What is with these people? Oh well, it's just like mama always says...some people would rather climb a tree and tell a lie, than stand on the ground and tell the truth. What in the world does Yudo (Judo) have to do with Hapkido? Is Chung Tong a Yudo kwan or a Hapkido kwan? And if it's a Yudo kwan, then who cares if it's recognized by a bunch of Hapkido people? And if it's a Hapkido kwan, why are they calling it Yudo? And what does "recognition" really mean? I'm guessing that means the check cleared. <<>> I damn near spit my soda all over the monitor when I read that. Hello!?!?!? There are still people out there making claims about the KMAIA? Lord help 'em...if they can't come up with new lies they'll just dredge something up from the archives. Beats anything I've ever seen. <<>> OK...that time I really DID spit my soda all over the monitor. Unbelievable. The site he is referring to is still quite active... Even though some individuals tried to keep people from using by placing an "under construction" message on the normal main page. Check the site out, if anyone wants to make a comment please do so since it very apparent that a few KHF people are trying to keep people from speaking out about what is going on in the KHF. The site can be accessed through http://hapkidokorea.org/english/user_bbs.php Regarding the two Kwans issue... Hae Mu Kwan was/ is Richards Kwan, from what I understand it is no longer recognized by the KHF and has not been recognized since Master Bae and Oh Se Lim revoked Mr. Hackworth's rank. The other kwan was Chung Tong Kwan Yudo, which is a Yudo kwan run by Joseph Connolly. Why the KHF would recognize a Yudo kwan I have no idea, but they have. I don't know Mr. Connolly from a hole in the wall but from what I know the KHF does recognize his kwan in some capacity (official/honorary/reciprocal???) so I don't know how anything the KHF or Master Bae did had any impact on him at any level. I do know from various websites that Mr. Connolly purports to teach the original fighting art established by Kano, Jigoro Sensei and wants to keep Judo/Yudo in its original form as opposed to the 'watered down" game that we see too often today. If that is true... Great for him. I would agree that that is a great undertaking and I wish him luck. The rest of the KHF information provided by Mr. Hackworth is complete crap. Kevin F. It comes from one of the multitude of new orgs from down Florida way. Amazing, simply amazing what some will claim... :( June 8, 2004 1. A Turbulent Time for the Military Arts in Korea The last six months have seen a great deal of turbulence in the traditional Korean military arts in Korea. When this began, we decided that it was more important that we provide accurate information than timely information, most of which turned out to be incorrect at the end of the day. We now believe that we have enough accurate information to begin sending newsletters once again. 2. New International Hapkido Organization Formed When Ji Han Jae was arrested and put into jail for investigation in relation to the assassination of the President of the Republic of Korea, his governmental duties were assumed by Oh Se Lim who also succeeded Ji as the President of the Korea Hapkido Association. The circumstances of that succession also necessitated a change in the name of the organization, from the Korea Hapkido Association to the Korea Hapkido Federation. In December 2003, as Oh Se Lim retired from government service, he once again undertook a change in the name of the organization, as well as a change in the nature of the organization. He changed the organization into a private corporation and changed the name from Korea Hapkido Federation to Korea Hapkido International Federation. Mister Bae Sung Book, President Oh's appointed Director of this new organization initiated a website, with separate English and Korean pages. On the English-language side, he announced that the new organization no longer recognized the organization's own kwons. A similar notice was not posted on the Korean language side. This announcement is analogous to the assertions made by the Korean-expatriates in the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU) that the kwons of the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA) had been disbanded and even that the KTA itself had been disbanded, supposedly having been absorbed into the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). This falsehood was one of the contributing factors in the major scandal at Kukkiwon, the Taekwondo sports complex of the Korean Amateur Sports Association, which resulted in several Kukkiwon officials going to jail, and tens of thousands of bogus Kukkiwon rank certificates reportedly still floating around the sports Taekwondo community, especially in the United States. The only two Hapkido kwons to actually be affected by the adverse information posted on this website were the two international kwons created under the leadership GrandMaster Lee Jae Whan. They are also the only two Hapkido kwons not headed by ethnic Koreans. One of those kwons is Chung Tong Kwan Yudo. The name of the founding GrandMaster of Chung Tong Kwan Yudo. was also not posted on the purported list of senior non-Korean dans. This despite the founding GrandMaster's position as one of the most senior non-Korean dan rank holders in the organization. To make matters even worse, individuals who had previously denied appointments and promotions in the organization were now listed as senior dan rank holders and appointed to senior positions. As of last week, Mister Bae had submitted his resignation as the Director of the Korea Hapkido International Federation. A resignation which had been requested and which was immediately accepted. We are advised that he is become the Secretary-General of Ji Do Kwan Taekwondo, but that has not been confirmed to our knowledge. The English language website has been shut down. As of this week, we are informed that that Chung Tong Kwan Yudo. remains a valid prior to the announcements posted on the now defunct webpage. 