My brother studies a Japanese art called aikido. A tradition for them is "summer camp", he has been attending these camps for several decades. They are a week long workshop with many instructors. They have held one at his aikido dojo for decades and everyone takes a week off work. Their organization is holding the 40th one at the organizations head dojo. The price, are you ready for this, is, and I quote: "The aikido community has grown over the past 40 years. The New York Aikikai has seen its share of change, but we have always valued our friendships. In our planning, one goal was to make the 2004 Summer Camp and 40th Anniversary Celebration affordable so that you can attend: the cost for seven days is $625". Now, in my humble hapkido dojang, I do not have any students, no matter how dedicated they are, yours truly included, that would seriously consider attending something this expensive. But I am lucky as I study hapkido. Now in hapkido, we have something like that. We split it up into 2 events that are 3 day weekends and we go to Jackson. It is only $65 for all 3 days. I am flying from Fargo (2 tickets), which isn't cheap, and adding a $625 price tag to that would be something I would have to question. Just my opinion. In the past 6 years I have been attending the event in Jackson held twice a year, I have missed once. I hope to see you in Jackson in a few weeks. ! :) Jere R. Hilland www.HapkidoSelfDefense.com PS. If you are interested in a quick promotion by attending seminars, just remember how hard it was going through the belt ranks, in your art, this is what we, in hapkido go through. If you are interested in learning something new and having a good time, then this is for you. For the pre-registration cost of $65.00, Master West does rent a hotel for 3 days, pre-registration end on August 9th. http://www.hapkido.com/Seminars/2004_Fall_Seminar.htm --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Wed, 04 Aug 2004 07:41:20 -0400 From: Pat Montini To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Visualization techniques Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I appreciate the sharing of info on combating nerves. It seems as though many have responded to this by using visualization. Can anyone explain more on this technique? When I was a color belt, our age division was 18-35 (I was 32-33 then)... Invariably I got paired up against some 18 year old who thought all those flashy jumping spin kicks were cool. They look cool. Hard to use them effectively in sparring though... My greatest asset then, even as a color belt, was patience. As an adult, I had a lot more of it, and would just wait for them to make a mistake... And yes, I'm a counter / defensive fighter. With my size, I can't afford to be chasing some jackrabbit around the ring... :) Anyway, the point being that even if they aren't cocky, they may still be likely to try something that is recently learned or they thing will score. Be patient and wait for your opening... If that doesn't work, take the other advice posted and run right over them... Sometimes it only takes once for them to get that self-doubt seed planted... :) Best of luck with the tournament! <> - Bert Edens, 2nd Dan Recommended Springdale, Arkansas --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2004 10:10:43 -0500 From: "Dunn, Danny J GARRISON" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Question for Craig Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Craig, A few days ago you described the floor where you work out. I have not seen one like you discribed, but can you tell me a little more about the size and distrobution of the foam blocks, and how the wood sheets are kept in place? Looks like if the sheets would have to be fastened in some way or they would bounce our of place --__--__-- Message: 6 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net From: Mike_Devich@selinc.com Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2004 11:43:10 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Disturbing Arrest (Lois Knorr) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Last post on this topic for me. It was a bit of warped humor and frustration that caused my last post. I have more interest in this topic than many people. I do believe that they should never be let out of jail. Nothing can ever be done to undo the amount of trauma caused by such warped "humans". Close your eyes and 'see' yourself sparring an opponent or performing your poomsae or whatever activity you are interested in. Watch yourself performing to perfection. Slow at first, then faster and faster until you're watching yourself perform at full speed. Pay attention, in your mind, to detail in the movements that you are performing. Do this about 10 mins or so a day. Even twice a day is fine.
