He is not at all picky about style, as long as he can learn something worthwhile. Thanks. (ACTS) I'm about 2/3 through my training period for becoming a certified instructor, but the school I was teaching at had to close. I got most of my teaching experience during our Saturday class and some during our 7PM Thursday class. Our "Mother " school ( Christ First Taekwondo") in the same town is still going strong, but they don't have Saturday classes anymore and both their beginner classes start too early in the evening for me to help teach.( I work late most of the time) Another problem I have is that I frequently get off too late to make it to class for my personal training. My instructors are pretty understanding since they are all volunteers and have jobs themselves, but none of them have to miss as much as me. I'm pretty good about training on my own, but I sometimes get behind on the curriculum and have to play "catch up" Has anyone ever been in a similar situation? Any suggestions for continuing my pursuit of becoming a certified instructor and keeping up my training?" MC Reply Dear Don, First bravo, and keep the fire going. I've been in that situation. 1. Make a commitment to your training time (whenever that can be and keep up the good work). 2. Given your specifics, I would consider volunteering/applying for the position of Saturday morning instructor at the mother school (helps them and helps you). 3. Given #2 above the owner/master instructor would find it in his/her interest to keep you up to speed on cirricula changes and other new and fun stuff at the dojang. There are few suppliers of traditional Korean swords. If you want a show piece for displaying the variations of sword types you can find some for low $$$$. But do not try to use these for combat drills or cutting. I have experienced breaking a $100 sword at the handle because "you get what you pay for". --__--__-- Message: 9 From: Patrick Baeder Organization: Auburn Academy of Martial Arts, LLC To: Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Martial arts at Ft. Drum, NY Date: Mon, 26 Jul 2004 22:34:02 -0400 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Linda, It just so happens that I used to be an Infantry Officer stationed at Ft. Drum and (at the time) a third degree in TKD. Unfortunately, I have not been there since 2001, so my information may be dated. At the main post physical fitness training center (I forgot what the name of it was) there was a National Guard Major who taught Ju-jitsu. He was pretty good (Has a 1st dan in HKD and I think TKD also). The focus on standing and grappling Ju-jistu styles. This is what I would recommend. The commercial martial art schools in Watertown were not very impressive (just my opinion). Drum there were a few classes taught at the rec centers and gyms on post. I'd look there first as Watertown (the nearest large town) is quite a hike. If he's married and need post housing, I'd suggest he's not accept off post military housing (it's a choice, you can get it quicker but it's a huge price.) Lowville is a 1.5 hr commute to the post in winder. 10th Mtn Division -- Climb to Glory!!! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I am happy to announce I am hosting 3 of the top people in Hapkido in the next 6 months at my school in Richardson (Dallas-Fort Worth area). On August 31st I will host Master Geoff Booth of Australia, 7th Dan, for a 2-hour evening seminar. Master Booth will be fresh from Master JR West's big seminar in Jackson, MI. Master Booth always leaves 'em smiling; his sense of humor (as well as his Hapkido and his DVD series) is outstanding. For more information see http://www.beckmartialarts.com/Boothflyer.html On October 9th and 10th I will have the honor of hosting Dojunim Han Jae Ji, 10th Dan, for a 2-day Sin Moo Hapkido seminar. It has been about 10 years since DJN has been in the DFW area. This is a rare and perhaps once in a lifetime opportunity to train with the founder. (If you question my calling DJN the founder, please see http://www.beckmartialarts.com/chkdfaq.html ) For more information see http://www.beckmartialarts.com/Ji_flyer.html On January 22nd of next year I will host Master J.R. West, 8th Dan, for a 1-day Hapkido seminar. Master West has been teaching Hapkido for decades in Jackson, MI; I'm very pleased to get him up to DFW.
