Before becoming an actor, Mike had earned his black belt in TaeKowndo and Hapkido back in the early 1970s at the original dojang in Flushing of GrandMaster Dr. Jung Hwan Park. Mike was very strong, and more than once sent me airborne with a side kick, sending me to go splat against the wall. This is the same school that the late Grandmaster Mike Wolmershauser used to come to from Massachusetts when first learning hapkido. regards, Bernie --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "michael tomlinson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 01 Oct 2004 12:43:27 +0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] Last Dragon Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Alain has the right mindset with Martial Arts IMHO, he keeps a cool head and plenty of ammo... that's what it's all about,, have fun in your training and PLEASE don't take yourself too seriously.. that is the biggest farce in Martial Arts IMO, too many dressed up pontificating "Masters", that somehow try to portray they know some secret curriculum or knowledge, anywho thanks for asking about the hurricane down here Alain, it was kind of rough but really bad for Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach man some areas got hammered,, Daytona Beach is ate up and so is my neighborhood... 3 hurricanes have hit my house in 6 weeks but it's still standing,,, thank God... I have a friend in Ohio call me and say "I'd like to come down and experience a hurricane once just to see what it's like", I told him to get the full effect he would have to move down here, attain a mortgage on a house, have all your loved ones down here and then worry about your job, gas, ice, electric, health, and animals.... then you will get the proper perspective... but it's cool, sometimes you just have to keep pounding the rock and be happy with all that God has given you..... p.s. Vanity was the junk in the 80's wasn't she!!! Michael Tomlinson _________________________________________________________________ Don’t just search. Find. "yes" :) We have an awesome family owned BBQ place in our strip center whom will be doing the cooking. Our students are bringing the sides... kind of a pot-luck. We are having this BBQ to bring all participants and instructors together without the stress of finding a table at a restaurant that will seat all the mutants together. I hope you and your Texan will be able to make it. Just be patient. As a supplement, you might want to check out Pavel Tsatsouline's book 'Super Joints' (sounds like the title of a Cheech & Chong movie). He has some very good movements specific to the shoulder to not only increase joint mobility, but also strengthen the joint and surrounding musculature. I've been using the movements and concepts for just a short time now, but can already feel some benefit. I plan on making this kind of joint mobility/strengthening work a greater part of my routines. I feel this is extremely important as I get older, and want to remain as physically active as possible. Unfortunately, his materials are kind of expensive. I would suggest picking up a used copy at amazon.com or half.com. Yep, I loved it too. And it is out on DVD now. Quite cheap. LOL. For those who have an aversion to 1980s MTV fashion, you may want to watch it drunk. But it is still a good one for the kids. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net This article was sent to me from another list. This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children, everyone you know. After reading this, forward it to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in. 1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do! 2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! 3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives. 4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE. 5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage: A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars. C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.) 6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot). 7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN! If the same intentions are true with a t-shirt and pants then I respect you. Need there really be more said? Of course I'm going to answer my own question now. lol. None of us are identical to another. So other people always bring something to the table. We don't have to like it, only give it a taste. Just a simple opinion. We have a lot of very passionate people in the DD, and I think sometimes we get caught up in our strong convictions. The question is, are we doing what we think (key word "THINK") is right and open to other ideas? Once again, just a simple opinion. Luke --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Whether ABC martial Arts belongs to a specific group of people or not. I have been taught from the very beginning that every part of martial arts training has a higher purpose. Keeping a uniform builds respect for the history, Discipline and responsibility by caring for it and keeping it clean and ready for the next use.The uniform was the first tool that I experienced that linked my home life to my martial arts training. I had to take responsibility for it outside of class, so that I could still stand as part of the elite group that I had chosen to be a part of. The uniform connected me to my class mates, in a white uniform, we were all the same. the only difference was the belt, which stood for experience and skill, hard work and peserverence. but other than that symbol, we were basically all the same. Symbolically, the dobok specifically introduces the student to the Han philosophy so deepely embeded in the cultural heritage of Korean Martial Arts. Hanbok, is symbolic of Han philosophy and the dobok resembled daily dress. Its a lesson for Korean Martial Artists in the culture of earlier pracititioners who we might like to better understand. Through a better understanding of Korean culture, you might better understand why certain techniques and styles developed with a certain emphasis. My point is that Martial arts training transcends the analysis of fighting techniques and physical conditioning. ultimately, it should be a tool that empowers a person toward education and a better understanding of himself and the world around him. All this talk about unification, and so many ego's struggling to prove who is stronger, better, right or wrong. What a disappointment to think about teaching a student from white belt all the way to black belt, only for him to see that when black belts get together, its usually a contest to see who's ego is bigger, Who has the right to profit from a certain martial arts name or system, Who's version of history is the most correct, Who has the lineage with the straightest and deepest roots. How does all this benefit those people with whom you strive to build up with actual martial arts training? Do you think it serves as a good example to anyone? Does it lead to unity between martial artists? You can see a true "student" by the way he studies, You can see a true "teacher" by the way that he teaches.
