I think people wonder sometimes where my attitude comes from without understanding repeatedly facing this sort of corruption of the Hapkido arts on a near-regular basis. After a few years of witnessing the hi-jinx committed in the name of Hapkido, understanding, compassion, reason and objectivity sorta go out the window and leave frustration and anger behind to deal with the situation. The reasons for this decision are clear. With Master Bae, Sung Book resigning as Director of the KHF there will be no official movement with the KHF office for international growth. Without him or his plans, I will have no authority, influence or responsibility to help the international members of the KHF. Over the past several months Master Bae, Sung Book¡¯s efforts to create an international organization for the KHF have been repeatedly blocked by a few influential people in the KHF. The situation has become so intense and hostile, that Master Bae will be resigning as director of the KHF once President Oh has returned from attending his son¡¯s graduation from university. The current problems resulting from this include several international masters, instructors, and students not receiving their black belt certificates. I have seen firsthand how Master Bae¡¯s attempts to have these certificates issued and mailed out have been foiled by those opposing his leadership direction. At nearly every meeting with Master Bae I have inquired about the certificates and when they will be issued, but his hands have been tied. For many months my main concern has been to those certificates issued to the people who have gone through the proper procedures, been approved by President Oh, sent their monies, and then denied at the last minute by those who actually issue the certificates. However, what little influence I had has failed miserably. I cannot tell you how ashamed I am to tell you this. Many people have put their trust in the KHF, Master Bae, and me (something he and I hold scared), and they have patiently waited, sometimes for many months, without result. I cannot emphasize how terrible Master Bae and I feel about this. If you have sent money to the KHF for certificates, please contact the KHF office directly to either have them refund your money or send your certificate. Master Bae is no longer in the KHF office and therefore he (and I) cannot help in this matter. You may contact the KHF office by calling 82-2-3437-3530. I should state that the KHF is not opposed to international members joining the organization. However, there is no immediate organizational level plan that I am aware of to aid those who wish to join. There are, however, three kwans (Hapkido styles) within the KHF that are actively helping non-Koreans. These groups are the DukMooKwan, JinJungKwan, and the UlJiKwan. The latter is the kwan to which Master Bae, Master Fabian Duque, Master Stuart Rosenburg, and I belong. I will post more information about this later. Finally, I would like to state why I remain with the Korea Hapkido Federation. Even though the KHF seems to be in a very dark place, I have met many talented, caring and giving individuals in the KHF whom I respect and trust. Some of these individuals include Master Kim, Nam-Je, Master Chae, In Kil, Master Master Bae, Sung Book, Master Kim, Bum Chul, Master Choi, Suk Hwan, Master Kim, Bo Hyung, Master Harold Whalen, Master Holcombe Thomas, Master Fabian Duque, and many, many more. These strong relationships are worth are worth staying in the KHF for. This is because no matter where I walk, I can call these Hapkido-in my friends and teachers, and there is no better honor I could be given. Sincerely, John A. I have never known him to be rude with anyone, to include Mr. Hackworth. The SMK name was turned over to him by Hwang Duk Kyu. It was recognized by KHF, four (?) years ago. I am also wondering exactly who in KHF indicated that the SMK name was not the original because I myself spoke with Master Bae, who indicated that Master Lim had full authority to issue SMK rank, and that said rank is considered by KHF to be a valid Kwan rank; however, for official KHF rank, one had to go through appropriate channels. The note posted by Mr. Terry features grammar very different from Master Bae's. At any rate, Master Lim's certificates are posted for all to see. An interesting thing here that I have noticed is that people who are having a problem with his actions are not themselves members of KHF. Has anyone bothered to ask Hwang Duk Kyu why he saw fit to pass on the name to Master Lim, instead of calling Master Lim a liar? Since he is the one who did it, does that not seem like a logical step? Sounds like you misunderstood him then, as you read his email clearly indicating otherwise. Perhaps Julian was mislead. Perhaps someone misunderstood. But bottom line... registering or attempting to register the name of Gm Ji's old kwan without his approval is NOT an honorable thing to do.
