I am now preparing for the competition which is on August 21/22 - and will post the results. I guess nerves happen to everyone, and self doubt is part of being human. As a student of Taekwon-Do (or any Martial Art) one of the things that I should be trying to learn is rising above those "in-built" nervous reactions. By rising to the challenge of a competition, whether I win or not, I will at least have faced down my fears. Once again - thanks all Taekwon Neil --- Bert Edens wrote: > At 05:01 8/4/04, > the_dojang-request@martialartsresource.net wrote: > >Neil, > >Don't sweat the age difference, many times I have > won the 35 and up heavy > >Div and gone on to compete for Grand and got a > chance to spank some 18-34 > >butt, it's not how old you are it all in your head, > Visualize, Train, Make > >It Yours, Good Luck!! > >bernard > > Greetings, all... > When I was a color belt, our age division > was 18-35 (I was 32-33 > then)... They sell their systems in 42' by 42' sections, and that includes about 1,000 of the foam blocks. Evidently, they send you a video and other materials that shows the pattern and placement of the blocks. That alone is about $2,000. Then you have to go to the lumber yard and get the appropriate hardboard and strandboard (they tell you what to get, and how to overlay it). Finally, you have to buy the carpet and foam. I imagine there may be other companies that sell the whole shebang (blocks, wood, and carpet in one shot). I'm not sure how the wood panels are kept in place. The next time I'm there I might see if I can somehow take a peek underneath and see how it was done. My former organization had/has a "Master's Clinic" held yearly for (4 days to a week I think) for 4th dan and higher (TSD Masters) and select invited Master's candidates (3rd dans that have been invited to pre-test/test). I have no idea what the cost is but, my point is as a school owner for 10 years (1st through 3rd dan) I could not attend. What GM West has organized to offer us is in my humble opinion as important and valuable for people who run schools. For me as a lowly 4th dan, I get to line up and train with folks with twice my experience in the arts, and a variety of arts, and rub sholders with GM's like Dr. Kimm, West and Hodder. Based on what most other 8th dan's charge, $65 is cheap for a ONE DAY seminar, now add to that all the variety of the various other Masters that will be there to share, and I can't think of a reason not to be there. Since August of 2000 I have missed twice. Once I convinced my self that I didn't have enough cash (If that ever happens again, I will hide in Mr. Clarke's trunk and sleep on the floor at West's Hapkido :-)). The other time was this March after my Feb. ankle reconstruction. You have been forewarned. There will be a rather larger TangSooDo player with a bionic ankle wandering around Jackson. This year I will once again bring my right hand (Gumby) and my dojang dummy (Rodney) along with one of "Charlies Angels" (Tannis). BTW, Tannis might be looking for a female martial artist to share her room so if you are female and going solo and would like to split the room cost, email me privately and I will give her your email. I love the place. Good people, good food, and good training... what more can a simple man want :) Jere, recognizing that very problem, high cost of staying a week to train somewhere, I have revived my old seminar on the 1-4th of july long weekend. we stay at my home in tents, train the entire weekend, and we sit up and swap lies around the campfire. Horseback riding, archery, and lots of other things we can't normally do are part of the training. All of that for $45.00 for the weekend. As you see, there still are some bargains around:) As usual, I encourage every NKMAA member to attend JR's event in MS, and I hope to see many of you at one of the NKMAA seminars Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Michael Rowe" To: Date: Thu, 5 Aug 2004 10:48:37 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Thoughts on Seminars Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net J R Hilland writes: "Now, in my humble hapkido dojang, I do not have any students, no matter how dedicated they are, yours truly included, that would seriously consider attending something this expensive." This was written in response to the following: "In our planning, one goal was to make the 2004 Summer Camp and 40th Anniversary Celebration affordable so that you can attend: the cost for seven days is $625" The $625 covers 3 meals a day, and housing and the seminar. Lets look at the 3 day Hapkido event held 2 times a year for a total of 6 days. Cost of Seminar - $65 x 2 = $130 Cost of Lodging $70 x 4 = $280 (lets assume the average hotel Friday Night, Saturday night) $70 x 4 days = $70 x 6 = $420 (If one stays the Sunday night to recover) Food $140 (Friday 1 meal, Saturday 3, Sunday 3 X 2 weekends average $10 meal) Total Cost for the 6 days of training is $550 (not staying on Sunday) or $690 with a Sunday stay. Now if you are lucky to live in the area then you get to save $280 or $420 on the hotel. However, after the type of seminar that the New York Aikikai puts on one does not usually want to drive anywhere, plus there is a benefit to staying in the local of the seminar. I assume that the training at the Jackson event is just as difficult, from all that is told to me. So overall one needs to look at all things when looking at seminar costs. Jackson is just as expensive as the New York Aikikai event. (or at least close).
