We had a great time with participants from Ontario, British Columbia, Washington, and of course Oregon. It was awesome to have practitioners of Kuk Sool, Tae Kwan Do, Sin Moo HapKiDo, Jujitsu, Karate, and Police Combatives join us for a great day of training and hard work. I want to thank all the DD members for their participation and helping make this seminar such a success. Remember, for anyone close to the NKMAA headquarters in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, Master Booth will be with Master Timmerman for a seminar on Aug. 26th. Hope your doing better. You can limp around with Jennifer at the workshop as she is still under physical therapy for her back. But to be an official member of the FM 1960 (in NW Houston) ride-n-slide club you have to have a Harley and spend at least a month in the hospital or break two or more bones. I was president in 1995 and 1996 as I broke the most bones, both years! :) See you this weekend in Jackson with my dedicated old group in Cincinnati. Arthritis from old injuries don't hurt as much as the original, but they last a lot longer. Vioxx is your friend. :) Jere R. Some time ago I tested a wonderful gentleman named T.C.Lee. He was a red belt for 5 years and on his 92nd birthday tested and passed for black belt. He sparred a 73 year old and defeated him on points. Regrettably he passed after his 94th birthday. You can make the record for 2nd dan! Tried to send this a couple of times, but the list was down. (I suspected as much, but Ray Terry confirmed it) I'm OK, the parents are OK, the house lost about 20% of it's shingles, the pool cage (A screened-in enclosure around the pool and lanai [Florida for 'back porch'] that keeps the bugs and other animals out) is gone. The roof leaks and we haven't had power (Except for the Generator) for over a week. They say power should be completely restored by the 29th of this month. ACK!!! Ladies and gents, we got BLASTED. Every single mobile home trailer park in the county was either heavily damaged or destroyed. Power poles snapped in two like matchsticks. Houses with no roofs, trees uprooted, poll cages and porches eliminated. Schools are in need of serious repairs, and Fire and Police Stations are operating in either damaged stations or somewhere else, because the station is too badly damaged to be used. The damage estimates are already over 7 Billion dollars. We're getting help from all over the place, and we're one of the lucky ones. Arcadia, NW of where I live, also got blasted, and they are a rural county, without the resources of Charlotte County. Just when I think we had it bad, I see someone who got it worse. Well, that is all for now. I have no idea when I'll be back on-line for anything more then a quick note like this. Hope to see you soon.... I constantly pulled shots or decided against realistic attacks for fear of hurting my opponent. Only after getting creamed in several bouts did it start to penetrate that I could really, honestly attack using a full menu of options. I'm looking forward very much to having my own set of swords arrive so I can continue this process of freeing my mind. I had no idea that safety concerns had become so entangled in my sparring concepts. Anyway, if you do any sparring with some kind of weapon like the juk-do or one of the many types of padded weapon, and realism is one of your training goals, you might want to take a look at RSW (www.rsw.com.hk). They have video of various bouts so you can see the equipment in action, swords, knives, polearms, shields, etc. The lifespan of the equipment is said to be six months of hard use once per week. The Hong Kong group I met spar every weekend. The sword can be repaired once it wears out as long as the inner core of the weapon has not been broken. Once my order of swords arrives, I will keep track of their durability and let you know how they fare under the conditions in my group." MC Reply Anthony, that means a lot coming from you. I miss my days of padded dagger fighting, and keep putting that on my list of things to do (to make some padded daggers for the dojang). We too used the honor system, and required realistic "decommissioning" of the effected part e.g. if you got cut on the arm/fingers affecting the grip muscles you had to drop your weapon and try to pick it up in the other hand. If you got cut in the leg, you could no longer put weight on it and so on. The leader of our little group was deadly with the bastard and twohanded sword, but would fight me with single and double daggers and allowed me to include, kicks, strikes (pulled) and take downs and sweeps. We really had a lot of fun back then... Hello Mac. Hope you are doing well after the accident. Gotta keep that thing on the road eh:) Sincerely, Rudy" MC Reply, Master Mac, I guess that means motorcycle skills are not on the 7th Dan requirements :-) Seriously, I hope you are well and not injured (other than pride and some paint on the bike). Looking forward to seeing you in Jackson. This year Mr. Clarke will ride with us and we'll have two red belts and a 4th Gup. Basically, it looks like flat popcicle with a groove around the outside edge. In the groove is glued some rope. Douse the rope with red or blue chalk dust and viola....if you get hit with it, the chalk leaves a tell tale stain. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles Richards" To: Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 7:25 AM Subject: [The_Dojang] Realistic Weapons > We too used the honor system, and > required realistic "decommissioning" of the effected part > e.g. if you got cut on the arm/fingers affecting the grip muscles you > had to drop your weapon and try to pick it up in the other hand. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Gang I have been a lurker for about the last 2 1/2 years (studying Hapkido for a bit longer than that). Have learned a great deal from all of you, but now have a question that hasn't been discussed...at least during my lurking. I will be away from home (I live in Chicago) for a couple months and would love to be able to continue taking classes while away. One problem with this is that I will be spending only a week in each town (Nashville, Tampa, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Norfolk Va. Rochester Pa, etc.). My question is, do those of you who have schools allow people from out of town to take a couple classes at your school...or is it even a good idea? If this seems to be an option....any recommendations for Hapkido in these areas? Thanks much Steve --__--__-- Message: 10 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Tue, 24 Aug 2004 17:09:52 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Reno Open TKD Chip Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reno Open Tae Kwon Do Championship September 5, 2004 Labor Day Weekend Reno - Sparks Convention Center 4590 S.
