First, he claims to teach JKD concepts but his certificates from Dan Inosanto & Richard Bustillo appear to be for participation; not for certification for teaching the art at any level. He is not listed as a certified teacher under Dan. How long did he study with either of these gentlemen? His arnis training certification appears to be 10 hours of training under Bustillo, as well as some time with "Nene" Tortal. How long did he study Arnis/ Kali with either of these gentleman? "He thinks that Chung Do Kwan is an unknown Kwan" ???? The man who signed his WTA (Not WTF as advertised) 3rd dan certificate was no other than GM Duk Sung Son of the CHUNG DO KWAN. If he knew so much about the art... I think he would at lease know his own associations lineage. How long did he train in TKD and with whom? Why does he claim WTF certification yet presents a WTA certificate? As for his SEAL background, I have no idea. I would ask him if he knows Frank Cucci (former Navy Seal... Member of Seal Team 6 (DEVGROUP) and instructor of BJJ, JKD Concepts...etc... to the Seal teams.) Frank was and is Chief Instructor of the Naval Special Warfare Unarmed Combat Course during the time that Mr. James says that he served as a member of SEAL Team 5, and Frank's main teacher of JKD concepts was Dan Inosanto... So they should know each other. The SEAL community is a small and very tight group. The guy may be great, and he may have many skills. All I know is that I would never post a certificate of participation for a seminar as proof of my qualifications in that area of study. If I trained for 10 hours in Hapkido it does not make me an expert in the art... It may just have provided enough information to totally confuse me and help get me killed if I tried to use it after such a short time of practicing and studying the art. If a seminar is all day (8 to 10 hours long), I may retain (able to do fairly well) three or four skills of the fifty or so shown. To claim that I can understand the basics of any art, never mind be proficient in the art, In 10 hours would be insane. He wants one of the black belts in my organization to teach Taekwondo to kids (while he is going to offer Jeet Kun Do to adults). Kevin James also told my black belt that Chung Do Kwan is a little to unknown style and also that World Taekwondo Federation credentials don't mean much. I am curious as to what you all think about this guy (Kevin James) www.irondragon.cjb.net . I am getting a funny vibe from him. I live in the UK and have recently taken up Tae Kwon Do and I am lovin' it. I am interested in learning the Korean language necessary for the Martial Art and maybe more. I have searched the internet and have found a couple of sites that teach you how to count to ten. I need something with sound files to get pronunciation. I have also tried to find language courses on CD or CD Rom unsuccessfully. Can anyone advise me on where to find suitable resources. Many students first pronounce >it as D-A-N , but not when they are up in the >black belt ranks. Maybe I am wrong on this one...do >ITFers say DAN, over DON? I thought Karate people >even pronounce it as DON. Set me straight >because I know I always can learn something new from >you all. I have heard *Americans* pronounce the korean for "degree" as dAn many times and from different organizations. I recall GM Sereff of the USTF (former NGB for the ITF) at a training camp in 1993 referring to the black belts as "dAns" several times. GM K.S. Hwang (head of KATU, also a former NGB of the ITF) I have heard refer to dOns. He is, obviouslly, a Korean. When I was training at a WTF club back in college the Korean Master instructor pronounced it dOn, as did the other Korean who instructed class from time to time. I should note that I have also heard many American pronounce it dOn as well. So it seems to me that it's more a matter of how authentic one tries to get in their pronunciation of Korean, not what organization one belongs to. Well... You have to qualify for the olympics, right? And I would guess that there's a lot of competition to go to the olympics. Where you take the kneeling position (seiza or anjo) and push one leg out as if you were doing a side kick. I find this a lot easier on the body, but can't honestly say if it's the best way to stretch for maximum efficiency. We've been using this stretch for a couple of months now and I definitely feel better.
