William French Anderson, 67, was jailed yesterday on $6 million bail pending arraignment Tuesday in Pasadena Superior Court, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. A USC Web site on Anderson lists his general biography beneath the headline "The Father of Gene Therapy." It says he was born and raised in Tulsa, Okla. and was educated at Harvard and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He has won dozens of academic and research awards, and has published more than 375 research articles. He has been awarded five honorary doctoral degrees, and holds a number of "significant" patients in the area of human gene therapy, according to his biographical information. He joined the USC faculty in 1992. He is a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and was the national team physician from 1981-88, the Olympic team physician in 1988, and won a gold medal in his age division in the AAU National Karate Championships in July 1998. Anderson was the alleged victim's karate teacher, according to the District Attorney's Office. The felony complaint for arrest warrant, issued yesterday, accuses Anderson of one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14 and five counts of lewd acts upon a child under the age of 14. Authorities said the girl is now 17. The complaint alleges the continuous sexual abuse occurred between March 1, 1999 and Sept. 30, 1999, and that the other crimes occurred between January 1997 and December 2001. The alleged crimes occurred at Anderson's home, said Deputy District Attorney Catherine Brougham. Anderson faces up to 56 years in state prison if convicted of all the charges, according to the District Attorney's Office. Deputies from the Sheriff's Department served search warrants at the defendant's home and office yesterday and arrested Anderson, according to Sandi Gibbons of the District Attorney's Office. The (new) instructor has asked me to take part in a competition this month, and I find myself feeling really nervous. I know the cause is that the competition is in Malaysia and I will be the only causasian there - which makes me stand out like a sore thumb. As well as the fact that I am 31 and most of the competitors are 18-20. So, if I do really badly, everyone gets to notice it, and the reputation will stick. Does anyone have any advice on dealing with nerves? I know that it is only a competition, and I shouldn't worry so much, but at 31 the idea of competing against a predominatly 18-20 year old batch of guys somehow just doesn't appeal! Advice is much appreciated - quite ashamed to feel so intimidated. I person try to prepare for the very worst case scenario, then see myself overcoming that situation. I too have entered competitions with younger people than myself [I'm 33] but I have found that I have certain advantages that you may have also; mental toughness, muscle stamina, physical toughness etc, using timing and distance. especially for points sparring. -----Original Message----- From: Neil Burton [mailto:neil_burton37@yahoo.com] Sent: 02 August 2004 04:12 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Combating Nerves and other stuff Hi All My instructor recently decided to quit ITF and join GTF and for various reasons I have decided not to follow him, and so have changed schools to another ITF school.
