He has asked me to post this. 1. The term "Doshu" as applied to Funakoshi Gichin is incorrect. Doshu does not mean "soke". Doshu is a term from Aikido and means "leader of the way". It is an honorium given to the current and LIVING head of Aikido. For instance, the current Doshu of Aikido is Ueshiba Moriteru. Funakoshi was not the "Soke" of Shotokan Karatedo either. The "style" of Shotokan was created after Funakoshi Sensei's death by his students using his pen name "Shoto" and "Kan". Shotokan means "House of Shoto". Soke BTW is a title passed along family lines but does not indicate the "founder" of a ryuha. 2. Funakoshi Shihan was not a 5th Dan and Shotokan ranks did not originally only go to 5th Dan. Funakoshi Shihan held NO RANK. Ranks were never awarded on Okinawa at the time he was a student there. It was not until much later that the Okinawan Karateka adopted the "dan-I" grading system. Funakoshi Shihan adopted the ranking system used by Kano Jigoro, the founder of Kodokan Judo. He did so for two big reasons. (1) Judo WAS BIG in Japan at the time, and (2) Kano was a friend and tremendous benefactor to Funakoshi. Soo Bahk Do, Tae Kwan Do, Tang Soo Do, etc The World Moo Duk Kwan and the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan federation Inc. are hosting a celebration of the 60th anniversary of Moo Duk Kwan. The site will be in Seoul, Korea October 2005. One can get a preliminary calendar of dates and events at www.soobahkdo.com This is being done as a celebration as well as an opportunity for all practitioners with a history in Moo Duk Kwan to come together. I attended the 50th anniversary celebration held in Seoul in 1995. There were members of all organizations and styles present. Master CS Kim, and Master Pak as well as others. It was a great opportunity to learn, as well as just see Korea if you have not already had the chance. Hope to see you there. JCGet more from the Web. Funakoshi just called his art Karate-Do. I think Karate-Do had ranks, but the Te he learned did not. I seem to recall that the info about Funakoshi's rank came straight from him via his autobio, Karate-Do: My Way of Life. I'll have to skim it again to see if I can locate it. Anyone else recall seeing it there? At the start of the show you'll see some NK TKD students doing a sine wave form. Their uniforms display the ITF patch. Just caught my eye... Is this as comfortable and does it permit freedom of motion as well as a Do bahk?....." I am concerned that you understand my comments and not mix things up. Please allow me to re-phrase my earlier comments to make sure you understand of which I spoke. My earlier comment was regarding having purchased a traditional Han bok--- which is to say traditional Korean everyday dress. I suspect that the gauge of the material may be either 16 or 18 oz cotton--- perhaps a denim. I am very pleased with this dress and find it extraordianrily comfortable. I also suggest that its construction would be sufficient to take the wear&tear of MA training were I of a mind to use it for that. I have long and often advocated that practitioners of traditional Korean MA need to use unifroms that reflect their nations' traditions, rather than continue to borrow the do gi and hakama from Japanese traditions but represent the art being practiced as traditional Korean. If THIS is the item you are interested in I am sure I can find the contact information for the clothing store where I purchased it. Once again you would probably be looking at a bit of money. I estimate about 40k won for the shirt and about another 100k won for the pants and jacket (add on another 50k for the medium weight vest). Putting my "tailor" to one side, the other items I mentioned are the Han bok-inspired Do bok gifted to me by Dojunim Kim. I have not the foggiest where he has these made but it is more than a little comfortable and well-constructed. I have been wondering if he would share the source of his uniforms as a service to the tailor that provides them were enough people interested. They are still polyester but a heavier gauge and I would bet constructing the same uniform out of heavy canvas would not be out of the question completely(????). The last item was the Han bok-inspired Do bok I purchased from Melinda at Chajonshim Martial Art Supply in Columbia, Mo. (877-847-4072). This a light-weight polyester Do bok which is certainly roomy enough for either MThand or weapons work. Does this help clear things up a bit?
