I applaud your polish and restraint in expressing yourself as, for myself, I have pretty much had a gut-full of the current crop of "double-speak" in the Hapkido community. Rather than go into a rant on some of my most recent experiences let me only state the following and keep it short and "sweet". There is no denying that the Korean culture proceeds from very different roots than our US culture, and I won't pretend that there are ample opportunities for misinterpretation and misunderstanding. Where I draw the line is in the case you mentioned Re: J. Lim and his recent resurrection of the Song Moo Kwan. Its bad enough that we have leadership (both East and West) exploiting nuances in culture and language for their own gain. It gets worse when they exploit other peoples ignorance of these nuances to amplify their progress. To invoke the Kwan system as part and parcel of some commercial enterprise, AND invoke a reputable albeit quiescent Kwan AND to do this in opposition to the original director of that kwan smacks of misrepresentation bordering on fraud. I have no objection to KOMA and the origination of yet ONE MORE Hapkido organization. You just can't have TOO MANY Hapkido organizations, I guess. But lets quit pretending that having a "kwan" recognized by a Korean organization, with pretty paper signed by some notable, using Korean terminology and invoking some overtones of identification with militant agencies authenticates whatever someone wants to patch together. I think you are right on the money with your post. I have no personal axe to grind with Julian, myself, at least not until he starts playing fast and loose with various affiliations. When we have Malaysian leadership, sanctioning rank and standing in the US with the blessing of Korean organizations somebody needs to stop for a moment and start scratching their head, yes? If anyone has prior experience using Mamboserver please contact me offline. I'd like to pick your brain a bit. Thanks.
