At around 3:50 p.m., Keiichi Yamaguchi, 63, a resident of Matsuda, Kanagawa Prefecture, was picking mushrooms on a mountain in Omachi, Nagano Prefecture, when an Asiatic black bear suddenly attacked him, police said. The bear bit Yamaguchi on the hand and left thigh and he responded by hitting it on the nose and in the stomach. When he used a judo technique to hurl the bear, it ran away from the scene. The bear was about 170 centimeters long, police said. Yamaguchi said his injuries are not serious, but he intends to receive medical treatment at a local hospital. (Compiled from Mainichi and wire reports, Japan, Aug. 19, 2003) I wonder what hand techniques were used to strike the nose and stomach And 117 centimeters? It is a well produced historical film featuring quality acting and excellent fighting scenes. I am unsure of the historical accuracy of the story line, but the quality of the film does not suffer at all from this. It is available for purchase from Amazon.com. Why this film has not made it to American "Big Screens", I cannot imagine, as the film is at leaston par with what I have seen of other historical films focusing on Asian Martial Arts. FWIW Jared Circle ";I often wonder why we don't see Korea's stories on the big screen like those of China, and at times Japan? Korea's history if anyone's is rich and full of action. I've seen previews for the Epic 'Hero'...and it looks great, but I would love to finally see a great quality epic about ancient Korea's battles." --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Jared Circle" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 15 Aug 2004 08:20:21 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] Fighter in the Wind Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I just returned from seeing the new film, Fighter in the Wind, and as there have been two posts in regard to it (one specific and one general) I thought I would offer up my two cents worth. The film is worth seeing for the fight scenes alone (for instance I enjoyed it despite only being able to clearly understand the dialogue from the American GIs). It gets slow in the middle for about a half hour while a psuedo "love story" is developed, but that ends just in time for a final showdown style fight sequence. I don't want to divulge to much, for the sake of those who might yet see the film, but for those of you who were "riding the fence" in regards to seeing this film, jump off the fence and get in the theater. Dae Sung Lee, who was dismissed in April, filed a $1 million lawsuit two weeks ago claiming he was removed because of his Korean heritage. U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway ruled Friday that he failed to show that the U.S. Taekwondo Union and the U.S. Olympic Committee discriminated against him. The union approved him as head coach in March 2003 and later sent him to Athens on a site visit. His nomination was approved by the USOC in October 2003. Based on new selection criteria, Jean Lopez, older brother and coach of team member Steven Lopez, was appointed as the taekwondo coach on July 19. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Sun, 15 Aug 2004 12:07:13 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] South Korean taekwondo team wants redemption in Athens. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net South Korean taekwondo team wants redemption in Athens. After pioneer Kim jailed for fraud, S. Korea fighting off improving European nations SEOUL - For South Korea's taekwondo team, the trip to Athens this month is as much about redemption as it is about beating back fast-rising European challengers for gold medals in the country's national martial art. A sport that mixes judo moves and sharp kicks, taekwondo served South Korea as a near-certain source of glory when it was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and in its debut as an official event four years ago in Sydney. But it was outside the ring that South Korean taekwondo suffered a body blow this year with the jailing on multiple corruption charges of the man who put the sport on the world map. Former International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice-president Kim Un-yong was jailed for two-and-a-half years in June on corruption charges connected with his leadership of the South Korean National Olympic Committee and the World Taekwondo Federation. One of many prominent South Koreans snared in the latest of numerous attempts to root out corruption, Kim was charged with taking 3.8 billion won ($3.26 million) from taekwondo federations and receiving bribes from sports officials and businesses. Two months later, the South Korean taekwondo team's four members crisply kick cushions at a brand-new training center named "Return in Triumph." "After the Kim scandal, people are saying that there should be a new star to devote himself to the globalization of taekwondo," said Moon Dae-sung, one of South Korea's medal hopefuls and a doctoral student in the ancient martial art. "I want to be that much-needed star who will make a clean image for this sport," he said. Kim's downfall after three decades as the godfather of taekwondo caused panic among South Koreans, who feared their sport could even be dropped as an Olympic event in the face of lobbying by China and Japan for other martial arts. Taekwondo means "the way of kicking and striking" and was promoted by South Korea to distinguish itself from Asian rivals. In late June, Kim was replaced as taekwondo federation head by Choue Chung-won, elected in the first direct vote in the federation's 30-year history. Choue's task is to restore integrity and make up ground, lost during the internal conflict, to other countries that have become more competitive in taekwondo. "The taekwondo environment abroad has changed a lot," said Cheong Gook-hyun, professor of taekwondo at the Korean National Sports University. "We should be more open to new talent so that we can ride on the wave of change." Asked what goals he had set for Athens, team manager Kim Se-hyuk told Reuters: "We want to win all four golds." But he conceded his team faced "menacing rivals" from countries such as France, Denmark and Italy. "European taekwondo is in full swing," Kim Se-hyuk said. "Greece in particular has threatening competitors -- all the more because they have home-field advantage." One of the strongest medal hopes to emerge from intensive physical training in the mountains of Kangwon province (northeast of Seoul) is the swift-kicking, 18-year-old Hwang Kyung-sun. Hwang has been dubbed "Cinderella" because she won a ticket to Athens without having any previous international experience. Taekwondo professor Cheong describes her form as "amazingly perfect," adding: "I don't want to withhold any compliment for her." Manager Kim Se-hyuk says the internationalization of taekwondo -- which South Koreans had aggressively promoted -- has eroded the country's traditional dominance of the sport. "South Korean players used to play the rabbit against the slow and steady tortoise," Kim Se-hyuk said. "Now we need to be mentally armed again." --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Sun, 15 Aug 2004 15:12:38 -0500 From: "bmac2" To: "Dojang Digest" Subject: [The_Dojang] South Texas Friedship Tournament Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Greetings all DDers, Hodder's Korean Martial Arts and Braeswood Martial Arts hosted the first of hopefully many South Texas Friendship Tournament this past weekend. It is always great to see you guys and watch you do your stuff. I think one the best things about this tournament was the friendly competition. It is not often that we get to have that type of atmosphere these days:) But I have to say the very best thing of the day was the after Tournament BBQ.
