So the amount of techniques is not increased but just the understanding of that knowledge plus time in, promotion of the art etc. Brian On Sep 24, 2004, at 6:01 AM, the_dojang-request@martialartsresource.net wrote: > >> I agree.| 5 Dans seem enough.| The rest seems a little....self >> effacing.| >> Unfortunately...I haven't had a lick of success in convincing anyone >> of >> this......as no one want to 'give up' rank (take me for >> instance...I'm a >> 6th...but I don't really care about that...and I'd be just as please >> to >> be referred to as a 5th. > > Wrong. > A sixth dan would be a third dan in a five level system. > > HK --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Fri, 24 Sep 2004 06:39:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Richards To: Dojang Digest Subject: [The_Dojang] Senior martial arts Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Recently there was a thread on entering the martial arts a little later in life, etc. Tuesday, I had my 51 year old single mother pass her 1st gup exam after 4 years with me (started at 47). She has never refused to try anything on the floor, and keeps a fun jovial attitude. She has also had as many as four other kids pile in her SUV to come to class with her and her daughter. For over a year she brought two of my Project Action scholarship kids to class, and kept them at her home after school when those kids single mothers had to work. She is the kindest, loving person I know, but you wouldn't want to piss her off as I've seen her knife edge through 3 boards and front kick through 2 boards. She is the eldest in our school and 3rd most senior student. It is after all the first hapkido dobok, or as the story goes. Besides, we enjoy the extra padding!:) But please describe the modified hanbok - out of curiosity. Glad to hear you had a good time in Korea. I am looking forward to going back this May. Jere R. Hilland, Fargo, ND Red River Hapkido www.HapkidoSelfDefense.com I am happy to report that the students at Kim Yun Sangs' Hapkiyusool schools are transitioning from the old double-weave Judo uniforms to using modified Han Bok for their Do Boks. For myself I would like to see this trend continue. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Rank Looney Tunes To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 24 Sep 2004 07:08:31 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > But aren't dan ranks above 5th in a 10 dan system usually > administrative anyway? Didn't Funakoshi mention that he would spend perhaps ten years learning just one kata? Maybe he was just a slow learner... :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 5 From: PETER.MCDONALDSMITH@london-fire.gov.uk To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] New starter Date: Fri, 24 Sep 2004 22:15:52 +0100 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I'm not sure cos although I can send e mails I cannot browse. tap DECATHLON SPORTS in google, they will probably have a site. -----Original Message----- From: John Moore [mailto:john@moorecomputersolutions.co.uk] Sent: 21 September 2004 07:58 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] New starter Up in the frozen north Pete - has this place got a web site? I have just finished my third session and been relieved of £25 for annual membership of something I have no idea about yet but am sure as time goes on I will. The Boss ? Had some suits but not to fit me (ahem) so I would like to know where in the UK I can buy suitable suits. Thank you again to all who responded - now time for a bath... That was fast. Was it the Army that said, we do more before 7AM than most people do all day? I guess it is true... :) The article is now available in the list's archives. ftp to martialartsresource.com and go to the_dojang directory. Or go to martialartsresource.com, click over to the Korean side and then click on Korean Arts FTP Site, on the left hand margin. The filename is "notbroken.doc". Thanks again.
