I think most Hapkido people view such a request as a sort of "Holy Grail". Just about everyone I know who is at all serious in their training is always looking to do a more effective technique, faster, against a larger, or more resistant attacker under less and less hospitable circumstances. I also agree that it is somewhat dis-ingenuous to use a Net to ask folks to produce in 25 words or less the single most optimal techniques from which a person might cherry-pick. FWIW. Find yourself a high school wrestling coach, and see if he'll let you rent him for a few hours on the mat. Asked to be shown the double leg, the single leg, and the high crotch takedowns. These won't "end a fight" per se, but it will show most people the ground real quick...including most trained martial artists. J.: As I am originally from Cypress, Texas (I even graduated from the, then only HS in Cypress) I can highly recommend several friends who are on this group. But Master Dennis McHenry dojang is in Spring, just north of Cypress on the other side of the Champions area and is very close to the Cypress area. Master Kang Woo is a 6th Dan HKD, 6th TKD, and 5th Judo and is a great instructor. Several of his students make the trek to Mississippi twice/year. He's a great man of integrity and character, plus he's an awesome instructor (graduate of Yong-In university in Korea). The students at the school whom your student would be training with are good folks. His website is Yonginacademy.com. Hope this helps. FWIW." One thing with a group like this (or other lists) is the variety of members participating. Some with little or no experience others with decades of experience in the martial arts. At the heart of such groups is the desire to learn from each other in some way. The question asked is simple on the surface but yet it has the potential for a great deal of discussion. While I will readily admit there is not a silver bullet for this question it does bring to my mind at least, the concept of "preparation". When I teach a short self defense course I talk about three principles - not to take up too much space I'll give you the three "P's" and a quick idea of what I talk about. Of course it's fleshed out when presenting, but to keep it short: 1) Preparation - Thinking about levels responses you are comfortable with, training things like that. 2) Prudence - Not putting yourself in situations that could present danger, walking down the street with $100 bills hanging out of your pocket. 3) Perseverance - once assaulted having the will power and determination to do what ever it takes to finish. > > Best Wishes, > > Bruce Rick Clark www.ao-denkou-kai.org --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "michael tomlinson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 17 Jun 2004 15:12:51 +0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] quick takedowns Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I was approached a few years back by a certain Florida Police Departments SWAT team commander and asked if I could put together a training program for them that involved quick asssailant takedowns... took me a while but I came up with a curriculum base that entailed 30 different quick takedowns.. these involved grabbing the body, arm, arms, head, low kicks, etc. and basically covered every angle you could possibly be in when approaching an assailant. Many are done from 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock angles. Things I had to consider in the curriculum were: body armor, gun retention, obstacles in the house, SWAT team balance and safety, etc.. the takedowns had to be fast, effective, not to fancy or transitional (no time for that), and medium level aggressive. By that I mean that if they were high level aggressive than you might as well pommel the assailent with your MP5, or just shoot them.. these takedowns are violent but in most instances not lethal although injuries very well might occur...I teach these takedowns in my Hapkido class now to my Sin Moo Hapkido blue belts and above... pretty cool stuff..But to teach these to just anyone without knowing them or what their intentions are? I wouldn't do it.. The reason for the attack was that the person who attacked us had something against my friends brother --__--__-- Message: 9 From: Chosondo@aol.com Date: Thu, 17 Jun 2004 21:50:26 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Upcoming Hapkido Seminar, Raleigh, NC Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ladies and gentlemen, I beg your indulgence in reminding all DDers of my upcoming seminar in Raleig NC.
