Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In our WTF style TKD school virtually every class starts out that way. From single middle punches, to many punches (try 25 punches Kihap on every fifth punch) low middle high, high middle low, and low high middle, strikes to either side, low blocks, high blocks, inside blocks, outside blocks, and about any other type of strike or block in the curriculum. All from the deep horse stance. I just assumed every school (at least the percussive schools) started the same way... HSMP (as well as double and triple middle punches) are part of my Hapkido program and a typical warm-up. We never NOT do it. It is such a great prepatory exercise and yes it teaches you a lot. For me, we do it "slightly" differently. Our HSMP (i.e. Horse Stance Middle Punch...sorry) is not rigid. We use a great deal of hip motion when we punch and are very loose up until we connect with our target. If our belts are not swooshing the air, my students are doing it wrong! Just my .02c...very good question BTW. I, myself am with the United Martial Arts Society, which is open to all styles. This makes for some good networking as well as cross-training with other martial arts through seminars and workshops. Hope this information is helpful to you. Good luck! Sam Saenz III Dan United Martial Arts Society __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Especially spending much time in the low(er) horse stance given so much emphasis on kicks and kicks and kicks, and did I mention kicks. :) I loved all the responses. Good to see that traditional training is not dead. For those with a large number of children in the dojang... are you still able to run your mixed (children + adults) classes in a traditional manner? What I'm wanting to say though is about the two hour classes. WOW! Wish we had those! Ours were cut from 1 1/2 hours to one hour several years and I still protest this almost weekly.
