And I like his version of Hapki-Hoshinsul, it is one of the most effective I've come across. The GM Lim I know do not award dans easily, in fact, compared to my previous martial art experiences, he is one of the most demanding. Just asked those who have taken his dan gradings if you want to be sure. Before giving your comments, the least you should do is get to know him and check out his Hapkido ability first. I do not believe it is fair to judge negatively someone you have never met or trained with. Yes, GM Lim had an unfortunate involvement with KMAIA, but hey, how the hell we in Malaysia knew what's happening in US. As far as we are concern, it's just an invitation from a fellow KHF member to join his organization. Although, like some of the list members, it was a decision that is very much regretted. At least, give KOMA-USA a chance and try to get to know them better, if you do detect any wrongdoings or frauds, then you are very much welcome to expose them on this list. Sincerely, S. H. Look for a great Hapkido teacher. There are many organizations out there. Visit the various different schools and make a couple of visits to the classes. An organization can be great, but a teacher within not so great and vica-versa. Good luck in your quest for a quality teacher. Those who really want to learn hapkido, will find a good teacher and the organization will be a by-product. As many know the Sung Moo Kwan was Gm Ji's kwan in Korea and many of the big names in HKD were Sung Moo Kwan. However, this Sung Moo Kwan is NOT the Sung Moo Kwan that is claimed by the KOMA group, even tho that is the impression one receives from KOMA. The following is the KHF's clarification: ========================================================================== Yes, Julian got recognition certificates as he claims several months ago. However, his Sung Moo Kwan is different from that of GM Ji. It sounds same, but the meaning is different. As you know, in Korean there are lots of homonyms. I know it gives lots of confusion to Western people. Julian also knows that, as he understands Chinese characters. .... ========================================================================== Caveat Emptor Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 7 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: mccarty@hapkidojang.com Date: Thu, 20 May 2004 09:17:31 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Last Call for GM Ji Seminar Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In less then two days Grandmaster Ji, Han Jae will be conducting a seminar in South Windsor, Connecticut. The one I am referring to is where the right fist meets the left palm at center body and the left fingers either fold or stay erect. What style uses that and where is it appropriate and inappropriate?...." The salute that you mention has had a few interpretations over the years but just about all of them come back to the Chinese arts. The most common origin seems to be that of a recognition sign among pro-Ming groups. The story was that the intention was so that groups unknown to each other, when meeting, would not fall to fighting one another but recognize that they are all anti-Ching in their sentiments. Another more modern take is that this gesture seems to bespeak "balance" (Um-Yang) and is a pleasant way to begin a drill or form. Personally I don't use it unless it is a proven part of the form.
