We are having a family reunion that weekend or I'd be there. With our school being about six-eight hours north west, we may be the perfect stopping point while heading that way. Please let me know if you would like to stop and by and workout in our school. Lee, also called his the M.T.A., before switching it to the A.T.A. What weirds me out about it is the animal worship, and the spirit channeling wherein the practitioner in the higher levels is actually said to 'channel' the spirit of a jaguar or jungle-cat while they fight. Practitioners of Silat also are urged to build up their neck muscles and eventually to attack with the mouth like a jungle cat would.>>> In the interests of fair and balanced reporting... Saying "Silat" is a lot like saying "Karate" in the sense that there's a lot of different stuff that goes on under that umbrella. One only has to look at Draeger's work to see the side variety of practices that express themselves under the name of Silat. In truth, there are more than a few practitioners that use the physical movements of Silat more as an expression of folk dance as opposed to a fighting art. This dance is often embedded into the animist religious ceremonies and practices that survive to this day. This form has very little to do with the combat applications (despite what some prominent instructors would have you believe), and is probably what your friend has seen and is referring to. Many (if not most) Silat practitioners who concentrate on the fighting art expression have very little to do with these auto-hypnotic rituals. To put the shoe on the other foot for a moment, I imagine the Kuji-in (hand signs) rituals of traditional Ninjutsu look pretty weird to most outsiders. When judged through a Western cultural bias, it would probably come through the wringer having been dismissed as "spell casting". Agreed? I was a member back then. That may be, Hang Un Lee would have used the name in the 60's, I believe in the 70's he had moved on to form the ATA. But I am rather confident in my memory that he used the name Midwest Tae Kwon Do Assn. back in the 60's - the patch he used was MTA and he simply changed the design by removing the "M" and replacing it with an "A". > He advertised > through the MA magazines at that time. However, I knew H.U. Lee back in the 60's he would come to my home with some of the other Koreans when they were in town for a tournament. These pertain mainly to basic angling, meditation, and common sense approaches to certain problems.. But IMHO overall I believe the art to be mostly a waste of time. The knife techniques in no way shape or form even come close to Phillipino martial arts...period. Last time I was at the Bujinkan in Dayton the head instructor was teaching a low inside crescent kick and then a leg stomp to disarm a knife,,, sure thing bro!! There are way too many people in the art that like to write and say things like was just posted and hang there coat on the "fact" that the art is old and serious.. in reality most of them couldn't fight their way out of a McDonalds Happy Meal and got into the art because they saw a Sho Kosugi movie. Back in the 80's it was unbelievable how many actually "thought" they were trained killers because they bought a kusarigama and a black uniform... at Hayes old Dojo in Dayton these dudes would join all the time. quite a different feeling around these types than when I studied Judo and Korean Karate at Y.J. Chungs in Dayton back in 1969, we had several Vietnam Marine Vets get out of the service and come in and train,, now these guys were trained killers for real and you could tell it,, they would also beat the crap out of you in class,, all in "good fun" mind you. but I went out of my way not to make them mad because that was not a pretty sight when that happened.... some assistant instructors at the Bujinkan would also explain that since Ninjutsu wasn't bound to any one dogma it was much more dangerous and real deal?? Uh nope, actually I found it to be the opposite, there was a lot of confusion and the curriculum was jumbled and the basic movements were a joke at best. A LOT of theory and too basic of movements.. the comment about "ripping" someones arm loose and seperating it was something I heard a lot when I studied Ninjutsu but what I found was that not anyone practiced the very precise movement and body positioning it would take to actually "rip" someone's arm loose. Whenever I hear about "ripping" someones arm loose I like to see if you can "almost" rip my arm loose before I buy into the myth... never happened..period. Sometimes good ole wrasslin and getting busted up side of the head a lot will prepare you for 90 percent of the secret ninja stuff... IMHO... I will drive down on Friday and have the first session at 7:00 pm, we'll do a full day on Saturday and, for the hardy ones who survive the first two sessions, I'll do another session on Sunday before I drive home. See you there! Warmest personal regards, Rudy W. Timmerman, National Korean Martial Arts Association Inc. --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "J. R. After the last hotel did such a FINE job on their reservations system, we decided to go with a little more upscale place only a few minutes from the dojang. Secondly, we are holding another black belt advanced motion seminar on the Friday and Saturday the 9th and 10th of July. There is no charge, and last time we had almost 50 mutant black belts on Friday night. I will teach 90% of all the sessions. There will be a get-together at my home after dinner on Friday night....hopefully Ms. Hasten will continue her improved beverage control at the party........J. R.
