The term is used in CMA to represent the interaction between two people who are not combatants and not fighting to the death. This terminology has been used by them since before the MDK was founded. Don't necessarily infer. We ARE players when we interact, unless we are trying to kill each other. f. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "J.R. Watching you progress over the years has been great. I know how difficult earning the KSB rank is and at your young age it is downright inspirational. I have seen guys in there 20s turn tail and run trying to achieve what you have set your mind and body to do. The only problem is I can't complain about my difficulties around you LOL. I look forward to watching that BB being tied around your waist in November. I do seem to break them after about three months. Never by a student, but always by me. I only own two Black boards, so the red one has to be the third board and I seem to keep breaking them at the interlocking edge. The blue board is perfect for kids under 60# and is about like a 5x12 board. Allowing any adult to strike the blue board with any reasonable force will destroy the interlock and/or break off the interlock. The also make an easier Yellow board, which I guess is for Pee-Wees It took me about a year to wear down the interlock on the black board. But when I ordered a second black board, I just put one new side with one old side and have two boards each equal to about one wood board. Hmmmm? Well bet Ondrej, Master Segarra, or Der might know about that better than I. I have been really lucky, to have a Shito and Shorin Ryu Master (Master Paramo) about less than 10 minutes from my Dojang. He does not the DEEEEP history, but has REALLY, REALLY nice looking Okinawan Karate Do! So I get to cross-train with him, and vice versa (on the differences of the three styles). I have HEARD and READ what you are saying (about Shito, Shudo, Shorin, etc.), but I am NOT sure about most of it. I will ask Master Paramo to tell me as MUCH as he knows, and I will also confer with the above mentioned (including yourself!) TSD'rs, and I will get back to you! Peace..... Congratulations on the courage to take in a person who is paraplegic and can't use their legs! I believe that it will be an investment well worth the time. I have a son. God created him as a quadriplegic and severely brain damaged. My other sons are (were) in Tae Kwon Do and both have social/mental dysfunction. I would say that they take after their father but, alas, they are adopted kids so can't use my genes as a crutch. Two small suggestions regarding the wheelchair bound student. Push them just as hard as you would a student who has full use of their legs. To do any differently is patronizing them and their condition. Secondly, since he cannot stand to perform poomse, have him learn the moves, stances, hand position and body placement of each poomse. When you believe him ready to test (hopefully with the rest of the class) ask him to call out the stances and body position as he moves his arms. He can either move his chair to position or remain facing the testing board. Okay, I lied. Thirdly, allow him to participate in Kyukpa and Kyroogi. He should only spar with black belts, in my opinion, so that he does not get hit but, for the opponent's sake, they don't kick the wheelchair and disable themselves. Personality is controllable to a degree and different than physical limitations. When he/she acts like a jerk, whines, argues or uses other non-productive methods, call their hand just as you would a gymnast, football player, etc. If he/she chooses to attain a black belt, it will mean the world to them. Their skills should be measured and graded so that the black belt doesn't come with an asterisk saying "crippled". If you don't mind spending more time to get to your current rank in a new system, go with them. They have always had a more "traditional" (no flames please) flavor than the WTF schools I've seen. There could be exceptions, but most of the WTF schools I observed when I was shopping for a school were "sport"/"Olympic" oriented. That is not what I was looking for, nor was it what I considered IMHO "traditional". Don't rush into one particular school right away. Ask lots of people. Some of the best schools don't even advertise. So you might not even see them in the book. If your school teaches HKD there is hundreds of sit down DCAA’s they can learn, also teach them forms, the old palgwes and kichos lend them self to this. They can also learn weapons: stick, fan, long stick and cane. John Merwin CIMA Training Center __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I started training in Hapkido 3 years ago at age 47. I went from 2 classes per week, up to 4-6 per week. It is one of the best things I have done for myself. A few things I learned along the way...the hard way: It's very important to listen to your body.(1) A little muscle soreness is one thing. Lots of muscle soreness or joint pain is telling you something. (2) Learn how to stretch properly. This very well might mean going outside of your dojang for advice...to a GOOD physical therapist, etc. Often, old-school martial artists have not kept up on the latest stretching information. (3) Many classes per week which include super high reps of certain kicks or strikes will take their toll sooner or later. Push yourself, but keep it fun and safe.
