It was with some concern, therefore, that Korean government officials observed the activities of the Korean Hapkido International Federation over the past six months. Among other things, the appointments and promotions announced on the organization's English-language website violate the standards established by the Korean Martial Arts Instructors Association. In consequence of this, the President of the Republic of Korea authorized the creation of a new Hapkido organization under the name of the Korea Hapkido Federation, which became vacant when Oh Se Lim changed the name and nature of the organization formerly known by that name. Upon the creation of this new Korea Hapkido Federation, it was recognized as the new governing body for the military art of Hapkido in Korea. To our understanding, the government of Korea thereupon canceled it contracts with the former governing body and transferred them to the new organization. The government also, to our understanding, no longer accepts the rank certificates issued by the former Korea Hapkido Federation. It should be noted, for example, that admission to the National Police Academy requires submission of a dan rank certificate from either the Korea Taekwondo Association of the Korea Hapkido Federation. Only Hapkido certificates issued by Park Kum Shil, President of the new Korea Hapkido Federation, are acceptable for official government purposes, according to our information. I could say much about the entire post, but I'll just leave it at this. The above is absolutely false, so I don't know what "to our understanding" and "according to our information" is supposed to mean other than the information is false, not true, BS, and whatever else you want to call it. Whoever wrote this and whoever is distributing this as fact is wrong. Park Kum Shil is the president of the Hanguk Hapkido Yongmeng. This organization was started in 2001, just look at the web site copyright. I was writing about this organization a year ago, way before anyone in Florida knew about the organization, cared about the organization or contacted the organization. This organization is one on a number of organizations recognized by the Korean government. And the number keeps increasing. The government involvement is not as the above statement would make people believe. I don't want to spend any more time with this, but do want people to know the truth, and the truth is the above statment is FALSE. "We are on the frontline of spreading Taekwondo throughout the world," a university spokesman said. Since the reorganization of curriculum in 1999, officials of the College of Taekwondo have been working hard to produce Taekwondo professionals who would take a leading role in Taekwondo education overseas, he said. To that end, the curriculum of the College of Taekwondo is not limited to improving the students' Taekwondo skills and knowledge but also includes language education and study abroad programs, he added. The College of Taekwondo was founded in 1983 to establish the study of Taekwondo in Korea, which was unprecedented for a four-year college. The establishment of the College of Taekwondo later encouraged another five universities to have Taekwondo colleges by 1999, the spokesman said. Since the first graduate class in 1987, the College of Taekwondo now has more than 600 alumni, among whom are the members of the Korean Taekwondo Demonstration Team, who travel abroad to promote Taekwondo. "The Alumni are actively involved in various areas involving Taekwondo both inside and outside Korea," the spokesman said. Since 1989, the College of Taekwondo and the Korea Taekwondo Association have jointly organized national Taekwondo matches for high school students, where nearly 8,000 students have so far participated. Entering in 1998, the College of Taekwondo expanded to offer evening classes to 60 students. Taekwondo is a Korean traditional martial art whose history dates back to 5,000 years ago. It began as a defense martial art called "Subak" or "Taekkyon," and has developed its distinct style over the course of history. Unlike other martial arts, Taekwondo focuses on teaching not only fighting skills but also a discipline to enhance people's spirit and mind as its name indicates _ Tae means foot, Kwon means fist and Do means discipline. It's common for Koreans to learn Taekwondo at an early age, and Taekwondo became a sport as it was introduced at domestic and international sports events. Taekwondo has become an official Olympic sport at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. "Students of the College of Taekwondo are taught to be true martial artists. But they also get familiar with Taekwondo as a sport and they learn how to teach Taekwondo to a wide variety of people from children to adults," a spokesman of the College of Taekwondo said. 06-10-2004 19:15 --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Stovall, Craig" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] new news from the GM wannabes from down FLA Date: Fri, 11 Jun 2004 09:22:21 -0500 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> I would agree that one could do much worse in this life than to practice and promote the original art developed by Kano (pre-WWII Judo). I would only point out that Kano was more interested in using the martial arts as a means to spread certain humanist ideals as opposed to developing a true fighting art. The efficacy of Judo as a fighting method was just a nice side effect of their technical innovation in regard to specific techniques as well as choice of training modalities (randori, specifically). When I see people like Connelly, and all of these lies that have been spread over the last few years...I see very little of Kano's spirit or ideals. I see no balance, I see no efficiency, and I certainly don't see the effort to create learning environments that uphold Kano's most important ideal...the principle of mutual welfare and benefit. I would also remind these people that all of this is built upon a program of PHYSICAL education. By all evidence, this man does not uphold that ideal either. When I see these kinds of things that are being promoted under the banner of "Yudo" or "Combat Judo", I always get a funny feeling. You often hear these people harkening back to "what Kano really wanted", but in the end the easiest way to follow Kano is to put on a white belt and follow the traditional curriculums that are still upheld by the Kodokan to this very day. Otherwise, I just get the sense that we're seeing a small fish who's just trying to create a very small pond to splash around in. For what its worth... I have never gone into this much, but... As indicated above, I did ask a dozen or so Korean martial artists and KMA instructors, in and out of Korea if they had ever heard of this org, or were a member of it, or knew anyone that was a member of it. To avoid confusion I faxed to Korea and elsewhere the original letterheard from said group as KMAIA is a very generic name. Then I sat back and waited for ALL the responses to come back in. That took several months. The result... no one, not a single person had ever heard of this group. No one was a member of it. No one knew anyone that was a member of it. And as we now know, the former "Korean President" of it has stated that it never existed in Korea, only in the USA. Or more accurately, only in Florida... It's amazing how much more is out there even after all that you have learned. For me it was the ending of a cycle which had now begun again.
