Army troops are aware of that. But LTC Fuller told me, "This is not to make the soldier in to a badass...it is to make him think he is a badass." The BJJ system of H2H is great for unit's confidence and cohesion. That is the real reason for the decision.
