Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I've posted an easter egg on our website again. If you go to www.natkd.com/tkd_forms and click on the header (picture at the top of the page) it will play a 3 minute video trailer highlighting the Masters Demonstration from the seminar. This seminar was awesome! There was plenty of good training and good times spent with friends. This was an exceptional seminar, I made quite a few new friends this time and GM Hodder was kind enough to let take his place in the Master's Demonstration. GM West was kind enough to wipe up the mess I left on the mat. If you haven't been to a Jackson Seminar, I can not recommend it highly enough. If you go to my schools website, http://www.pitkd.com and click on the korean terms button, there is sections for hand and foot techniques, blocks, hyung, and general terms. dont know if they will all apply to you, but unless you want to talk about your day at work with your instructor, they cover pretty much anything youd need to know. Hope this helps. Sorry, I don't get to take the mickey out of too many Pomy guys in here! Anyhoo, um... Ryan Shroyer had a tripod site that had the shamelessly unofficial TKD Hyung, I found some links to some sound files for various commands (Junbi, etc) But for the life of me I can't remember the actual site. Try google or some other search engine if you have no luck with Shroyer's site. Cheers Mate! I love reading about all these great seminars and events in the US. The only downside is I haven't been in country for four years now (been living in Australia). Does any body out there live in AUS? Or at least know of any events happening in WA (Western Australia for the un-innitiated, not Washington). Anyhoo, It'd be great if anyone could point me in the right direction. Oh, just leave out any Burridge Martial Arts Academy events, I pretty much already know about most of them. Thanks again guys!! I would like to know if anyone has any martial arts dealing with him, or know if his credentials are valid. If someone wants to "bash" him on a personal level, then I don't care for that. I am concerned for a fellow martial artist (my black belt student who is probably going to teach TKD at a gold's gym UNDER his supervision), so I wanted to get any info from you all. Personally I didn't get this vibe, (because I never met him), but I used her exact words to describe the situation. I know in my personal experiences with various marital arts is that most systems (regardless of style) have a basic philosophy which is like "integrity, loyalty, perseverance, self-control....blah, blah, blah." You could study Hapikdo, Karate, Kung Fu, etc, and they usually have creeds, mottos, or tenets like that. He flat out told her that he wanted her to abandon her current organization (who she feels loyal to), so that he can make more money by him certifying all of her promotions (which I don't see his valid credentials). Some marital artists don't value credentials and I am fine with that, but our organization does value or Taekwondo credentials. (on a side note -- Our school loves practicing with anyone regardless of their credentials. We love to learn, and keep an open mind). He advertises on his website that he is a 5th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Then in smaller writing below it, it states "WTF". Um...yeah...I clicked on his credential link and it is a "WTA" certificate. So if he thinks that Chung Do Kwan is an unknown Kwan, and Kukkiwon is not worth anything...what is up by advertising "WTF" credentials? Also, what 5th degree black belt says D-A-N for his rank and not D-O-N? Many students first pronounce it as D-A-N , but not when they are up in the black belt ranks. Maybe I am wrong on this one...do ITFers say DAN, over DON? I thought Karate people even pronounce it as DON. Set me straight because I know I always can learn something new from you all. Sorry to be a bit long here. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Stovall, Craig" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2004 09:24:35 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Character issues. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> The only "problem" with JKD is that it takes many forms, and there is no final arbiter that can say with certainty, "this is JKD, and this is not". You have the "Original" crowds that teach some version of Jun Fan Kickboxing and refer to it as JKD. Then there's the concepts crowd that usually teaches a multi-faceted curriculum including Kali, Silat, Muay Thai, Jun Fan, Shooto, etc...all under the umbrella of "JKD Concepts". Then you have the Matt Thornton's of the world that essentially teach a MMA/NHB curriculum, and call it JKD. And of course, there's the Nucleus. They like to sit around and discuss what Bruce Lee ate for breakfast each morning on the set of 'Longstreet'. This freedom of expression is GREAT when you have well-intentioned, well-trained, and highly educated martial artists practicing and creating under the banner of JKD. The flip side of that coin is that this very same freedom allows hucksters to come in and start teaching under the JKD banner in order to form an association with a legendary martial arts personality. I'm not calling any particular person a huckster, but that's the situation we're faced with. Kim, First, sorry to hear about your back. One of your first goals will be to recover completely from your injury and then strengthen your back to prevent future injuries. Naturally, you should work with your doctor regarding this. I have two good books on back pain that include exercises and strategies for healing back pain and keeping it from reoccuring. I will post complete information on these two books when I get home. Again, you need to work with your doctor regarding your specific injury and its healing and recovery. Second. Weight training is great, and should be done by everyone. I recently read WEAR AND TEAR by Dr. Bob Arnot, a good book regarding helping and preventing the wear and tear on joints. One chapter was specifically about strength training to help joints and joint pain. However, before you can design a program of weight training, you first need to identify your training goals, and look at where you are right now. Weight training to help you compete in MA tournaments is quite different from training for a bodybuilding contest, which is very different from training for powerlifting, which is different from..... And a person new to strength training will train differently than a person who has been training a long time. Therefore, before I can recommend training resources I need to know some of your goals for training and level of experience with strength training. After training with a basic routine for a while, you can look to more advanced routines and look toward different resources to modify your training for specific goals. Modifying your training is important too. (Periodization is the principle, and there are different ways to periodize your workouts) I have rows and rows of books regarding training, health and nutrition and find that I have learned from all of them, even though I don't necessarily agree with them all, or follow what is in all of them. Let me know more about your goals, and I may be able to give you more resources.
