I have called Senator Clary's office (who was on one of the committees that reviewed the bill). The aide told me to fax our rules to her and the committee lawyers will review it and write a letter stating it is or isn't affected by this new law. She called the committee lawyers explaining our rules and said it didn't appear we would be affected. So that letter would be real beneficial in case someone asks. I'll let you know what they say when I get the letter. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Thank you Rudy: In the late 70's in Houston it was common for the Korean nationals to issue a Federation/Association dan certificate from Korea, and one from them, your actual teacher, it was called a dojang dan certificate. That is the certificates I displayed because that showed who my teacher was. EACH of the 4 hapkido teachers I have studied under in the past 30 years have been a MAJOR influence on my technique, not the organization, in these days, when time in rank is not as important as it should be (sometimes), some of the Federation/Association certificates hold little credibility. Jere R. Hilland www.rrhapkido.com www.HapkidoSelfDefense.com Jere writes: > Those who really want to learn hapkido, will find a good teacher and the organization will be a by-product. Do not look > for a good organization, look for a good teacher, it does not matter what your rank is - we are ALL students. That is about the best way I have seen it said. Way to go Jere:) I might add that certification is best when it comes the same route... after you have been with the teacher for the length of time it normally should take. Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "J R Hilland" To: Date: Sat, 22 May 2004 21:48:49 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] time and training in rank Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net When I first arrived in Fargo a few months ago, I went to visit a 4th dan in taekwondo who advertised a hapkido chodan. She told me she only took a one-week seminar in hapkido, in Korea, and received a hapkido chodan. She then referred me to her teacher who claims he is a triple master and a 14th dan (I am not making this up) because he has a 6 dan and 2, 4th dan. He obtained his hapkido 4th dan from just seminars in Korea. They even try to teach hapkido, not sure what it would be though. I finally met a real group of MA in Fargo, the Red River Taekwondo and Red River Hapkido clubs and naturally I started the Red River Hapkido Dojang. Further back in time... When I first graduated from Texas A&M University in the 80's, I was employed in a small town in SE Texas and looking for a dojang to teach hapkido at. The big school in town was run by a very talented kick boxer who said that he had a hapkido teacher in his dojang. I receiving permissions to attend, but when I arrived for class the hapkido teacher locked himself in the office, and then just before class started, admitted to me that he was a self defense instructor at the police department and only called what he did hapkido as he once attend a hapkido seminar. But claimed no rank. He locked himself back in his office and I taught a traditional hapkido class. It is not uncommon in Korea for a higher dan in one art with a well known organization to receive a dan rank from another art in an organization to give them status. I saw this done several times in the 80's. It is just not with taekwondo and hapkido. Just a few observations.... Jere R.
