We had a terrific turn out of about 60 people and I think everyone had fun and learned some very interesting variations on basic motion. We had folks come from as far away as Aurora, CO just to spends a day getting slammed on the mat. That is surely a tribute to their tenacity and effort in learning. Dan And Dante, thank you. We will be trying to make this at least an annual event, so if you want to come down this way and enjoy some sea side training, ya'll come!! Master West, once again, Thanks for everything, Rich --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "hapkido" To: Date: Sun, 13 Jun 2004 15:53:49 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Hapkido in Buffalo Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Does anyone know any HKD dojangs in Buffalo, NY? One of my students will be moving there this summer. The festival, which has come to represent one of the most colorful regional festivities, is part of the eastern province's efforts add a more international feel to its cultural scene. Koreans have traditionally celebrated the beginning of summer with the Dano Festival. The event takes its name Dano from a traditional holiday which falls on the 5th day of the fifth lunar month which the eastern Gangwon Province has come to host annually for many years. This year, Gangwon is giving it more of an international flair by inviting traditional performers from 22 countries around the world. "Although we can't visit these countries all at once, we can learn about their culture through these performances. The event offers good cultural education for our children." The festival's organizing committee is trying to get Dano Festival on UNESCO's Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible of Humanity list. "We look forward to inviting a greater number of tourists, especially with the implementation of the five-day workweek system." an official with the committee said. The demand for tourism from both at home and abroad has shot up over the past few years from 270 million going on local tours in 1999 to 320 million in 2001. These numbers are expected to expand to 500 million by 2005. "The key to hosting a successful festival for a province is to showcase its own characteristics." the official said. The Dano Festival reflects the ongoing trend among local provinces to turn its cultural heritage into a lucrative source of revenue. He also said, "The federation is currently experiencing disharmony between members because of its untransparent financial system and ineffective operation. I will take this crisis as an opportunity to leap forward once again." A part of that effort is to raise funds for countries where Taekwondo is not a popular sport. Choue said that he plans to raise US$500,000 this year and another US$2 million in the future to help members with financial difficulties. The most urgent task for Choue is to have Taekwondo take a firm root as an official game in the Olympics. To this end, he has already started to make international efforts. Last May, he went to Lausanne, Switzerland to meet with IOC Chairman Jacques Rogge, who is his alumnus at Louvain University in Belgium. He also showed his intention to increase Taekwondo's popularity across the world and develop Taekowndo academically by holding international Taekwondo conferences. Choue established a Taekowndo Department at Kyung Hee University in 1983 for the first time in the world. Not only that, but to globalize Taekwondo, he opened the International Taekwondo Academy (ITA) at the university in 1995, where 500 people including foreigners have completed Taekwondo course so far. He has served as president of the ITA since then, including while he was the president of the university from 1996 to 2003.
