I teach groups ranging of skill and age level. Stuff to keep the class upbeat and exciting, u know? Hello, again.... Here are a few things I use while studying poomse/kata : mark your beginning point on the floor and see if you can get close without using your eyes. try it blindfolded. break the poomse into applications and use the applications against partners while studying its fun to set up 2 or 3 attackers against the person performing the form and demonstrate the applications within the form as it is performed. ask the students " who knows their /Poomse/form and can perform it without one mistake? " there is always someone....lol. Ask them to attempt the form backwards.....shows how well they really know it...lol I have partners work on talking someone step by step backwards through the poomse. Once in a while I will put on some upbeat music, and call out students one by one to perform their favorite form or make up a 10 movement form that includes certain techniques that I think that particular student needs to work on. if johnny needs front kicks and high blocks, then johnnys form should include those elements. A team contest on who can perform the best form, synchronized together. and the losing team has to perform a team pushup..(hope you know what a team push up is) Note: team push up performed by lining up in a single file line, everyone assumes push up position then goes to belly down position, the first person in line puts his shins on the shoulders of the second, and so on, all the way to the end. that is called team push up position, of course everyone tries to do a push up together lifting their team while performing the team push up. I also have contests performing a team push the quickest. it gets really exciting, finding out who can get organized the fastest. I have tournament flash style score cards made up, I have a panel of my advanced colored belts set on a judging panel and score each students best form performance. We talk about what a judge looks for, and how to score the performer. the winners of the contest get a certificate for the best form for the month of ...... of course this is a monthly event at our school. everyone really practices hard on their forms to get the forms certificate of the month. These are a few of my favorite study methods.....be creative dont be afraid to try something new.... you can come up with some by just thinking of what you want to accomplish with the drill. have a panel of your advanced colored belts come up with a drill,,,, you give them the outline on what your trying to accomplish and give them homework on making a drill or game that teach these concepts... it always works for me.... Its an important skill to learn how to come up with drills, so give homework and let them come up with some.... The comments generally revolved around the decision to eliminate head kicks in total, a move that was felt by many to be too dramatic although almost everyone agreed that safety for athletes in their prime physiological developmental years should be of ultimate importance. The USTU Governance and Management Committee met in special session on Wednesday, May 26th to continue to discuss the ramifications of the ruling. After further consideration, the committee expressed agreement with many of the membership concerns that the ruling was too dramatic, and passed an alternate resolution. The rule will allow time for USTU's CEO/Secretary General Bob Gambardella to form a task force composed of a variety of experts from the Taekwondo community. The task force mission will be to formulate proposed policies concerning safety for all levels of practicing Taekwondo athletes including but not limited to the development of safety equipment and the development of a passport system (a system designed to prohibit athletes from competing for certain time frames after receiving a serious head strike in competition; this is a system similar to a passport system established within USA Boxing several years ago). The rule as passed by the committee is: Twelve and thirteen year old athletes holding any color belt will compete under the junior safety rules Junior Safety Rules, Article 1B:2a: "The competitor is allowed to kick to the facial area; however, the kick must be light contact with absolute control without causing an injury or excessive contact, or the appropriate penalty shall be invoked." This new rule takes effect immediately in all USTU sanctioned events, including the Jr. Olympics scheduled for June 30 - July 6, 2004 in Atlanta, GA. --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Sun, 30 May 2004 13:57:44 -0400 From: Rudy Timmerman To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Glad to hear you are better.
