Is Master Booth at your dojang for the remainder of that week in August i.e. 24th - 28th ? Thank you for the early notice as I may just be able to make this scheduled seminar also. They come in 3 x 6 pcs, are 2" thick and interlock by lacing. There are different colors so you can designate areas if you wish and they clean easily. They absorb impact extremely well and all that is needed even for high falls (upper ranks). However, fairly expensive. michael whalen KSWnut --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Fri, 30 Jul 2004 09:54:10 -0400 From: Rudy Timmerman To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Testing Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mary writes: > Well, here I am again testing and nervous as usual Hello Mary. My group has access to and uses a foam block floor system. It's one of those designed specifically for gymnastic floor exercise. It's basically foam blocks, a thin layer of plywood, a thin layer of foam, and then a carpeting system velcroed onto the foam layer. As far as I'm concerned, that is the only way to fly. It is the BOMB!!! I would hate to know how much it cost to aquire and construct, but if I ever had my own facility I would do whatever it took to get a similar system. We had a guy get dropped HARD on that thing a few weeks ago, and he just bounced right back up...no injury. I was also surprised with the quality and attributes of the surface. I don't know what that blue carpet is made of, but it seems pretty resistant to wear and doesn't seem to capture odor like the typical commercial carpets used in homes and other places. At first, we thought we were going to have to roll mats across the surface in order to grapple, but we roll directly on the carpet and haven't experienced any "mat burn" hardly at all (much less than what you typically get from those blue fold out mats that you see in every martial arts school and kiddie gym program across the country). Ringworm has not been an issue yet either. Those that grapple a lot know what a pain THAT can be. I never thought I'd prefer a carpeted surface over a flat surface (have used high-end wrestling mat before), but there you go. Someone could probably dupe such a system pretty cheap. Instead of the high dollar foam blocks you can use old tires. The trick would be getting enough of them with a fairly uniform width. You would then cover this with plywood (quarter inch I would imagine). You could then either buy a new foam layer, or try to substitute something. Go to your carpet installers in town and politely ask them what they do with the old pads that they take out of people's houses. I imagine you could either take some off of their hands for free, or buy it off of them pretty cheap (or raid their dumpster after hours). The final surface could get tricky. You could spread a tarp, or cover it with a Velcro mat system. Indoor/outdoor carpet might be an option, but your applications would be limited (hard to grapple on, but would be good for stand-up work). I know a lot of small Judo clubs use the tire thing in order to get a spring floor effect without having to spend a ton of money. Puzzle mats...the only thing I like about them is the fact that they're cost effective (that's MBA-speak for "cheap"). They seem okay to run a karate/TKD/kickboxing program, but if you're going to do any kind of throws, takedowns, or grappling then it gets hairy. You'll have to use some kind of matting as a secondary surface for those sessions in order to mitigate impact and friction issues. I've grappled on these things before (a friend of mine uses them at his school), and it ain't pretty. If you double them up then they get kind of cushiony, but the mat burn is just atrocious...no way around that unless you like oil wrestling. I meant Turkish oil wrestling...get your filthy mind out of the gutter you uncultured heathen. You also have to constantly clean them. Those things attract dirt like NBA players attract hot women with mental issues. Just some thoughts... Welcome the opportunity to spar. It will really help you understand how far you have come. When I first started my martial arts journey, I hated sparring. Once I became more confident, I loved it. I know I'm paraphrasing Bruce Lee from The Tao Of Jeet Kun Do - his view was that we really learn about ourselves through interaction with our opponents! Look inside yourself for strength and courage. You'll do FINE! Jye Bruce Sims wrote: Dear Anthony: ".....My information to date has this (personally taking swords into and out of Korea) as being impossible barring two exceptions. I would be interested in the specifics of your plan in case there is more to the procedure of which I am unaware......" Absolutely. I had visions of this guy at the airport watching a few $kUS of swords being confiscated as he tried to leave the country with them. Even my own teacher, who is a Korean national, a recognized practitioner of standing and with preparation well in advance, had to walk a very careful line of questioning as he brought his swords through. And there was still the matter of getting a receipt signed by me and each of the other recipients attesting to our taking receipt of the swords back here in the States. Not quite like ordeing a wall-hanger through Century by ANY stretch of the imagination. FWIW.
