Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Well I am back from the great time I had at Master Mike McCarty's Dojang in Hartford. Man it was awesome, to all of you that missed it all I can say is too bad that just meant more Gal Bi and sushi for me at the best Korean Restaurant on this planet! I met quite a few new faces and a lot of old friends and the Hapkido brotherhood is alive and well my friends. We had an awesome time learning from Doju Nim and enjoying the FANTASTIC hospitality of Master McCarty and his students. Mike has a good group of loyal hard falling guys who can eat as much as me and actually enjoy some good old down home Hapkido tapping pain. Man I can't say enough of how refreshing it is to be with a group of people who leave the BS at the door and just have fun doing Hapkido and listening and learning from the most unbelievable Hapkido Master you have ever seen on the mat. It is utterly amazing to see Doju Nim Ji move and do techniques, and then listening to his stories and philosophies and jokes is PRICELESS. First of all let me apologize for my spelling, my fingers are just a little sore and swollen from Doju Nim Ji's use of me as a point of showing that big guys can be made to yell and tap and flop around on the mat!! I worked out with some great Hapkidoists such as: Chris LaClava who is actually as crazy and (Hapkido Silly) as me, Javier Agosto who is a great old friend, Todd Denlinger from Colorado who is a great Hapkidoist and representative of Doju Nim, Sean Bradley from Seattle who is an awesome technician, who is helping preserve and document Doju Nim's teaching the right way with much respect and no greed!! And many many more....of which the names I can't remember because they were beaten and thrown out of my memory bank by Doju Nim Ji and Master Mike McCarty!! To all of you that were there let me say thank you and I had a GREAT time hanging out with you all. To Master McCarty: you are a great Hapkido player, an awesome technician and a true friend, thank you for everything..... HAP KI!!!!!!!!!!! But in 1991 when I went independent, I issued only dojang dan/gup certificates. I never thought I would have another teacher or an affiliation with another organization. I had no experience then with the non-Korean nationals in the hapkido community. Years later an old friend in the KMA told me about Master West and I found out that there are hapkidoin who are as good as, if not better than, the Koran nationals in hapkido. But I guess that is also true with any art. Jere R. I haven't watched it yet, but I saw from the news that a couple of Koreans competed in Pride's Bushido 3. Choi, Mu Bae got his second Pride win with a judge's decision over Yoshihisa Yamamoto. Kim, Jin Oh lost his debut against Shamoji Fujii. Kim lost by choke. I hold Dan in TKD (wtf) and Kuk Sool Won and am willing to entertain any style remotely similar to those two. (Hapkido, TKD of any style, Karate, Tang Soo Do, for example). My needs are simple: an clean, open place to work out, an accepting instructor, and the promise of good, hard workouts. Due time constraints imposed by my work situation there is a limit in how far I can travel to/from the school. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Hwang Duk Kyu passed the name to Master Lim, and from my understanding he spoke with Master Ji about it, after it had already been passed on. I can understand how that would have happened, if indeed it was the case. From what I gather, that is not the case however. At any rate, Master Ji's objection, I believe would have had some impact in Korea, and considering it was registered, I don't think there was much issue at the time. It would seem to me that the question should still go back to Hwang Duk Kyu. f. --__--__-- Message: 9 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] SMK-Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 24 May 2004 18:29:34 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > At any rate, Master Ji's objection, I believe would have had some impact in > Korea, and considering it was registered, I don't think there was much issue > at the time. As we have heard from Master Bae, Gm Ji's original kwan name was apparently not the name registered by Julian. It was a different name, but one that romanized to SMK. > It would seem to me that the question should still go back to Hwang Duk Kyu. I've discussed this at length with Julian. That name has never come up in our SMK discussions... but if Hwang Duk Kyu owned the rights to the name of Gm Ji's kwan why was Julian negotiating with Gm Ji for rights to the SMK name? Doesn't smell right to me.
