Master West Seminar (Braeswood Martial Arts) ".....Kevin James also told my black belt that Chung Do Kwan is a little to unknown style and also that World Taekwondo Federation credentials don't mean much......" Sorry, but someone making a generalization which includes discounting the integrity of credentialing brings back too many memories of the not-so-distant past. Lifes too short to go down THAT road again. If he's really an instructor under either one of these people then he would have a certificate stating as such. I've got plenty of seminar certificates, but I would never post them on a website as evidence of training or certification. For what it's worth, I've never heard of ATAMA (the org through which he's "certified" in JKD) nor the Japanese gentleman that he mentions as his certifying instructor. I would be curious as to the nature of the "vibe" that you're getting from him. Personally, I always trust my gut instinct on these things. I think you got the distance award this time. Although I must confess that you do have the same accent of those here in South Canada (aka North Dakota), something I am still not used to. It was indeed a pleasure meeting you Lois and I hope we see you again. Jere R. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr. Pierini states: "I'm concerned that the analysis of someones character, never mind their martial art, in a public mailing list seems to me to be an inappropriate use of venue. In an anonymous situation, it's far too easy for character analysis to become character assasination." I hardly consider myself anything other than a junior member of this DD, however, I think that if this isn't the place to discuss issues of this nature than where do we discuss them? This web is hardly anonymous. "I would counsel that you use your own instincts, perhaps speak directly with the people that he alleges to have granted him certifications or contact one or more of the clients listed. Now in situations like this, I often use the "would-I-let-him-date-my-daughter?" method. Your mileage may vary." Good advice, all the way. I don't know Kevin James from Adam; I did look at his website. I personally am often leery of people that teach Jeet Kun Do. It seems to me to be more of a concept than a style. The Tao of Jeet Kun Do was published posthumously after all, and seems to me, to be rather incomplete. I'm not trying to start a flame war here, and Bruce Lee's accomplishments were many. He was however a young man at the time of his death and I suspect that his philosophy and his art were far from hashed out. Of course this is coming from someone that was peeing in his diapers while he was kicking butt... Of course this has nothing to do with what Capt. Boit was asking, but I understand his concern. Slick web sites and lots of certificates are certainly no measure of the martial artist. And having said that, I'm certain that if Kevin James is what he says he is, then he would welcome scrutiny. I know I would. Eric Walker Self Defense Systems Hapkido --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
