Fun movie to watch, and well, anything with Vanity was fun to watch... :-) Remember that cheezy action flick with John Stamos and Gene Simmons as the bad guy she was in? No way to determine rank (visually) without it. Beginning students sometimes wear tee shirts or sweats to the first few classes just to be sure they aren't wasting their cash on something they'll only wear once. I rather like wearing my "jammies" and find them comfortable and easy to clean. I reckon a Tee shirt would last me about a dozen classes. My Dobaks have faithfully given me hundreds of training hours. I never wear the Dobak top training at home, but always throw on an old pair of pants from a "yellowed" uniform because they are comfortable. But hey, that's just the school I attend. It's been that way since long before I began training and will hopefully be like that long after I am dead. But,if your school eschews uniforms, that's mighty fine. As many have said, it's the training that counts, not the apparel. Arguing about the quality of training based on what one wears is just plain silly. A question for the group. I am recovering from a dislocated shoulder (skateboarding mishap) and wonder if any one here might have some insight on recovery, etc. I'm doing all the required PT, but they look funny at me when I ask about what I can do at TKD classes. I guess I don't look like my hands and feet are lethal weapons.. ;) I've been back to training but taking it very easy. letting the pain guide me, but I figured there were at least a few on this list who've "been there, done that"... Thanks in advance for the advice! And Mr. Sims, you need to take your Valium, or ritalin or whatever it is that keeps you stable. You're losing it. If this were an open Internet newsgroup, you would be classified a Troll. Not sure what to call you here except rude. I will post any results here. FYI, KTA no longer issues dan certs, and further it is only for people in Korea. It is akin to a Korean national residing in Korea to having a dan rank from the USTU. What you wear doesn't make the martial arts. I never spoke about Hapkido or training, we are talking uniforms. Now, I don't know what weapons you use, but if you work with a 6 foot staff, it will get caught with the uniform under the armpit and tricep. If you wear a tight uniform, you restrict movement. I practice and teach Korean and Chinese Martial Arts. I don't have much knowledge about Hapkido nor do I care to. Again, I never spoke of Hapkido. I do have an extensive knowledge in Taekwondo. Look at the ATA, they have their own version of traditional uniforms, but do they teach authentic TKD or their own version. Uniforms were started by the Japanese. Hapkido came from Daito ryu Aiki Jujitsu where Jong Sul Choi learned it(they just added kicks to the Daito Ryu), so if you want to talk tradition, most Korean martial arts are an offshoot from Japanese martial arts. I wouldn't believe 90% of all history that most masters pass on. In my opinion, the training is the most important part. One thing I like about chinese martial arts, is that they practice in a t-shirt, pants and shoes. When you get into a confrontation you will most likely be wearing shirt, pants and shoes. You can practice throwing and grappling techniques with a dobok, but when you get into fight, will your opponent be wearing a Dobok? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Some interesting points were brought up here... some people say ONLY train in traditional garb,, some people don't care... some people say no t-shirts... here's my opinion.... It is good to train in the type of clothing you will probably be attacked in. for instance.. I live in Florida.. we wear doboks,, all sizes shapes and colors. I don't care about that.. but sometimes when we grapple or do joint locls and throwing it is good to wear t shirts.... choking someone out in a t shirt is totally different than choking someone out in a double weave mizuno... throwing someone in a t shirt is totally different than throwing someone in a tkd uniform.... my point is... how will the person be dressed that is attacking you? Will he be wearing a thick winter coat here in central florida??? I think not.. try to be pragmatic in your approach to your training.... you fight as you train. think about what you are training for.. train smart and always think about REALITY..... first and being a dressed up dandy later..