3. New Governing Body for Hapkido in Korea Hapkido is the military art of the military and law enforcement special operations units of the Republic of Korea, including the Presidential Protective Service. It was with some concern, therefore, that Korean government officials observed the activities of the Korean Hapkido International Federation over the past six months. Among other things, the appointments and promotions announced on the organization's English-language website violate the standards established by the Korean Martial Arts Instructors Association. In consequence of this, the President of the Republic of Korea authorized the creation of a new Hapkido organization under the name of the Korea Hapkido Federation, which became vacant when Oh Se Lim changed the name and nature of the organization formerly known by that name. Upon the creation of this new Korea Hapkido Federation, it was recognized as the new governing body for the military art of Hapkido in Korea. To our understanding, the government of Korea thereupon canceled it contracts with the former governing body and transferred them to the new organization. The government also, to our understanding, no longer accepts the rank certificates issued by the former Korea Hapkido Federation. It should be noted, for example, that admission to the National Police Academy requires submission of a dan rank certificate from either the Korea Taekwondo Association of the Korea Hapkido Federation. Only Hapkido certificates issued by Park Kum Shil, President of the new Korea Hapkido Federation, are acceptable for official government purposes, according to our information. Park Kum Shil is, by the way, a board member of the KMAIA. This organization, very influential in Korea, is almost unknown outside Korea, even to expatriate Koreans. Chung Tong Kwan Yudo. is proud to be a member of this standard-setting organization for the traditional Korean military arts. 4. World Taekwondo Federation President Goes to Prison Kim Un Yong, the suspended Vice President of the International Olympic Committee, has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison by a Seoul court. The sentence was much less than the seven years requested by prosecutors. Records show that Kim embezzled at least 3.3 billion won in public funds and took 788 million won in bribes while he headed international sports organizations such as the World Taekwondo Federation, Kukkiwon, and the General Association of International Sports Federations. He took an additional 810 million won in bribes from 1997 through 2002 from South Korean sporting goods companies, while serving as the head of the Korean Olympic Committee. The millions that Kim scammed from sport Taekwondo practitioners worldwide, by requiring Kukkiwon rank in order to participate in WTF tournaments, was never included in the charges against Kim. _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list, 1600 members The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2004: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 10 Jun 2004 15:25:32 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Author Author Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > I'm assuming this is Connelly that we're talking about? I've lived in Korea doing martial arts for almost seven years and I have never heard of it. When Ray asked me to find out about it a few years ago I asked instructors in two kinds of gumdo, three associations of hapkido, taekwondo, and yudo. No one had ever heard of such a group. I was left to decide between the following options: If it exists, it exists with no members *or* this organization is *so* unheard of outside of Korea that in the traditional rush to outdo other countries and be number one, the Koreans themselves have all decided to have never heard of it either. ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Thu, 10 Jun 2004 18:52:49 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Confucianism and Women in late Choson Korea Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Forwarding... Call For Papers Original essays are invited for a collection [tentatively] entitled Confucianism and Women in late Choson Korea. This volume will explore the relationship of women's history and Confucianism in the late Choson period from a variety of perspectives. This volume of scholarly essays will contain relevant, recent studies in English and new Korean scholarship translated into English. The editors wish to update and expand current analysis of women's studies and Confucianism drawing upon the disciplines of history, literature, sociology, philosophy, art history, and anthropology. Proposals for translations and original research will be considered. This project is predicated on considering Choson society on its own terms without resorting to a narrow, judgmental application of contemporary standards. A balanced and historically sensitive analysis is essential. Second, the term "Confucianism" should be carefully defined within the essay. Third, the scope of analysis for this project encompasses such groups of women as (no)bi, female philosophers, female literati, etc. The editors welcome especially essays which utilize (newly available) historical sources and thus empirically support the conclusions. The collection will be published as a book at a major academic press. Send an abstract of 500 words to Youngmin Kim (y2kim@brynmawr.edu) by September 1, 2004.
